first of all this beer is not retired!! they have this every year since its creation.(2010)

bottled 4-9-13
poured 4-17-13
this is one of my top 10 from short's if not top 5. the smell of this beer is amazing. nothing quite like it. the taste is fruity from what i can only asume is guava. not your traditional IPA for sure. I can only say good things about this brew and company. if there is a bad reveiw of this beer they either 1. got an infected bottle(which doesnt happen much anymore)2. they dont like the taste of guava 3. or they got a really old bottle that wasnt refridgerated.

but as for me i think this beer is just outstanding.

also thanks half acre, dont know much about you guys but hopefully that will change

Thanks Saisonrichbiere for the hook up on this bottle

The beer pours a slightly hazy golden orange a white head that dissipates quickly...into nothing. There is no lacing or sediment. The nose is ripe with sweet tropical/citrus fruits and a touch of pine. The sweetness comes on a bit harsh; definitely a stronger sweetness than I'd prefer. Honestly, it's very similar to mikkeller's tigerbaby in appearance and nose, but has a bit more bite from the hops. The taste is also rather similar to tigerbaby with a huge presence of sweet tropical fruits (guava, grapefruit, mild pineapple), but there is a touch of malty graininess involved as well. The mouthfeel is relatively medium bodied with way too much sweetness. I would have liked a subtle, drier mouthfeel with a crisp, lingering hoppiness. Great beer that meets my expectations from its description and the two collaborating breweries. Definitely worth trying.

Pours a color best described as light-amber and deep-gold; highly translucent with a good amount of clarity to it, especially once the chill haze subsides. A creamy white head forms and dissipates pretty quickly leaving some moderate lacing behind. Had this one a little over a year ago and loved it. Pretty excited to have it again, super-fresh.

The aroma is a beautiful collaboration of "tropical" and "hoppy". Intense guava aromas are the most notable simply due to the fact that you don't often find guava in beers. Juicy, ripe, and insanely sweet guava, also giving off some mango-esque notes, too. The hops are full force as well, sitting perched withing the web of fruity goodness; weedy and grassy with some lightly resinous pine. Mild bready malt is apparent in the finale, yet still plays a tertiary role.

I take a sip and I'm in heaven for a moment. This seemingly flawless execution of a guava-nectar injected India Pale Ale is even better now than I remember. The guava jumps out immediately, sending a rush of sweet, tropical fruits all across your palate. Gushing with juiciness and packed with flavor, the guava meshes perfectly with the hops; the grassy, perfume-like, and light pine characteristics happen to pair excellently.

A little bit of a bitterness spike happens halfway through, as if to remind you that you're drinking an IPA and not a cup of guava juice. Malts are a little heavier on the back end, bringing a nice bread and butter flavor to the table. Medium bodied with an ample amount of carbonation, giving a crispy mouth feel. The finish has a nice guava character with a stingy, yet balanced piney hop bitterness.

One of my favorites from Shorts. I don't know if the guava addition could have been executed any better. Definitely a treat to drink anytime of the day. I wish they made this stuff year round.

poured from bottle into a pint glass. Pours an orange/gold color with a small head.

Succulent aromas of hops, citrus, navel oranges, guava, and a touch of florals.

Medium bodied with a lot of freshness to the flavors of guava, resin, hops, oranges and citrus. The feel is good, but slightly lacking a little bit on the mid.

This is a real fun IPA. Has the hop forward characteristics, but it isn't too overpowering.

Thanks to Peter for this one. Dated 03/30/12, so about 5 months old. Will keep that in mind. Poured in to tulip.

A - Dark yellow with a tinge of amber and a small layer of off-white head.

S - A huge guava aroma up front with some lighter peach notes present. The bitterness seems as expected given the freshness and a touch of sweetness is evident in the background.

T - A fairly prominent bitterness up front, which is welcome given the freshness. A massive guava flavour is present, which compliments the bitterness well. The malt base, and perhaps the guava as well, contribute a sweetness that is a little too prominent but I would image that when fresh, this balance would be quite a bit different. The guava takes centre stage here, as advertised.

M - Medium body. Light carbonation.

Honey pour, almost no head, great lacing. Smells of grapefruit, guava, citrus, and pomegranite. Tastes of guava, pineapple, grapefruit, and lime. Very well balanced, an incredible IPA, its somewhat similar to hopslam really, though a little fruitier, and slightly less balanced. Would drink again.

Picked up as part of a mixed sixer from the good 'ol Beer Baron.

Poured into a regular ol pint glass at the casa.

