first of all this beer is not retired!! they have this every year since its creation.(2010)

bottled 4-9-13
poured 4-17-13
this is one of my top 10 from short's if not top 5. the smell of this beer is amazing. nothing quite like it. the taste is fruity from what i can only asume is guava. not your traditional IPA for sure. I can only say good things about this brew and company. if there is a bad reveiw of this beer they either 1. got an infected bottle(which doesnt happen much anymore)2. they dont like the taste of guava 3. or they got a really old bottle that wasnt refridgerated.

but as for me i think this beer is just outstanding.

also thanks half acre, dont know much about you guys but hopefully that will change

Pours a color best described as light-amber and deep-gold; highly translucent with a good amount of clarity to it, especially once the chill haze subsides. A creamy white head forms and dissipates pretty quickly leaving some moderate lacing behind. Had this one a little over a year ago and loved it. Pretty excited to have it again, super-fresh.

The aroma is a beautiful collaboration of "tropical" and "hoppy". Intense guava aromas are the most notable simply due to the fact that you don't often find guava in beers. Juicy, ripe, and insanely sweet guava, also giving off some mango-esque notes, too. The hops are full force as well, sitting perched withing the web of fruity goodness; weedy and grassy with some lightly resinous pine. Mild bready malt is apparent in the finale, yet still plays a tertiary role.

I take a sip and I'm in heaven for a moment. This seemingly flawless execution of a guava-nectar injected India Pale Ale is even better now than I remember. The guava jumps out immediately, sending a rush of sweet, tropical fruits all across your palate. Gushing with juiciness and packed with flavor, the guava meshes perfectly with the hops; the grassy, perfume-like, and light pine characteristics happen to pair excellently.

A little bit of a bitterness spike happens halfway through, as if to remind you that you're drinking an IPA and not a cup of guava juice. Malts are a little heavier on the back end, bringing a nice bread and butter flavor to the table. Medium bodied with an ample amount of carbonation, giving a crispy mouth feel. The finish has a nice guava character with a stingy, yet balanced piney hop bitterness.

One of my favorites from Shorts. I don't know if the guava addition could have been executed any better. Definitely a treat to drink anytime of the day. I wish they made this stuff year round.

Reviewed from notes made on 12/16/10.

The Freedom of two years after the freedom pours orange with a tint of pink into a large snifter. The brew is completely see-through and that adds a nifty flair to the overall appearance. A tiny, tiny pure white head burns off immediately and leaves a speiderweb of film atop the body. The lacing is elegant and coats the glass in spindly clumps and lines of small dots. The carbonation bubbles are miniscule and journey at a medium jaunt through the beer.

The smell is what results when guava and hops get it on. It is a seriously wicked scent, ripe with off-the-chart tropical fruit and sweet citrus aromas. The bitterness of the hops hides way behind the sweet fruit smells. There is a bit of crusty bread in the scent profile and the guava calls to mind delicious girly lotion.

Mmmm, hop bitterness is certainly not buried by the sweet fruits in the taste. In fact, bitter grapefruit hops really shine through all of the other flavors, with the guava addition lingering behind the bitter hop taste. Caramel malts give just enough of a boost to hold up the middle of the sip, but an all-out assault of grassy and grapefruit hop bitterness slams my palate at the finish.

Never more than light to medium-bodied, the mouthfeel is all about how the bitter hops attack my palate and suck all moisture from my mouth. Scratch that. There is a decent amount of creaminess in the middle of a pull, but then sucking nothingness at the end. The carbonation is effervescent and complements the bitterness well.

This is a seriously interesting IPA and ranks high up there for me in the hierarchy of Short's PA/IPA line. The guava makes the aroma really unique, while the hops really carry the flavor. I hope they release this yearly, as I really enjoy it. It is so bitter that it would be difficult to session, but one per sitting would be very satisfying.

A_Pours amber/gold in body with a frothy bone white head. Splotches of lacing cling to the glass.

S_Pungent hops, grapefruit and the guava is pretty noticeable.

T_Same as nose. Good combination of bitter and sweet. The guava is fairly easy to pick up and pairs well with pine and citrus flavors of the hops. Overall pretty damn hoppy.

