I decided to give this a full write up since it is retired.

Mine poured with a very lively head, I had to wait for it to finish the pour. A nice off-white heat, but too much. I don't think it's a 'live' beer, but that's the kind of head it had. Amber color beer.

Strong strawberry smell. To be expected for sure with a name like this, but almost, ok, really it was too much.

The taste was similar, a distinctive strawberry. Not much of the milk flavor comes through and no real suggestion of biscuit or cake to me, which is fine. I had the Key Lime Pie by Short's and you got the full range in that. With the key lime, it didn't really work. The strawberry took some getting used to, but it was a beer with strawberry, albeit too much. Contrast that with a strawberry lambic or a strawberry drink with a hint of beer.

Overall, not great, but it was ok. I was able to finish it. Not my mug of beer, really, but not the drain pour I feared. Kudos to Short's for the spirit of experimentation! (995 characters)

HA! Shorts did it again!!!!

Super easy pour into a tulip receptacle. Off-white soapy head falls quickly. Brew is deep ruby red, pretty cloudy.

Super strawberry aroma, lots of cream on the base too.

Surprisingly not overly sugary. Very smooth and strawberry. Very delicious. Perfect light carbonation, no off-flavors, no bitterness, and not a sugar bomb.

Quite possible the funniest brew i've ever had. Very unique and enjoyable on a hot day. Its definitely a strawberry shortcake. If you like Fruit Brews, this is a MUST try! Thanks Adam for sharing. (555 characters)

Poured into a snifter, the beer was a deeply red tinted golden color with a modest white head. Only a very slight lacing left on the glass, but that it is not what we are here for. The aroma on this beer is amazing. It is like walking through a strawberry patch in June. Notes of carmel and a distinct beer note are also present in the aroma. This is such an easy drinker. The tang of the strawberry comes through in a big way in the initial taste. It tastes as though the strawberries might have been picked a hair too early, but it is still fabulous. The backbone is a smooth creamy sensation that coats the mouth nicely. It puts the cream in the strawberry short cake. Notes of carmel and a mild grassy note are also present. The strawberry tang continues into the aftertaste, but fades quickly. The fact that the beer is thin makes it an easy drinker, but does not allow the taste to linger. Short's did an amazing job of capturing the taste of Strawberry Short Cake in this beer. It is a nice desert beer. (1,010 characters)

12oz bottle into snifter. Thanks jbck109 for this one.

A: Pours a light pink tinged orange with a finger of off-white head that faded into thin collar.
S: Very sweet notes of strawberry syrup and strawberry candy on the nose. Very fruity, sweet and slightly funky.
T: Follows the nose with dominant flavors of strawberries. This drinks like a slightly less sweet and carbonated melted popsicle. I don’t know if I’d call it shortcake, but there are a few other sugary flavors in there as well. Thankfully the sweetness isn’t cloying, and I guess I’d call this refreshing.
M: Medium body, fizzy carbonation, light, sweet and smooth. Thankfully not heavy or syrupy.
O: A strawberry lover’s beer. Glad it wasn’t infected. Drinks pretty well actually. Worth checking out, thanks Jay. (796 characters)

Received as an extra in a trade. Poured into Dogfish Head Chalice.

A - Pours a clear dark reddish amber hue with a light one finger head that fades quickly to leave a light, thin halo.

S - Faint strawberry and shortcake. LOTS of cake (but of old cake) with some slight sweetness.

T - Nice light strawberry and cake, like stale shortcake. Lingering sweetness with some light vanilla. Strawberry is faint but noticeable.

M - Mouthfeel is nice with solid carbonation, albeit a bit on the sweet side.

O - Overall too much overcooked shortcake for my liking. Tone that one back and amp up the strawberry and this ones a winner. (627 characters)

An orangey-red barely translucent brew with a tiny ring of head and minimal sprouts of carbonation.

Strawberry preserves and white english muffin/ sourdough in the nose, just like the name would lead one to believe! Getting some nice ting of dark-fruit skin- grapes and blueberries. Suggests a mild tartness, which is exciting.

Lots of bready malt with a tiny fruity sweetness and a prominent berry taste. There is a wheatiness that seems to un-balance the flavors, but is ok after a few sips, once you know what to expect.

Mouthfeel is sticky and creamy- in small amounts. Overall, a thin-bodied beer that could even be called refreshing. (645 characters)

I hunt this beer down every year, draft and bottles. Its very much worth the searching.

A: Pours a half finger head with light red/pink hues. Actively carbonated, appetizing.