A: Light Orange with minimal head on the pour.. has some lacing but nothing crazy.

S: Can smell the bitter fruit and alcohol scent is apparent.. up front smells like dark fruit.

T: Wow. Hits you right away with bitter fruit and fresh pineapple notes (delicious)/citrus/then you can pick up the guava fruity-lingering flavor

M: Complex and fruit flavored, definitly picking up the different flavors in this brew.. balanced rather well with the hops.. Blown away but the complexity in this bottle!

O: Awesome. Another A+ Beer for an already impressive brewery.. Will definitely pick it up again next time ! Its a must try! Not a staple of the American IPA style, but a brilliant and well put together brew.

This beer pours a lighter bodied, moderately cloudy tangerine orange in color with just a slight off white lacing around the glass. It looks the part. The nose is in your face guava and bitter, piny hops. There is plenty of fruit character, making it easily the most appealing aspect of the beer. The flavors are fruit first, hoppy bitterness second and both come together in the after taste. It's almost juicy and makes your mouth water. It's really interesting. The guava just works really well with the style and could be even better if they used a more fruit friendly hop varietal. It drinks light and off dry. The lingering after taste is nice. Overall this is a really nice IPA. It definitely strays from the norm but is both flavorful and unique enough to keep you coming back.

I don't think I have ever had a straight up 4.5 review, this is my first.
This pours a cloudy orange with minimal head or lacing. I could use more head/lacing but I won't knock it on that. It's still beautiful.
What a great aroma! I can almost smell it as I pour. That guava and the hops mix so well. Very citrusy, enough to make it a perfect Summer beer.
Taste is a mix of sweet, sour bitterness and has an aftertaste that lingers in a good way.
About medium on the carbonation, gives it a nice mouthfeel that goes down quite smooth.
Overall, this beer is bitter sweet in two ways. Taste, and the fact that it will probably not be back for quite some time. I loved this beer and can't wait for the next time I will see it.

bottled 3/30/12. about 6 weeks old.

translucent pale copper color with a decent sized almost white head that quickly recedes and leaves chunky lacing.

Holy Guava, batman. very distinct tangy aroma of tropical fruit. behind that is some more tropical fruit. after that comes a bit of grapefruit and more tangy tropical fruit.

again, guava! tangy and sweet. begins with some hop bitterness before the tangy fruit flavors come in and attack the palate. malts add some sweetness on the backend and a bittersweetness lingers.

thinner side of medium bodied with ample carbonation.

well.... I'm not a fan of guava fruit, but in this iteration combined with some bitter grapefruity hops and a touch of malt sweetness makes this a good beer. a novelty, maybe, but I enjoy it.

Slightly orange fruity coloured with loads of white foam that later leaves a lace trail. Very floral citrus hops, and remarkably the fresh guava. Still, smells like an IPA. Very smooth mouthfeel, the guava flavour is pronounced and dominates though it does not overpower, and is blended with hop oils. Hop bitterness blast in the sediment. Very drinkable and a good one.Bottle from Steve. This was cellared somewhat and would not be as appreciated by pure hopheads. Certainly reminds me of CC Guava Grove.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled 3/30/2012. Pours slightly cloudy golden amber color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some decent spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big orange, grapefruit, mango, pineapple, floral, herbal, citrus peel, light pine, earth, and slight peppery spiciness. Very nice and well balanced aromas, with good strength and complexity. Taste of big grapefruit, tart/bitter citrus rind, bread, herbal, pine, orange zest, pineapple, and earthy spiciness. Good amount of earthy and tart citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, herbal, pine, mango, and earthy spiciness on the finish for a while. Great balance of flavors with the guava character and hop bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and crisp mouthfeel. Very easy and smooth to drink at 7%. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish. Overall this is a great and very interesting IPA collaboration from Shorts and Half Acre. Great balance of flavors; and very smooth and enjoyable.

Poured hazy straw with a little bit of particulate matter floating throughout. No big deal - used to this with Short's brew (e.g. Key Lime). Smelled delicious....mix of apricot and oranges. Tasted just the same with quite a kick of bitterness. A bit of a woody hop taste that is noticeable. I would have preferred the apricot and orange taste to shine a little more.

Another very good beer from Short's!!

Big thanks to michibrew for hooking me up with this one. 12 oz bottle poured into tulip. Bottled 3/30/12.

A - Pours a golden color with a bright white one finger head. Slightly hazy but translucent for the most part. Good lacing.

