Pours like dark root beer with an off-white, bubbly 1/4 inch head that dissipates into slight lacing.
An aroma of dark fruits hits hard at the front. Faint smells of piney, citrusy hops. Anise. Musty and yeasty.
Earthy, smoky malt flavor emerges first, with hints of cookie dough. Brown sugar is in there. This is all balanced with the second half of the sip; a drying, musty hop flavor paired with yeasty fermentation derivatives. Goes down with a bubbly, pointed carbonation.
Mouthfeel is rich and slick. A sweet beginning washed away with the drying hops. Residual warming alcohol and molasses linger.
This is a dry hopped double brown ale, which to me means "a lot of different things in one bottle." It's complex and enjoyable, but it's hard to get a grip on everything going on in each sip; maybe that's a good thing…. Well done, Short's.
