Dry Hopped Double Brown Ale
Good Humans was originally created to showcase one of Briess Malting Company’s new malt varieties. Originally planned as a one-off beer, it quickly became a favorite brew. Good Humans is a Double Brown Ale made with Carabrown Malt and dry hopped with Simcoe and Golding hops. The brew has sweet malty esters that are met by huge toasted caramel and toffee flavors. The finish is dry with a bouquet of hops.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy chestnut color with a well=formed head; very good retention and shards of lace are left behind
Smell: Brown sugar and caramel dominate the nose; the alcohol is readily discernable as are the hops
Taste: The sweet caramel and brown sugar flavors dominate at the outset but are joined by a bitterness that verges on sour; I cannot tell if this is what the brewer intended or whether it is another example of Short's quality control problems
Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with prickly carbonation and considerable warmth in the gullet
Overall: I was hoping for much more from this brew and don't think the sourness was intended
Thanks, FlandersNed, for the opportunity

Poured the color of iced tea that hasn't been brewed quite long enough, curiously light tone for an imperial brown ale. The head was beige and left regular lacing.
The aroma was rather mild for me (chemically damaged nose) but I did get some dark bread and almost citrus like fruits.
The taste, well, is more IPA than brown ale; I get the citrus most but bready, almost chocolate like malts fill in around in a very interesting manner. The taste is difficult to describe, it's certainly not what I'd call a brown ale in flavor, but it's darn tasty.
The feel is lively, tiny carbonation that goes well with the odd melding of flavors going on.
OA, this is a very tasty beer, but probably not one for people who like traditional brown ales. But if you want to try something different, give it a go.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours an opaque dark brown with tan head. Retention is strong. The nose is really nice - very nutty up front. Hazelnuts and almonds. A bit of toffee and milk. Slight citrus note, along with a dark bread. However, I keep coming back to the nutty notes. Really interesting!
The taste departs quite a bit from the nose. Chocolate, toffee, rye bread, blood orange, roasted malts, slight pepper, grass, and a bit of leather. Very nice and balanced. Nothing screaming louder than another.
Mouthfeel is fairly creamy. Aftertaste is mild and roasty. Overall, this is a great brown ale.

No bottled or brewed date anywhere on the six pack at all, seeing the date of the last prior review almost a year ago makes me a little uneasy. Overall an interesting brew for this style, beautiful as root beer with a fluffy head that rings around the entire inside of the glass even after the beer has been consumed. not as bland as a typical brown ale, malty with a nice little hop kick, smooth mouthfeel, just a bit of an alcohol tingle in the aftertaste. It’s a pretty decent beer.

The label should have told me. A brown ale sounds too good not to try, though. Then you put hops in it and goes from good to bitter. If you are into IPAs (I'm not) and wanted to go crazy and try a brown (why?) then this might be your segue to the dark side. I'd say you keep your IPAs to yourself, and I'll keep my browns, and never the two shall meet again. sorry.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) bottle into a Captain Lawrence muffin top pint glass; bottled 09/29/19.
A: Pours a hazy, dark copper to brown color with a one finger, wheat color head, excellent (half finger) retention and broad foamy lacing.
S: Very strong yeast presence aroma, at first, with rye bread, caramel, and toffee; increasingly citrusy and roasty with orange, lime, and chocolate all emerging as it warms. Roastiness wins at the end.
T: Semidry. Flavors cleave more to chocolate, caramel/molasses, toffee, pumpernickel, but with a definite citrusy core. Solid, but not overpowering bitterness.
M: Medium bodied with solid carbonation. A bit chewy.
O: Got this as part of a 2019 Super Hoppy Holiday 12-pack. Good Humans is really a solid and enjoyable ABA, a style from which I am never sure what I should expect. I can see why they converted it from a one off. Enjoyed it and wouldn't hesitate the have or serve.

Bottled 12/19/16; drank 2/5/17 @ the Yarchives.
Semi-opaque brown/orange appearance.
A rough pour yielded a nice tan head; strong lace.
Brown sugar, baking soda & caramel notes in the nose.
Medium mouthfeel.
Caramel & brown sugar flavors up front; baking soda & booze heat notes on the finish.
Decent flavors lurk underneath the baking soda notes; cant say it was terrible, but can't say it was good either.

Bottled 11/09/17. CBF Tulip pint.
A: pours a murky brown with 1/4 finger sandy head that fades quickly to a ring of bubbles, no visible carbonation. Spotty lacing.
S: citrusy hop combines with chocolate malty sweetness. Really chocolatey and sweet smelling with this moderate hop edge. As it warms it smells more barleywine-esque.
T: hops are right there at the beginning, but they are quickly overpowered by a thick, chocolate maltiness. Sweet, but not nearly as sweet as the nose would suggest. Midway through floral and grassy hops present that linger lightly on the finish. As far as balance, this one is decidedly in the malt camp, but gives enough hop action to keep it interesting. I wonder how it was a month or two ago? Alcohol presence is nowhere to be found.
M: lighter end of full bodied, low carb, but surprisingly clean.
O: I like this a lot. Less hoppy than a strong ale or barleywine, with much greater drinkability. This is a truly unique beer, and if you are a fan of malty beers must give it a try. If it were sold in four packs, I could see myself picking up a four every other year.
