A - body is a very nice orange color, hard to see through, with a sizable frothy white head.

S - You can smell the guava from feet away. That's complimented nicely by citrus and piney hops.

T - strong hops up front, mostly grapefruit, and then a touch of guava sweetness on the back. bitterness lingers in the aftertaste. Really well balanced, nothing too fancy.

M - a good body, not hugely robust, but not thin, somewhere in the middle. It's hard to keep this in my mouth long enough to figure it out. I wouldn't call it creamy, but its good.

D - I think this is crazy drinkable. It tastes great, and isn't too big or anything.

Pours a slightly cloudy golden pee color not to different from a macro american pilsner with a small to non existant head and a good lacing all the way down...
It smells of the guava and mellon like sugars, delicious to me, with a tinge of really sweet floral hop...
god, it doesn't taste like anything I have ever had, the guava really comes through in the beginning with a really rich sweetness then as you swallow the hop comes through and dries out the palate and leaves a really nice and dry floral IPA taste in your mouth, all and all the beer is very well balanced and interesting to drink, an adventure in every sip...
It has a light carbonation that isn't abrasive and is crisp which really adds to the flavor and over all drink of the beer but the consistency is like tonic so a little thin for me...
It drinks well and is a very intriguing one of my more preferred fruit beers thus far.

Pours a golden, almost light amber, with a white sticky head that laces down the glass. There is just a hint of haze peering through it. The smell is wonderful..tropical guava, pineapple, grapefruit and floral hops dominate. Taste is hop forward with grapefruit first untill the guava sweetens midway followed by pine. The malt bill is present but in the background nicely. Mouthfeel is fine with a dry finish. Very refreshing and drinkable.

A big ole thanks to Kevin (kzoobrew) for this great beer I have heard about via Half Acre but now get the Short's version! Woot woot! Cheers friend!

Appearance - Pours a golden hay color into my SA Perfect Pint with about two fingers of head that dissipates at a moderate pace leaving some nice looking, full lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell - Wow, what a great odd mixture of not so much bitter grapefruit (I'm so used to bitter grapefruit citrus aromas), orange, and hops all up front. But I'll be damned if the main aroma is just NICE ripe grapefruit. A refreshing and new aroma to me to be honest. Slight malty backbone.

Taste - DAMN close to the aroma. A wonderful, RIPE grapefruit flavor up front with just a hint of orange rind (still oddly sweet rather than bitter in that respect) which then flows to a bitter hoppy and hint of pine. Slight malt, but honestly the citrus shines here. Holy (excuse my language) shit. This beer completely surprised me.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, decent carbonation, finishes a hint dry.

Drinkability - IU could drink this all night long. This is an absolute pleasant surprise. A freaking fantastic brew from Short's that I would buy six packs of all day long. Damn good.

I picked up a single of this at the store the other day since I haven't seen this beer around before and it's ratings were pretty good, so I decided to give this brew a try. The idea of a fruit infused IPA intrigues me. Poured from a 12oz brown bottle into a ping glass.

A- I like the label art on this beer, looks nicer and different then the other shorts labels. This beer poured a nice golden orange color with two and a half fingers worth of fluffy white head that died down to a thing ring that left some lacing.

S- The aroma of this beer is utterly dominated by tons of citrus hops. I pick up tons of grapefruit along with some guava, as advertised.

T- The taste is that of a fruit basket that is filled with half citrus fruits and half tropical fruits, topped with a whole bunch of hop cones. The guava sticks out nicely in this brew along with some grapefruit and mango. There is a nice light malt back bone that helps tie everything together. There was a nice bitter bite at the end that went great with the all the fruit flavors in this beer.

M- Medium bodied with good carbonation and a crisp finish.

D- The alcohol is hidden very well in the brew, along with all the nice flavors and great balance. If I had two more I would drink both of them.

Overall I thought this was one awesome and different IPA. I really never thought about a fruit infused IPA, but after drinking this one I think it's an avenue more brewery's should explore. This was my first collaboration beer and it's an idea that I think is pretty cool. Great job shorts, you guys steady blow my mind.

Served in Stone IPA glass- thanks kzoobrew for the chance to try the other version.

Appearance- Slightly cloudy copper, 3 fingers of off-white head. Great lacing.

Aroma- Wow the guava just pops with a lovely sweetness. The hops are there too but that fruit is front and center.

Taste- Fruit juice with a slightly bitter finish. The guava really is the centerpiece here (as it should be), and you can almost feel the rind in your mouth. There is some taste here that is reminding me of something I drank as a kid, can't put my finger on it though.

Mouth- Nice. Good carbonation not too thick or thin.

