12 fl. oz. bottle
Served in tulip glass

This beer pours amber in color with golden highlights. It is hazy and copped with a couple inches of off-white head.

It smells like grapefruit juice. There is a lot of citrus going on here.

The taste is loaded with grapefruit as well. Citrus flavor are right on par with my palate. Maybe a slight pine finish.

Moderate mouthfeel

For a long time I have heard how great Short's beers are. Until this point I would only consider Cup A Joe great from what I have had. I finally found a honey hole in Detroit and am getting to try some of the better seasonals versus the shelf sitters that I usually find in picked over stores. I am seeing the light, finally! This is a very good IPA. It fits my palate well.

Fantastic and underrated beer. The guava and citrus dominate the smell and come through in the taste, and the hops give it a nice crisp finish. Outstanding summer IPA.

One of the best beers I have ever had. Right when you open the bottle you smell the guava and it is refreshing. It brings a sweet flavor that makes it the perfect summer beer without adding fruit like orange or lemon. When you taste it, it shocks you with the flavor. First it's fresh and fruity then the hops kick in for a distinct finish. I thought t was very cool that it was a partnership beer in Chicago especially since Short's does not sell outside of Michigan.

tastes just as described... I'd probably enjoy it more if I was big into grapefruit type tart flavors, but another good beer by shorts.

Poured from bottle into trusty tulip. Color is a bright, shiny orange with a bubbly white two finger head that dissolves to a soapy cap with some lacing. The smell of guava is the first to reach the nose (more prominent this year than last, if my memory serves) then coppery pine, citrus. Grass and floral notes.
The taste, not surprisingly, is juicy guava; sweet, juicy guava and citrus. There's a hoppy bite on the end to let you know it's an IPA. Delicious, refreshing, and makes you wish it was sub-5% so as to be sessionable. The aroma coming from the empty bottle alone is enough to water the mouth.

Poured into a tulip, this IPA has a quickly dissipating white head with a hazy orange body. You can easily smell the citrus and guava from this beer from afar with tons of grassy notes as well. It has a extremely guava taste with a slight bitter aftertaste but a nice shock of citrusy hops and a piney resin, sweet but not too sweet.

Just exploding with guava. More guava, a little pine tar, followed by guava. The fruit flavor, although dominant and in your face, never comes across as artificial. Tart and sweet at the same time but finishes dry and piney. Bursting with fruit yet not overdone. One of the only shorts releases I really look forward to every year.

12 oz. bottle dated March 30, 2015.

L: Deep golden hue; half finger of head retreats into a sudsy foam; good clarity, no sediment present.

S: Intense nose of guava and mango; overripe strawberries, raw honey sweetness, blueberries, lemon rind; west coast IPA leaning aromas.

T: Tropical fruits, cracker malt base makes its presence known on the back end, lemon-lime, agave plant sweetness but finishes dry. Very drinkable.

F: Slick, resinous mouthfeel, somewhat thin but refreshing. Mid-level carbonation.

O: Tropical fruit forward IPAs are slowly becoming somewhat of a novelty now, but this Short’s / Half Acre collaboration was ahead of the curve when Freedom of ’78 was released years ago. Would be great in cans in the summer as a change-of-pace beer, but I will take it when it hits shelves in Michigan annually as an early spring release.

12oz bottle dated 3.31.15 and enjoyed on Easter Sunday 2015

A: Slightly hazy orange-ish gold with a thick, foamy head. Love the slightly unfiltered look

S: Pure guava. Guava, guava, guava.

T: Guava juice and a touch of pine sap. Fruity, juicy, and bitter. Really, really nice stuff.

M: Actively carbed, crisp, dry, and bitter.

O: I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The nose just explodes with guava, and the flavor profile pretty seamlessly melds the sweetness from the guava and the bitterness from the pine. Definitely a fruit-forward beer, but it's not even close to being overly sweet. This is a great take on a tropical IPA.