S: Freshly cut strawberries and busciut/malt on the nose. Can even smell a hint of the milk sugar thats added oh so nicely.

T: Very sweet and tart at the same time, the strawberry flavor is perfect! A little over-carbonated I suppose, but it works perfect with this particular beer.. any less carbonation and it would be flat in my opinion.

M: Really a great feel to this one, sugary and sweet. Sticky strawberry mouthfeel with a nice aftertaste of buscuit malty-ness.

O: Excellent. Another home run for shorts. Like a beer anniversary every time I crack one open. (746 characters)

Awesome extra in a recent trade. My first ever short's brew

Pours deep clear red with almost no head. Smell is strawberries with some slight medicinal hints. Tastes much better than it smels strawberry comes through on the first sip that leads into a delicious pound cake like sweet malt taste. Carbonation is on the lower side and mouthfeel is faurly light. Overall I think they got what they were aiming for with the taste on this one, pretty good but not really something I could drink that much of. (503 characters)

Bottle opened on 7.25.12.

A - Pours a dark brown with a hint of ruby. A fizzy light tan head forms and then is gone instantly.

S - Old strawberries.

T - Old, over-ripe strawberries.

D - Lower carbonation and a very light body.

O - Hmmm...close, no not really. I did not enjoy this one at all. (298 characters)

Poured into a 12oz bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint. Thanks to Corbet!

This beer pours out a hazy amber with a large head. The aroma is tart, fruity, and cakey, as expected. Not quite as expected are the rubbery notes in the background. The taste, again, is good, plus a little bit of that burnt rubber. I can get by it for the delicious strawberry flavors let along by a bit of cake flavor and some grainy malts. The mouthfeel is light and crisp, and the drinkability is fine. Overall, it's actually a good beer that achieves what it should. Shame about the whole rubber thing. (583 characters)

Pours copper with a very slight tinge of pink. The head is slightly lacking, but the lacing is nice.

The aroma is slightly fruity, and a ton of biscuit malt comes through. A creaminess manages to reveal itself as well.

The taste is quite true to the goal. I found that Short's Key Lime Pie was far too sweet, but this beer had much more moderation and balance. It has its share of sweetness, yet it doesn't overwhelm at all. The beer actually has a strong resemblance to strawberries, cake, and cream, and the only thing that keeps this from being perfect is how the cream flavor falls off a bit too fast.

The body is creamy and smooth. Carbonation is on par. The finish is dry and mildly sticky.

Overall, this was one of Short's successful attempts at not only replicating a flavor, but making it drinkable. Short's is just about always good for replicating flavors, but making them taste good is normally another story. Luckily this was a success, and a testament to their brewing abilities. (1,001 characters)

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating(this has to be pretty old). Pours cloudy reddish orange color with a nice 2 finger fairly dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of of big strawberry, cream, vanilla, angel food cake, biscuit, strawberry syrup, a some slight herbal. Very nice and authentic aromas going on here, with good strength and balance. Taste of big strawberry, cream, angel food cake, bread, vanilla, light caramel, and light herbal. Quite dry on the finish; with some light lingering notes of strawberry, bread, cake, and cream on the finish for an instant. A minimal amount of fruity tartness as well. Nice balance of flavors, and the crispness of the finish makes it very easy to drink and never get too sweet on the palate. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very crisp and lightly syrupy mouthfeel that seems to work well for this. Alcohol is very well hidden with pretty much no warming noticed on the finish. Overall this is a damn nice experimental beer from Shorts! The flavors are well balanced and work together; with a nice crisp finish that makes this incredibly easy to drink without being cloying. I would definitely have more of this when it is bottled again. (1,313 characters)

Review from notes. Thanks to Jay for opening this one up, one of the beers from Shorts I have wanted to try the most.

A: Pours a slightly hazy amber with a slightly reddish tint to it. Small off-white head forms and lasts for a few moments, spotty lacing.

S: Wow, the aroma reminds me of strawberry filling, and definitely get a little bit of angel food cake and biscuity malt. There is a little vanilla too.

T: Very similar to the aroma, plenty of sugary strawberry with some biscuity malt. Very sweet, certainly reminds me of its namesake.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Easy drinking with a sweet finish.

O: Extremely impressed, spot on with the flavor. Had no problem drinking it, would love to try some of the other off the wall offerings from Shorts. (779 characters)

12oz bottle poured (well, more like launched) into tulip - thanks to erikkoppin for the generous extra

Erupts from the top of the bottle after opening, leaving a decent amount of the beer on my counter and in the sink. Humongous head slowly dissolves, with a pretty nice reddish hues. Looks somewhat like strawberries.