Drink- I mean seriously you can put this down like fruit juice. I feel like they hit exactly what they wanted to here and I am not complaining. I can't find my notes on the Half Acre version but I am certain that I like this one better.

A- An ever so slightly hazy bright orange liquid with a creamy white head that has some pretty good retention.

S- Guava, honey, pine, citrus, and mint. Very aromatic. Stunning.

T- Guava, pine, mint, and some citrus. There is enough sweetness to keep the bitterness from becoming overbearing. Unique and very tasty.

M- The body has some bite to it, both from the bitterness and carbonation. The finish is a tad oily and mostly dry.

D- A delicious take on an IPA. Very enjoyable.

Bottle poured into a pint glass. This is a golden copper color with a decent half inch of head. Smell is a nice mix of citrus-hops and guava, making for an interesting balance. Taste is crisp mix of hops and guava, well balanced between the bitterness of the hops and sweetness of the guava. This is like a tropical take on an IPA, something you can imagine sipping outside in the summer. Excellent drinkability.

Honey pour, almost no head, great lacing. Smells of grapefruit, guava, citrus, and pomegranite. Tastes of guava, pineapple, grapefruit, and lime. Very well balanced, an incredible IPA, its somewhat similar to hopslam really, though a little fruitier, and slightly less balanced. Would drink again.

Golden copper pour with barely any head. This is one of the best smelling ipa I have ever had.. Pineapple, mango, minty freshness, guava, honey... Very sweet tropical fruit aroma.
The flavor is a bit bitter as I take the initial sip, then immediately encounter that delightful tropical fruity hop profile. Finishes with a sweet bready flavor. This is delicious.
Medium in body with lower carbonation.
This is one of the best shorts beers I've encountered so far. A lot like half acre's heyoka.. Hmm I wonder...

Big thanks to michibrew for hooking me up with this one. 12 oz bottle poured into tulip. Bottled 3/30/12.

A - Pours a golden color with a bright white one finger head. Slightly hazy but translucent for the most part. Good lacing.

S - Tangy aroma loaded with citrus and tropical fruit. Some citrus hops and herbs.

T - The flavor begins a little bit tart with some huge citrus rind flavors. Big citrus hops give a dank orange rind flavor. Great bitterness on the finish and the guava is really noticeable in the aftertaste. Fantastic flavor.

M - Tingly carbonation and a light-medium crisp feel.

O - This was probably one of the best single IPA's I've ever had. The guava and other tropical fruits combine perfectly with the citrus hops to create a unique, complex, and delicious flavor. I wish this one could be found in my area.

Thanks go out to Andygirl for this bottle, bottled April 9th, 2013.

A- A clear light golden colour, 2" head of foam that shrinks slowly leaving some nice lacing behind.

S- Exotic tropical fruits of all kinds in the smell. Also, a wet hop like bitterness shines through, pine, grapefruit.

T- Guava in the name and, by heck, guava in the taste, big time. Nice sweet notes from that fruit that balances the hoppy, pine bitterness very darn well. After a few sips in, it's so easy to drink and i have to watch myself so I won't finish it too quickly. Pleasant long lasting aftertaste. Me likes!

M- Lowish level of carbonation and fairly light bodied, nice, very nice mouthfeel.

O- A very tasty and satisfying drinking experience here. My first Short's brew and a winner in my book. Yeah, I quite fancy the way Guava was executed here.

A_Pours amber/gold in body with a frothy bone white head. Splotches of lacing cling to the glass.

S_Pungent hops, grapefruit and the guava is pretty noticeable.

T_Same as nose. Good combination of bitter and sweet. The guava is fairly easy to pick up and pairs well with pine and citrus flavors of the hops. Overall pretty damn hoppy.

M_Mouthfeel is a little thin, slick and sticky on the lips.

D_Very enjoyable. I've been finishing these fairly quickly.

poured into my duvel tulip

appearance - golden orange with mild to moderate visible carbonation, a head of about a finger and a half

smell - strong citrus fruit up front with a slight hoppy aroma at the end

taste - starts off with a nice sweet fruity flavor similar to kiwi(ill assume this is the guava because i havnt had guava nectar without vodka in it) then it moves into a mixture of bitter hops and sweet citrus fruit, finishes with citrus kick and a nice bitter hop flavor that lingers

mouthfeel - thin, not as water but far thinner than i had anticipated, carbonation lightens this up a bit, very drinkable but i would have liked mine a bit thicker

drinkability - very easy to drink, nice sweet citrus, the bitter hoppy finish leaves you wanting more, would be very nice on a hot summer day, if this was released as a year round or summer offering it may replace soft parade as my go to shorts summer beer

over all this is a pretty decent brew, better than shorts year round offerings, as stated if re released i would buy it again

Big thanks to beerindex for the Box 'o Short's! No dating noted on the bottle.