S - Tangy aroma loaded with citrus and tropical fruit. Some citrus hops and herbs.

T - The flavor begins a little bit tart with some huge citrus rind flavors. Big citrus hops give a dank orange rind flavor. Great bitterness on the finish and the guava is really noticeable in the aftertaste. Fantastic flavor.

M - Tingly carbonation and a light-medium crisp feel.

O - This was probably one of the best single IPA's I've ever had. The guava and other tropical fruits combine perfectly with the citrus hops to create a unique, complex, and delicious flavor. I wish this one could be found in my area.

Bottle to Pint
12 oz

Thanks to ErikKoppin for this one

App- A standard IPA color with a ton of bubbles and floaties in the bottom. A small white 1/2" head with zero cling. Pretty normal looking really.

Smell- A bit of a candy sugar aroma with a pungent fruit aroma. Had a lot of bitter pine and resin behind the nose. Has that undeniable Shorts yeast aroma.

Taste- Now thats's guava. I appreciate the fact they say its an IPA with Guava. Very fruit forward with like the nose a good blend of piney resin. Still has like the nose as well that Shorts specific flavor. It's to me a very unique IPA. You get many flavors behind it but none quite dominate. The guava is a bit sweet with the hops being a bit bitter.

Mouth- A medium body with a lot of Guava and resin on the residual flavor with a semi flat and low bubble carbonation.

Drink- Undeniably shorts. Tasty, semi balanced and sweet. Couldve been a touch better but I enjoyed it. Would like to see it a bit more thin.

Served on draught at Ashley's, Westland, MI., in a pint glass.

A- pours a clear light copper hue, not much head or lacing, with a thin layer of residual bubbles on top.

S- big guava attack, with a strong swell of high grade sour marijuana odor, followed by a grainy malt note, then a crisp, strong hoppy finish. A bit more grainy/malty smelling than a bottle offering, but a huge green, earthy, fruity nose. This smells awesome. I could hang out with my nose in the glass for a while.

T- I love this beer. I was a big fan in 2010 with the initial release, and with this, I am truly excited that they have released it again. Strong guava bite with a big tropical fruit palate- think mango, passion fruit, Hawaiian papaya, sharp pineapple notes. Full, but not too strong hop notes- not too dry, but still prevalent, followed by a mellow, malty grain finish. Extremely well balanced- not too much fruit to put against the grain, very tasty.

M- very smooth with appropriate modest carbonation. Nothing overpowering, a great brew.

O- a great beer. I am not big on beers with a fruit ingredient, but this is truly unique, especially for a Midwest brew. The guava works well with the hop character without being overpowering. A true dark horse among American IPA's. One of the best. Very drinkable. Seasonally appropriate, though I think I could drink this all year. I hope Short's eventually makes this a routine seasonal. I am truly thankful they brought this back.

Pours a light-clear yellowy copper, with much, much carbonation and a thin white ring/ sparse hazy head.

The smell is a nice acidic guava/ mango, entirely tr-hop-ical.

Holy guava me! This flavor comes across HUGE in the nose... how cool to say there exists a GUAVABOMB! Fun, fun beer. Earthy hops deliver a bitter that carries the hops along well. Besides the bitterness, this is a clean-drinking beer- not sweet, and a little dry in the leave. Rarely do I want more sweetness in a beer, but here I think it'd be appropriate. Sticky-icky mouthfeel.

I think someone from Central America would have a better vocabulary to discern the tropical flavors in this beer. It's insanely tropical, and powerfully hopped. Love this one.

2012 vintage. 12 oz. bottle poured into a large, tall tulip.

A: Pours a nice, deep goldenrod orange with a slight haze and with a finger of fluffy white head. The head dissipates fairly quickly, leaving some lacing behind. A decent amount of sediment is floating around near the bottom of this glass.

S: Musty funky fruit mixed in with a healthy dose of both citrusy and earthy hops. Something is kind of off-putting about the nose, but there is something very intriguing about it as well.

T: A healthy dose of that musty and funky fruit flavor hits you first, but it is brought up nicely by both the citrusy and bitter hops on the back end. The earthy notes almost remind me of some type of bread, except unlike with most Belgian-style ales, it is pretty bitter. Easily the most interesting IPA I have ever had, and incredibly tough to describe.

M: This beer is silky smooth on the palate with a nice lingering juiciness. The guava gives this beer a nice juicy mouthfeel that many IPA's just don't have.