Slightly tart and funky in the nose with hints of fruit. Strawberries and jammy notes with some residual sweetness.

Starts off with a slight touch of fruit, quickly swept away by some tart and funky notes. A mild sourness evolves with strawberries and cream. Sweetness lies underneath with a soft malt backbone. Finishes a little funky.

Medium body, super high carbonation, prickly and bubbly on the tongue. This definitely went off the tracks a bit, although the tart notes were kind of a nice mix with the strawberries. (846 characters)

An extra from surlytheduff in another of our awesome trades-- thanks a bunch!
Served in a tulip.

I popped this open and got momentarily distracted by "Girl Who Played With Fire" playing on my computer in the background... After 30 seconds I looked back to see this foaming over the top of the bottle... Dammit.

The head erupted to 6 fingers... With about 8 ounces left in the bottle.
Dammit dammit dammit.

The head looks fluffy and rocky, like when you fuck up a root beer float by trying to pour the root beer on top ofthe ice cream.

The malt profile reminds me of a sour-mashed Berliner weiss and the fruit reminds me of a Sunkist Starwberry soda. Some tart cherry notes too. The beer is not impressing me very much.

Body is certainly overcarbonated.

Overall-- I love fruit beers, when they are done well. I love sours, even mediocre ones. This beer misses both the marks. (885 characters)

Pours a light brown and orange, ok head and hazy

A very funky tart aroma, slightly medicinal and not very pleasing in my mind. Not a lot of strawberry aroma or Graham cracker smell

Flavor makes up a lot from the aroma, starts off acidic and tarts but quickly moves to a sweet cracker and strawberry flavor. Finishes kind of creamy and dry

Medium body with average carbonation and leaves the palate dry. Tangy aftertaste and a fermented fruit flavor

A highly interesting beer that is very bold in the idea and executed alright. Worth a try but not going to seek it again (573 characters)

Pours a cloudy red/orange with a super frothy mostly white head that takes up almost a third of the pour. Smells exactly like a strawberry short cake. I am even getting hints of frosting. First sip is super sweet with the taste mirroring the nose. How do they do it? At Great Taste in 2011 I had Short’s Carrot Cake and that too was spot on. Again, I ask… How do they do it? Even the mouthfeel is cakelike. I am not a huge fan of sweet beers but this stuff makes one scratch their head and say out loud, “How do they do it? “ (533 characters)

12oz bottle courtesy of RocPorterFanatic. Into a DFH Signature glass.

A: Pours a chunky copper color with some pink notes when held to the light. A ton of chunks floating and moving around in here. Bulbous off white head that will not fade away. This thing was a bit of a gusher, thankfully it didn't explode. Would be nice if there weren't chunks.

S: Lots of strawberries right up front, a slightly bready profile winds up under the massive strawberry notes. A touch of a sweet, whip cream/vanilla type smell is in there as well. This actually smells really nice.

T: Lots of strawberries and a decent amount of grainy malt, almost more of a bread crust type flavor. Really a fruity beer. Slightly tart, but it works well with this beer. Pretty tasty stuff.

M: Medium body with prickly carbonation, finish is sticky and sweet and lingers for quite some time on the tongue.

O: Pretty interesting beer, I'd like to try some of the other odd ball beers like this from Short's, as I think they probably do most of them really well. Interesting, but interesting in a good way. (1,081 characters)

12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass. I received a huge box of Short's goodies from MarcatGSB and this is my first of their truly weird concept beers.

Appearance - Overflowing poured into the pint glass. 50% beer, 50% head. Thick, creamy head with tightly knit bubbles. The body itself is a light amber with a good deal of murkiness. Wisps of strange sediment kept falling into my glass, which has me slightly worried.

Smell - Very odd smell. Yes, I get some faint strawberries, but otherwise it smells like toast and some sort of salted nuts. There's a faint smell of what I guess is the "cream" to this beer. It's off-putting.

Taste - The taste is redeeming. Creamy start with a fairly hoppy middle flavor. The flavor goes through so many iterations so quickly it's hard to pin down what each one tastes like. It's not sweet, although it seems like it wants to be. The finish is tart strawberries and a bit of bitterness. Interesting, for sure.

Mouthfeel - Highly carbonated and tingly. Strange flavors do put off the drinkability, though. I don't know that I'd want to drink this again, especially in more than one sitting.

Overall - Glad I got to try this. It's so bizarre that I'm quite tempted to see what these other beers are like. It seems I have the whole lineup of odd Short's beers. This is only the beginning. (1,329 characters)

12oz with no date poured into Deschutes snifter. Thanks to stickman1220 for this hook up.