One of my favorite ipas. The guava works perfectly and the smell is amazing. My favorite shorts beer by far. Only complaint is this year the back end if the taste seems slightly off this year from years past. Still a great beer, highly recommended from any ipa fan.

Golden copper pour with barely any head. This is one of the best smelling ipa I have ever had.. Pineapple, mango, minty freshness, guava, honey... Very sweet tropical fruit aroma.
The flavor is a bit bitter as I take the initial sip, then immediately encounter that delightful tropical fruity hop profile. Finishes with a sweet bready flavor. This is delicious.
Medium in body with lower carbonation.
This is one of the best shorts beers I've encountered so far. A lot like half acre's heyoka.. Hmm I wonder...

12oz bottle, indeterminate bottling date. Thanks Kevin. Poured into an unlabeled snifter today, 4/12/2014.

App- Hazy orange body, small one finger white head with little retention, not much lacing.

Smell- Sticky but faint tropical fruit, a bit of burnt rubber, faint pale malt breadiness and sweetness.

Flavour- Pale malt sweetness up front, a little bit of citrus flavours dance on the palate, receding to a burnt rubber flavour accompanied by an unmistakeable tropical fruit flavour, probably guava or papaya. This is not a very tasty profile for me, but I see what they're trying to accomplish here.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied, slightly undercarbonated, resinous body that isn't too bitter. Faint tropical fruit flavours on the backend. Solid.

Overall- Decent pale ale that certainly does incorporate some tropical fruit flavours into the beer, especially the good aspects. However, the faint burnt rubber-like off-flavours is taking a lot away from my enjoyment of this beer.

I really wanted to like this beer after reading other reviews and buying into the hype. Picked up two Freedom of '78s in a mix-and-match 6 pack.

A: Light sunrise orange with just a tad of haze and a small dissipating head.

S: The smell was good. Standard sweet IPA smell with good hints of fruit. So far so good.

T: This is where it went down hill for me. The guava took over in the taste department and left a terrible aftertaste. Yuck!

M: Just a light carbonation on this one. Boarder line watery.

O: I have never had guava, now I know why. The after taste is like a seagull shit in my mouth. Freedom doesn't taste like that. Not sure If I am gonna drink the second one or dump in down the drain.

Bottle into tulip

Appearance - A pale orange, slim white head, pretty transparent but still has the slightest haze.

Smell - Pine, juicy tropical fruitiness, also some grapefruit and what suspect to be subtle guava.

Taste - Juicy sticky fruity resin and grapefruit right at the beginning that contributes a tart quality that eventually becomes more mellow and flavors of dryer pine, grapefruit zest, and an outstanding fruity flavor of guava that seems to carry well the entire time.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, medium carbonation, refreshing, tart.

Overall - Good beer. First time having this beer and I'm gonna say I'm not surprised by the taste. Defintely looking out for this one again next year.

Sever in a pint glass at The Rattlesnake in Boston.

Appearance: A one finger head reduced head to a thin layer. It is a hazy pale orange with some vision of bubbles coming up through the glass.

Smell: Nice light notes of grapefruit, tangerine, and orange with some toasted bready notes and caramel sweetness.

Taste: Same as above with lingering bitterness in the rear. Really chewy and hops fizzle out quickly.

Mouthfeel: Chewy, lingering bitterness, medium bodied, and medium carbonation. Really chewy.

Overall: Not too shabby, but I dig the Humalupalicious from these guys a bit more.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip. ~ 3 wks from bottling date.

A: Goldenrod / light copper color. One finger of fine soapy head that fades quickly, leaves a moderate amount of lacing on the glass as I drink.

S: Pure tropical fruit. Smells like the roadside juice stands in South America, guava, mango, papaya. Very "tropical." I get no banana or clove esters (a definite plus).

T: True to the nose up front, tropical guava-ness. A very mild malt balance in the middle that fades into some typical piney hop bitterness. There is a subtle something distasteful on the backend that lingers into the aftertaste - soapy peppercorn.