A - Pours a slightly hazy vibrant orange with a large fluffy white head. Carbonation is visible and bubbling the whole time.

S - Wow, this smells great! My experience with guava's is zero-to-none, so I never would have guessed that's what it was, but the smell is very distinguishable from your typical IPA. Healthy dose of citrusy hops.

T - This is odd...in a good way. Most IPA's that have the citrusy flavors like grapefruit, orange, lemon, etc., seem to come through either on the front or mid-palate, but the guava flavors here are strongly present all the way through this drink. Even minutes after my last sip, I still taste it. Nice prickly bitterness. The finish is sweet, as noted above with the lingering guava flavors.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. There is an unmistakable oiliness here.

D - I actually really enjoyed this one. I had been interested in trying some of Short's offerings for awhile since they seem to be so outside of the box and this one definitely showcases what they can do.

Looking forward to trying some of their others.

This intersting brew from Short's pours a hazy and sandy straw orange with a nice frothy 2 finger that laces nicely.

Oh boy, what a beautiful nose!!! Guava, grapefruit, orange, citrus, a slight toasted oats wheaty undertone. Very nice whiffs here.

Wow, instantly guava, grapefruit, before I even inhale, then a nice blend of citrus, orange, guave, more grapefuit, a nice sour/bitterness from that grapefruit/guava taste, this is really very tasty. I get a nice blend of fresh hops throughout, great freshness, are those cascade hops? Well done Short's. Nice hoppy aftertaste, and good dry almost sour finish, very reminisent of grapefruit ( I guess that is more the Guava). Very very refreshing, alchol is well masked throughout, great creativity, good balance and smooth medium bodied drink.

Short's release a massive number of different beers each year, and it seems that sometimes they may dilute themselves, and just when you start to believe this, they bring out a new beautiful brew like this.

Wonderful, would go nicely with some aged spicy cheese and creamy pasta. I really enjoyed this and will be drinking this frequently throughout the summer.

Cheers!!

Thanks to GrandCruDrew for a couple bottles of this Short's IPA. Consumed during an event as rare as a Minnesota spring - alone in the house, watching my flailing Twins. Against the Royals. AAA baseball at its finest.

Poured into my lovely Dreamweaver glass, a nice amber, redder than your standard IPA. Nose in, there's the guava alright. Grapefruit & pale malt provide backup.

Freedom of '78 is a bitter, bitter brew. You might wanna warn a guy in the nose before you smack him like that. Hard-charging grapefruity hops open with blazing bitterness, reined in only moderately with the input of guava. The fruit-on-fruit violence pairs up nicely. Pale malts peer out briefly, but fade away into a wave of more bitterness to close this one out. Cut a bit of alcohol out of this one, & it's a fine session brew.

Simple but hugely enjoyable. Wasn't sure about the guava, but Short's wedded these in perfect marital bliss. Excellent.

Appearence is light amber, fairly clear with a thin fizz of bubbles.

Smell is possibly the best attribute. I get what smells like citra hops and papaya. The smell fills the area near the glass.

Taste is papaya and guava followed by a sharp orange pith tartness.

Mouthfeel is memorable in that it's quite full bodied and chewy. Viscous.

Overall this is an excellent, unique brew from Shorts. No IPA I've tried compares to the flavors in this beer. Points for originality.

Thanx to AlleyKatKing

A:Poured a hazy orange color with a nice white head, moderate lacing is left down the glass

S:Citrus and tropical hops come thru the nose with a slight caramel backbone as well

T:Same as the nose with citrus hops come thru first with some caramel malt in the middle, the only thing different would be the guava taste that came thru on the back. Very interesting

M:Pretty nice body all together with hops and guava hanging around on the palate

D:This ended up being really easy to drink with some interesting taste to go along with it. Guava taste kinda thru me off but was very delightful. Would definitly drink this again

Pours a color best described as light-amber and deep-gold; highly translucent with a good amount of clarity to it, especially once the chill haze subsides. A creamy white head forms and dissipates pretty quickly leaving some moderate lacing behind. Had this one a little over a year ago and loved it. Pretty excited to have it again, super-fresh.

The aroma is a beautiful collaboration of "tropical" and "hoppy". Intense guava aromas are the most notable simply due to the fact that you don't often find guava in beers. Juicy, ripe, and insanely sweet guava, also giving off some mango-esque notes, too. The hops are full force as well, sitting perched withing the web of fruity goodness; weedy and grassy with some lightly resinous pine. Mild bready malt is apparent in the finale, yet still plays a tertiary role.