A: Pours a really pretty pink amber color. Tons of head! 3 fingers of off white creamy head. Really tight bubbles. Lots of carbonation off bottom of glass. Sticky head.

S: I'll be honest, it smells mildly of strawberries and cream. Definitely helped by that milk sugar. Strange sweet malty nose.

T: Actually pretty easy drinking golden ale. The strawberries are there but not a ton. A little hop bite on the tip of the tongue. Nice crisp finish. Some sweetness on the tongue. No alcohol. I got a weird aftertaste that almost upset my stomach. Not pleasant.

M: Light bodied with some mouth coating.

O: I gotta B- on this one. It's definitely an interesting tasting beer and one that you should try just to TRY. I don't think you'll be drinking multiples of this one in a sitting though. (880 characters)

Thanks Scott for yet another Short's beer! Poured into my Kuhnhenn snifter, compliments of Scott as well!

A- The beer pours a murky amber/orange color. VERY carbonated, possibly too much carbonation.

S- Slightly funky and tart with that underlying scent of Short's typical beer.

T- Too mcuh carbonation. Once that subsides I get a tart strawberry flavor that is quite nice.

M- Less carbonation would have been better.

O- I have had a couple of these and find them to be fairly refreshing. (493 characters)

S ~ biscuit-like blended w/ strawberry...sweetness and sugary...

T ~ Follow the nose please, but just a little lighter..

M ~ somewhat of a smoother beer.. light body... but easy to drink...

O ~ not bad.. for some reason, thought I remember the flavor being stronger when I had it a few years back at the GABF...but who knows, that was a while ago..and itmay have beenfresher...Either way, decent beer.. (496 characters)

Thanks to Exiled for sending me this one!

Pours a hazy light reddish-brown with a huge 3 inch bubbly white head that fades to a film on the top of the beer. Random steaks of lace form on the glass on the drink down. Smell is strawberry jam/jelly, biscuit, and strawberry candy. Taste is of the strawberry jam/jelly and artificially flavored strawberry candy. A bit of a sourness comes through as well. This beer is way too carbonated to the point where it almost hurts to drink. Much more carbonation than a soda. Overall, this is a pretty average beer with a better smell than taste. I have a feeling there is some infection issue at hand with the sourness and the excessive carbonation. None the less it's another interesting offering from Short's that I could imagine would be pretty good if things were under control. (822 characters)

First beer from Short's. Received as an extra. I always want to like my extras. I guess you can't like them all. Drank this straight from the bottle, but I graded the appearance as good, because I think all beer LOOKS good. The smell from the nose of the bottles was like...rancid strawberries. The taste excludes ANY kind of strawberry whatsoever. This is where the "short cake" comes into play what...a mess. I don't know how else to describe it. It's simply disgusting to me. I've taken 5 more sips than I've wanted simply trying to pin down what the fuck the taste is, but I give up. I'm not going to swallow one more sip in an effort to find out. Overall this was a complete miss. I have a couple other assorted Short's bottles to rip through. Hopefully there's some kind of improvement over this godawful disaster. (820 characters)

12oz bottle that has been a big want, courtesy of jpmclaug as a great extra in a recent trade. Poured into a Bruery tulip.

A - Pours a bright medium amber color that is clear, but has well defined floating particles throughout. Three fingers of rocky off-white foam sits on top and shows decent staying power...lasts for a couple of minutes slowly fading to the surface - very sparse lacing left on the glass.

S - A strong fruitiness that definitely has a big strawberry component to it but seems like it is complemented by some other fruit I can't quite place. A solid malt base that is sugary sweet and a bit biscuity. I'm also getting some whipped creamy aromas too.

T - Hmm, I'm gonna guess this is the same base beer used in Key Lime Pie also. Has the same crusty, almost graham crakery flavor at the base. The strawberry comes thru nicely on top of it...Strawberry is difficult to get to come thru in beer, but Shorts does a good job making it fairly forward in the flavor profile. I also get a bit of toasted marshmallow/merangue type flavor too.

M - Perhaps a bit over-carbonated...quite fizzy on the tongue. The carbonation gives a bit of a false sense of body here and makes it feel almost medium in heft. Works here pretty well...might also amplify the fruit thru the effervescence getting the strawberry flavors out and open to the senses.

O - Another good fruit beer from Shorts. I remember this one from EBF a couple years back and have been wanting more ever since. Doesn't disappoint at all. Not sure I could make this an everyday beer, but I could see myself coming back to this as part of a semi-regular rotation. (1,636 characters)