M_Mouthfeel is a little thin, slick and sticky on the lips.

D_Very enjoyable. I've been finishing these fairly quickly.

Notes from 1/29/11

A - Pours an organish-brown with two fingers of pillowy head.

S - Guava and other tropical fruits are predominant. Aroma is also quite floral with a bit of citrus. Smells very good.

T - Citrus hops, mostly grapefruit, are right up front, followed by guava. Also get some pine hops in the mix. Quite tart throughout, but the flavors meld together really well.

M - Mouthfeel is light/medium and a bit oily. Finish is pretty dry with a nice bitterness.

O - Very nice flavor profile. One of the better IPAs from short's.

Thanks to RBlaszak for sending this bottle my way.

The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is very fruity. I get a lot of guava as well as some papaya and apricot. The aroma is very interesting overall.

The flavor is fruity, but what really stands out is how dry the beer is. The fruit is guava and some other tropical fruit such as papaya and mango. Low bitterness. The flavor is also a little bit tangy. Once again, very interesting.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A unique take on an IPA. Bravo.

Pours a golden, almost light amber, with a white sticky head that laces down the glass. There is just a hint of haze peering through it. The smell is wonderful..tropical guava, pineapple, grapefruit and floral hops dominate. Taste is hop forward with grapefruit first untill the guava sweetens midway followed by pine. The malt bill is present but in the background nicely. Mouthfeel is fine with a dry finish. Very refreshing and drinkable.

I was totally unaware that Short's bottled a version of this as well - Thanks to Erik for sending me one of these! Poured into pint glass, color is a slightly hazy apricot golden with a one finger white head that leaves a good amount of lacing. Smell is a lot different from the Half Acre version - much spicier, lots of fruity hops, bread dough, and a slight malt sweetness in the background. Taste is similar, but much fruitier. Guava stands out in a big way, tropical fruit hops, bread crust maltiness, bitter aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a medium/light carbonation, slightly coating and semi dry. Overall a great beer. I prefer the half acre version to this, but it is always fun to taste the regional differences in ingredients. Hopefully each brewery will brew this again next time Ween is in town.

Slightly orange fruity coloured with loads of white foam that later leaves a lace trail. Very floral citrus hops, and remarkably the fresh guava. Still, smells like an IPA. Very smooth mouthfeel, the guava flavour is pronounced and dominates though it does not overpower, and is blended with hop oils. Hop bitterness blast in the sediment. Very drinkable and a good one.Bottle from Steve. This was cellared somewhat and would not be as appreciated by pure hopheads. Certainly reminds me of CC Guava Grove.

A- Golden color, semi transparent, about a finger of head when poured, a little lacing
S- Piney/citrusy, it actually reminded me a lot of spruce pilsener
T- A nice piney bitter IPA
M- Medium body and good mouthfeel
D- I only bought a single, but I wish I had at least another one.

A great IPA. Lets hope they bottle this more than once.

April 2012 notes- Really glad they brewed this again. I'm loving the pineapple, pine nose and citrus taste. Shorts puts out a lot of different offerings but every now and then, they hit it out of the park. Changed overall to a 4.0.

12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Thanks go to Stakem for splitting this one with me!

Pours a clear copper, with a thin covering of bright-white foamy head. This maintains a nice robust look, leaving back a rich foamy cascade that hangs in thick swathes down the sides of the glass. The guava is fairly forward here in the nose, with what I can only describe as a grassy or herbal juiciness in the nose. More floral and peppery tones give this some airiness in the nose, whiles sugary malts provide some tangy supportive sweetness in the nostrils.

The taste is bitter with green pith, spice, and herbal tones, which is then backed by the earthy juiciness of the guava and sweeter notes of bread and caramel from the malts. Raw bitternessand earthy fruit really sticks to the tongue and lingers for a good bit in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a firm crispness that is carried along by a good bit of underlying oily slickness that keeps this staying smooth in the mouth.

While I didn't get to enjoy this as fresh as I did the Half Acre version last summer, I could still definitely tell that, unlike that version, this Short's take seemed to favor more of the hop character over the guava addition, which was more of a supporting force here. I liked that this brought a little something different to the table than the Half Acre version did. Solid.