O: This is one of the most unique IPA's that I have ever had. So many unique flavors that I have never had in an IPA, or any beer for that matter, before, and that makes it very difficult to review. This beer is not for everyone. It, however, is a very well-executed IPA from Short's, and I will pick up a few bottles any time it is released.

This intersting brew from Short's pours a hazy and sandy straw orange with a nice frothy 2 finger that laces nicely.

Oh boy, what a beautiful nose!!! Guava, grapefruit, orange, citrus, a slight toasted oats wheaty undertone. Very nice whiffs here.

Wow, instantly guava, grapefruit, before I even inhale, then a nice blend of citrus, orange, guave, more grapefuit, a nice sour/bitterness from that grapefruit/guava taste, this is really very tasty. I get a nice blend of fresh hops throughout, great freshness, are those cascade hops? Well done Short's. Nice hoppy aftertaste, and good dry almost sour finish, very reminisent of grapefruit ( I guess that is more the Guava). Very very refreshing, alchol is well masked throughout, great creativity, good balance and smooth medium bodied drink.

Short's release a massive number of different beers each year, and it seems that sometimes they may dilute themselves, and just when you start to believe this, they bring out a new beautiful brew like this.

Wonderful, would go nicely with some aged spicy cheese and creamy pasta. I really enjoyed this and will be drinking this frequently throughout the summer.

Cheers!!

Appearence is light amber, fairly clear with a thin fizz of bubbles.

Smell is possibly the best attribute. I get what smells like citra hops and papaya. The smell fills the area near the glass.

Taste is papaya and guava followed by a sharp orange pith tartness.

Mouthfeel is memorable in that it's quite full bodied and chewy. Viscous.

Overall this is an excellent, unique brew from Shorts. No IPA I've tried compares to the flavors in this beer. Points for originality.

Poured from the bottle into my Short's Pint glass.

A: Light amount of white head, pours typical orangish color. Not a whole lot of lacing going on here.

S: Grapefruit and other tropical fruits, with some sweetness coming from the guava. Also get a little bit of the pine/hops coming through.

T: Very nice meld of the typical IPA tropical and citrus flavors with a bit more sweetness due to the guava. It finishes very nice, the hops are on the backbone but its not very strong.

M: Light bodied, good carbonation.

O: This is a fantastic IPA from Short's. They weren't kidding when they said I'd love this one. I'll be heading up to the store for another sixer to stash before they run out. Well done Short's!

Note: This review was a re-post from my former account, jmkratt, which was hacked and I lost all my reviews...sorry for the redundancy.

Got this as an extra in a trade from my man jopl! Thanks again man!

Poured from a 12oz bottle to a pint glass.

A - Beer poured a slightly hazy orange/amber color with a 1 finger perfectly white head that seemed to slowly fade down to a thin film on the surface with nice lacing.

S - The beer has a nice strong citrus hops aroma mixed with an almost sour fruit tone.

T/M - Interesting flavor. Starts out right where the nose left off with a strong citrus grapefruit hop aroma and a slight sour tone. Then immediately the over powering tart guava fruit flavors meld with a slight malt undertone. The beer finishes crisp and tart.

D - Drinkable beer.

Overall, this is the one of the most interesting IPA's I've ever had and it was a pleasure to have. It's unsual to find such tart flavors to match the bitterness of an IPA.

A - Pours an organish-brown with two fingers of pillowy head.

S - Guava and other tropical fruits are predominant. Aroma is also quite floral with a bit of citrus. Smells very good.

T - Citrus hops, mostly grapefruit, are right up front, followed by guava. Also get some pine hops in the mix. Quite tart throughout, but the flavors meld together really well.

M - Mouthfeel is light/medium and a bit oily. Finish is pretty dry with a nice bitterness.

O - Very nice flavor profile. One of the better IPAs from short's.

Beer is yellow to light amber with haze and a diffuse white head that leaves some lacing and moderate carbonation.

Beer smells like tea, I don't know what hops are in here but it smells like tea.

Beer is thin and has this tea like flavor that dominates the back half of the beer. Not my favorite beer from shorts and I wouldn't call this an IPA. Whatever hops are present in this beer it is difficult to tease them apart from one another and the finish is too dry.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours a clear golden color with a good white head and some nice rings of lacing on the way down. The nose powers through with a strong scent of guava along with some tropical fruits. A bit of mango and general fruity sweetness. Very interesting. The flavor doesn’t work quite as well, as the guava comes out of balance with the hops, though there’s still some citrus and mango in the background. The guava adds a bit of acidity, which is actually quite pleasing. Dry and bitter in the feel. A very solid effort.