I take a sip and I'm in heaven for a moment. This seemingly flawless execution of a guava-nectar injected India Pale Ale is even better now than I remember. The guava jumps out immediately, sending a rush of sweet, tropical fruits all across your palate. Gushing with juiciness and packed with flavor, the guava meshes perfectly with the hops; the grassy, perfume-like, and light pine characteristics happen to pair excellently.

A little bit of a bitterness spike happens halfway through, as if to remind you that you're drinking an IPA and not a cup of guava juice. Malts are a little heavier on the back end, bringing a nice bread and butter flavor to the table. Medium bodied with an ample amount of carbonation, giving a crispy mouth feel. The finish has a nice guava character with a stingy, yet balanced piney hop bitterness.

One of my favorites from Shorts. I don't know if the guava addition could have been executed any better. Definitely a treat to drink anytime of the day. I wish they made this stuff year round.

The short's version...poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a snifter

A: I would have liked a little more head on this beer and a little better retention. The beer is light amber in color and has a white ½ finger head.

S: There's not too much to the smell here. I get a little bit of kiwi and some other piney hops.

T: The guava in this beer actually comes through in the citrus hop taste better than I had expected it to. The bitterness at the finish of this beer is very nicely balanced and gives it a crisp clean finish.

M: Near perfect for this style. This beer sits on the tongue nicely and has a perfect viscosity. The beer also has a perfectly balanced aftertaste.

D: I thought this was a very easy drinking, good tasting IPA. I'm really glad it comes in 6 packs of 12 ounce bottles.

Thanks to Another6Pack for this beer! 12 oz bottle poured into my IPA goblet.

Appearance: Crystal clear light golden beer with a frothy white head that settles quickly and leaves enough foam to lace a little.

Smell: Pine mixed with indistinct tropical fruits.

Taste: Distinct guava zap on the first sip. The tartness of the fruit combine very nicely with the bitterness of the significant amount of hops in this beer to make a really potent combination. The malt backbone stays out of the way in the taste of this beer.

Mouthfeel: This is on the lighter side of body with prickly carbonation that accentuates the potency of the tart/bitter combo mentioned above. The finish is long bitterness.

Overall: This is a very good beer, and I am thankful that I am able to try it. I wish I could get it more often.

This review is going to be largely lifted from my review Half Acre version, with only minor changes to highlight differences. Served in a Goose Island taster pint glass.

A - Pours with a finger and a half of soapy white foam that settles to a thin cap and leaves spotty lace. Body is a lightly hazed transparent golden color.

S - I find the Short's version to have far more grapefruit and citrus character. The guava is more of a supporting flavor that imparts a bit of fruity muskiness. There's a bit of light sugary malt in the periphery.

T - Tastes like guava juice. No, really. Starts with fruit juice flavors, and ends like juice - slightly bitter and acetic. As I drink more, I get some hop flavor coming through with citrus zest, but there's almost negligible malt character - perhaps a touch of sugar in the finish as it warms up. Strangely compelling.

M - Very juicy, with low carbonation, and a sticky finish. Could use a bit more dryness.

D - Absolutely crushable. I went through my 6oz in under five minutes. Hope Short's makes this in the summer, or Half Acre puts it into cans, as it's really refreshing. I think the Short's version is a mild improvement - I'm guessing they learned from Half Acre's attempt and subsequent challenges.

As others have pointed out, this is most definitely not retired, it is a collaboration between Shorts and Half Acre that is released annually in the spring. I remember missing out on getting any last year, and jumped on two six packs this year when I found some. This was my first time tasting this brew, and I was not disappointed.

A- Deep orange, slightly hazy at first, with a nice head that vanishes quickly. Very little lacing, low carbonation present.

S- Tropical fruit aromas, guava, pineapple, and citrus provide a quite pleasant nose and make you desire that first sip right away!

T- The presence of guava and slightly sweet fresh tropical fruits explodes on the tongue, followed by an herbal piney hop flavor. There is no harshness, just a nice smooth blend of guava, pineapple, mango, grapefruit, and piney hop flavors. The initial sweetness quickly transitions to a nice mellow hop finish. Delightful!

M- Low carbonation level, a bit on the thin side.

O- Absolutely love this beer, smells and tastes great. Would prefer a bit more body and carbonation, but the balance of tropical fruits and hops are truly delightful. I will be stocking up on this, as it is only available in limited quantities on a seasonal basis. Highly recommended!