M: Relatively thin, moderate to upper level carbonation with significant amounts of fizzy rising bubbles. I would have hoped for a slightly thicker mouthfeel to coat the tongue and release more of those tropical notes.

O: Good but I can't rave. The guava smell is perfect. Absolutely incredible, but it doesn't translate perfectly to the taste.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Bottling date slightly rubbed out like all Short's bottling dates are but seems to be 02/25/14

A- Pours a light copper, medium gold with a small white head. Good degree of clarity.

S- Got that evergreen pine that many Short's IPAs have. A bit floral as well and then there is a medium tropical guava aroma from the added guava juice. Slight honey character.

T- Similar to aroma but the guava comes in a bit more. Floral notes as well, less pine then in the nose. Some slight citric sourness. Finishes with a medium-light malt. A bit watery.

M- Carbonation is correct, this beer is a bit watery in the finish.

O- This beer is not too bad, it's a bit overpriced IMO as it's more on the higher end price range compared to most Short's offerings. I don'think the sprucey pine really works with the fruit nectar but it's dialed down to where it's not offensive. Actually expected this to be sweeter given how sweet some of Short's other beers with added fruit are.

Bottled on date is scratched away but this was bottled no more than three weeks ago, I know, so I'm not concerned about that. Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass. Priced at Short's usual $2 for a single bottle.

Appearance: Reasonably hazy, and even more hazy if you get all the goodness from the bottom of the bottle into the glass. About a finger of a soapy head that dies down pretty quickly. A bit of patchy lacing. It looks alright. I tend to nit-pick -- I much prefer the look of a creamier head over a soapy one. Minor annoyance. The bottle itself looks quite a bit different from Short's other stylings, but it still stands out a bit, despite it being a mostly dark logo. Maybe the art was done by somebody over at Half Acre for this one? In any event, pretty decent looking all-around.

Smell: Yeah, guava. Smells really tropical as you'd expect. Guava/mango/peach aroma more so than a kind of pineapple. Not much else to mention as it really just smells tropical. I don't get earthiness or really any malt in the aroma.

Taste/feel: Mild/moderate carbonation with actually an unexpectedly quite thin mouthfeel.. that's the first thing I notice, and that's my biggest knock on Freedom of '78. The flavor follows up what was on the nose, with loads of guava and mango with only a slight bit of pine on the finish. Finishes pretty dry as well. Not nearly as bitter as many Short's IPAs seem to be either, which is a good change of pace.

Freedom of '78 is a good beer. It's relatively one-note with a guava/mango sort of flavor and aroma going on with only the slightest pine aftertaste, but it works. It's way too drinkable. It drinks like it'd be about 5% rather than 7%. Again, low sort of carbonation, but my only real problem with this beer is its mouthfeel... it could use a bit more heft. Regardless, this is a delicious IPA.

This ale pours a golden copper color with very little head but a decent white lacing. The nose is packed with guava and tropical fruit notes. There is some citrus and pine and also a note that I can only describe as BO. Its not overpowering but does add a slightly off note to the aroma. The body is medium with a little chew but mostly just smooth sippable ale. The flavor follows the nose perfectly. Lots of guava and tropical/citrus hops upfront. A slight amount of malt to balance the beer. And unfortunately that BO note lingering on the tail end of the beer. I keep trying Shorts but the results are always the same....mediocre. I feel like if they focused on making a handful of great beers they would succeed, but instead they try to make sooo many different offerings that they all just turn out middle of the road.

Bought from Spartan Spirits a long time ago.

Had this rating on my comp for some time forgot to post it.

A&S: Very strong sweet smelling (smells like guava), which balances nicely with a citrus hoppyness. Cloudy orange colored beer, with unfiltered elements. Thin fizzy white head that fizzles out quickly.

T&M: Very sweet (guava) upfront, fades to sour midway through. The classic IPA bitterness comes through late. Medium bodied that feels pretty coarse, low to medium amounts of carbonation.

O: Highly drinkable, but I feel like I got sick of it midway though the bottle. I thought this was a nice take on the IPA.
