"Anniversary Ale~ A high gravity wheat wine made with blood oranges that render an alluring dark purple hue to the color. Flavor abounds from the spice of green peppercorns and tang from blood orange zest. Aggressive dry hop additions amplify the citrus overtones and spiciness found throughout. ‘Anni’ Ale typifies the full magnitude of Short’s Brewing Company by embodying all the complexities and fulfillment necessary to pay tribute to another year of brewing. 10% ABV 63 IBU's"

12oz bottle poured into Perennial tulip - thanks to erikkoppin

Lightly hazed brilliant orange pour with a thin suggestion of head, dissolving quickly, leaving little lacing or retention.

Literally, I brought the glass to my nose, took a whiff and went, "whoa!" Explosively juicy blood oranges, pithy and pulpy with light sweetness. Boozy glow, spicy peppercorns, wheat and citrus.

An absolute avalanche of blood orange with notes of citrus peel, pulpy juicy and light sweetness. Citric with warming alcohol throughout. The backbone lurks underneath the metric ton of oranges with honey, wheat and sugar. Wait for it...bam! - right at the end, the peppercorns poke through, smacking the palate with a spicy warmth, combining with the booze and oranges to finish it off.

Fuller medium body, lighter carbonation, sticky and full on the tongue. I really enjoyed the hell out of this one - between the oranges, peppercorns and warmth, this was one of the best Short's beers I've tasted in a long time. More, please.

Poured into a snifter on June 2, 2013.

A: Light caramel colored with a very smell white head that seems to quickly diminish, not a whole lot of lacing on the glass, rather average.

S: The smell is a completely different story, I mean wow. I get tangerines, oranges, blood oranges, peach, cherry tomatoes, and some pepper spice as well. An absolute bouquet of fruit- this beer is a feast for the senses. Excellent stuff.

T: First taste is a mix of grapefruit and oranges. Later, I get something like herbal, viney tomatoes which I guess isn't too surprising considering that this beer is rather similar to Short's other brew, Bloody Beer. There are a lot of similarities in taste between the two, but I definitely like this more considering that the tomato isn't super overwhelming like it is in Bloody Beer. Peppercorns are also heavily prevalent and it works very well with the lemon zest that eventually makes an appearance on the back-end, adding something of a bitter (but not overly so) backbone to the brew. It's also a very, very easy drinker. I would almost consider this a session beer for me.

M: Creamy and smooth, but nothing really to write home about. However, the moderate carbonation does add a very pleasant bubbly sensation on the tongue as the session goes on, which is a definite plus. Slightly above average mouthfeel here.

O: This is a great beer from Short's, the taste and smell are awesome and I think it is among the best of Short's line of eccentric brews. Very good, and definitely worth a try for sure.

Thanks alelover!

What a beaut... bright red/orange body with a boozy, large gauge finger of head that recedes to a thin collar that laces perfectly, showing every bit of booze.

Huge blood orange presence - the peppercorn really compliments the citrus and wheat. Clean, sweet... very approachable.

Wow... again, the flavors from the oranges are big and bad. Grapefruit and orange dominate the palate with undertones of cereal wheat and honey. This is absolutely fantastic. My favorite beer from Short's without a doubt. Unique, thirst quenching, vibrant. Is this really ten percent?

bought at Spartan Spirits for a little over 2 bucks a single

Paired with peanuts

Very powerful sweet moscato smell to it. Not much bitterness in the smell, but the alcohol tones are well pronounced. A lively beer with ruby red color. Head is very fizzy and fades very fast, leaving behind no signs of lacing.

The taste is not nearly as intense as I expected. The addition of peppery spice is made present (very much so) in the finish. Citrus hops are present but a bit overpowered by the spicyness. Dry but not bitter in the finish. Very crisp and sharp on the mouth. Alcohol is very well hidden, even as it warms.

I found this beer enjoyable, but would probably not seek it out again.

$2 bottle poured into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint".

Appearance: Pours a sunset sort of orange color with about a finger of a white head, that dies down pretty quickly. Decent bit of carbonation coming from the bottom of the glass. Quite significant alcohol legs.

Smell: Grapefruit, orange, and mango dominate the aroma... very fresh smell. Pleasant and inviting.

Taste: Interesting ... I've never had a Wheatwine, so I didn't know what to expect. This is very distinctive. The peppery note coats the mouth but isn't too pungent, and there's also a citrus flavor with quite a sour quality, which I'd assume is the yeast used in this beer. The aftertaste is heavy on the wheat, with almost a briny flavor as well... Summit hops? A strange mix, but it's manageable. Peppery, sour orange juice brine is the essential flavor here, with a wheaty, minorly burning finish. The feel is surprisingly light, as I was expecting a thicker beer. I'm glad it's not too thick though, as this beer could easily become cloying if that were the case. The aftertaste is probably my favorite part about Anniversary Ale. Love the wheat, orange, pepper flavor.

This just isn't quite my style. It's not bad by any means, though. In fact, I'd consider it to be a VERY GOOD beer just because I never thought "Peppery, sour orange juice brine" would be an appealing flavor. Definitely glad to have tried this, and it's a unique beer, but I'd not have it often.
