Pours a big, frothy head. Smell is super hoppy, almost as floral as their other IPA's. Color is stark black. First sip immediately reminds me of my other favorite combination of chocolate and peanut butter. This beer combines my absolute favorites of darker, more malty beers, like black ales, and hoppier, lighter beers like IPA's. The flavor attributes of both blend so well together that this may end up being one of my favorite beers overall.

Pours a deep, deep brown, black in the middle. Thick, light-tan head, good staying power. Heavy pines and dank oils/resin on the nose - this one's gonna be good! Taste follows through with a nice dose of pine needles and oily hop resin. Slightly dank; bitter, but not as bitter as you'd expect from the heavy nose of hops. Malts follow through and become noticeable in the aftertaste. Toasty and caramely, they play nicely with the hops and provide an excellent balance to the brew. Slight watery in the taste after a few sips, might be due to the low ABV. Medium body, very, very slight stickiness, leaves the mouth a bit wet and watery. Nice helping of carbonation.

Solid brew! And only 5% ABV? Awesome! This one could be enjoyed all day. Nice helping of hops, resins, oils - enough to satisfy any hophead. Beautiful black color and the unique addition of slight caramel and roast flavors from the malts make this a very enjoyable beer.

A - Pours deep brown with one finger of tan head. Head dissipates pretty quickly, but leaves good lacing behind.

S - Quite piney initially, with roasted and some faint chocolate malts coming through. There is a little bit of sweetness in the chocolate aroma. A bit of funk as well.

T - Starts out with big pine hops, but the roasted and chocolate malts begin to take over halfway through. Finishes with more bitter hops and dry, bittersweet chocolate. Aftertaste is quite floral.

M - Medium mouthfeel. Very resinous. Finishes pretty clean and dry with lingering bitterness.

O - Not my favorite style, but this is one of the better black ales I've had.

Jet black in color and no light is going to get through. A minimal wisp of beige foam. The hops are dominant in the aroma but there's almost a bit of a sweetness as opposed to bitterness. The taste is pretty sweet from the dark malt at the front of the palate and then followed quickly with an intense bitterness from the hops. That has some true staying power. The mouthfeel is pretty smooth with the bitterness really prickling your tongue.

Many thanks to GordianKnot for the chance to try this one. Poured from bottle into DFH snifter. Pours a pitch black creamy pour, nice off white fluffy head with great retention. Smell- nice citrus hops, roasted malt. Taste- awesome hops presence here- it creates prickly bitterness, followed by nice citrus and tropical hops, followed by that mocha, roasty finish. This one is a winner. Mouthfeel is really nice and creamy- full bodied for sure, esp more evident as it warms.

I would seek out again for sure, and thanks again for the chance to taste!

12oz. bottle served cool into a pint glass.

Bludgeon Yer Eye PA is a very dark brown color with redish highlights and good clarity. The head is thick and sticky leaving nice lace behind.

Aroma is both hoppy and roasty in almost equal measure. It's like coffee with a squeeze of orange.

Flavor is pretty intense with a big roasty malt backbone and lots of citrusy hops. Just like the style should be with a nice blend of stout and IPA.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and nicely carbonated. Very bitter but with enough sweetness to give some balance.

Overall a really nice example of the style.

Very dark beer that smells like coffee and nature. Once you take a sip you will get an overwhelming taste of coffee. It is a very thick beer and it will leave a very strong after taste in your mouth. Not my favorite beer at all. I really don't enjoy it

Bludgeon Yer Eye is a dark, chocolate brown color. It’s not opaque. Backlighting reveals some burgundy highlights throughout. It’s topped with a nice tan head that stands over a finger tall. It’s somewhat slow to recede and leaves a sticky web of lace trailing down the glass.

The nose is good. It starts out with a rush of piney and citric hops. Grapefruit and mango are noted. They smell mostly of pine though. There are some dark malt scents. It smells like a mix of roasted malts and cocoa. They’re secondary to the hops. No doubt about that. More chocolaty scents emerge late. They don’t exactly smell sweet. Alcohol is masked well. Doesn’t come through strong at all.

The flavor is excellent. Hops attack the palate immediately and have a strong piney, resiny flavor. There are some citric grapefruit and mango flavors, but pine rules the day. It is quite bitter and dry. The hops work very well with the dark malt base. Roasted malts are the base, but are complemented by cocoa and bittersweet dark chocolate. It all works together to produce a really nice flavor. Alcohol is barley noticeable. Finishes bitter, dry and very roasty.

Bludgeon Yer Eye has a medium body and light carbonation. It is nice, smooth, and easy to drink. I wouldn’t say it’s creamy, but it goes down extremely easy. Several bottles would definitely be possible.

To date, I’ve been really impressed with Short’s Brewing Company. Bludgeon Yer Eye isn’t exactly one of their trailblazing beers, but it’s definitely a high quality American Black Ale (or whatever you want to call it). I think the aggressive hops are the most impressive aspect. They’re full of flavor, but somehow complement the dark malts rather than overshadow them. Works really well. If you haven’t had the opportunity to try this one, it’s definitely worth seeking out.

Very strong coffee aroma and taste. Strong bitterness leaves unpleasant after taste. Not very enjoyable for someone that prefers lighter beers. Hard to drink more than a taste. Also has a burnt after taste with a maltiness that is unrounded. Not a fan, an acquired taste for sure

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip. Thanks to MarcatGSB for this bottle.

Appearance - The bottle opens with hardly a hiss and pours a deep brown body that looks black in the glass with a small off-white head. The head is gone in a flash and there's no lacing at all. It doesn't look all that alive.

Smell - A hop aroma of pine and a ton of grass. Roasted malts behind are an afterthought to the hops.

Taste - Grassy and earthy hops up front. Strong grassy flavors that aren't very appetizing, but drinkable. It's followed by a malt bill that backs it up surprisingly well. It's a smooth transition to chocolate malt and a slightly bitter finish.

Mouthfeel - Low carbonation on this one. Medium bodied and it's pretty drinkable. If the grassy hops had made it bitter, it would be tough to put away, but it's more in the front of the flavor.

Overall - Not bad, but not great. Black ales are tough. They're so difficult to balance. This one had unbalanced flavors that managed to work well together. Surprising, but still not a favorite.
