12oz bottle from Plum Market. Bottled 11/24/10.

Pours a hazy, deep golden color with a two-finger white head. Head retention and lacing are moderate to good. The aroma of guava jumps out of the glass along with other tropical fruit and citrus smells. There is also a considerable biscuit malt aroma. Moderately sweet guava and tropical fruit flavors up front with a strong grainy, biscuity malt flavor cutting the sweeter hops on the midpalate. The finish is quite bitter and dry with lots of lingering tropical fruit/guava and lighter biscuit malt notes. Alcohol is pretty well-hidden. Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation and a dry finish. The intensely bitter finish limits drinkability somewhat, as does the interesting, but not very complex, flavors. Overall, a really good IPA from Short's and Half Acre. The guava really comes through, and the flavors, while not complex, are pleasant and refreshing.

$2.30 for a 12oz single @ Jacks. No ingredients listed on the website. A collaboration with Half Acre Beer Co in Chicago.

Pours out to a clear light amber forming a modest white head with average retention and sparse lacing. Mild carbonation. The aroma is sweet with spicy resinous hops with a touch of that skunky Amarillo and the mango of Centennial. Very nice. Sits on top of a sweet malt nose. Mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a medium body. The taste is very very good. I get the skunky MJ of Amarillo with a nice flash of white pepper (since they are going for the Ween thing here), and a touch of some acidic fruit...I dunno if it's Guava or not, but it lightens the body and adds a peculiar fruity sourness. The bitterness is a little sharp, above medium. The finish is dry. Aftertaste of grapefruit pith.

This is a decent IPA with some peculiar qualities. I might buy it again in a pinch.

A- Golden color, semi transparent, about a finger of head when poured, a little lacing
S- Piney/citrusy, it actually reminded me a lot of spruce pilsener
T- A nice piney bitter IPA
M- Medium body and good mouthfeel
D- I only bought a single, but I wish I had at least another one.

A great IPA. Lets hope they bottle this more than once.

April 2012 notes- Really glad they brewed this again. I'm loving the pineapple, pine nose and citrus taste. Shorts puts out a lot of different offerings but every now and then, they hit it out of the park. Changed overall to a 4.0.

12 oz. bottle.

Pretty damn clear golden apricot body. Finger of tight, gauzy, eggshell-white head. Some lacing. Ridiculously citrusy nose! Definite guava too. Grapefruit and grapefruit rind, mandarin orange, and passion fruit as well. Sugary malt presence in the background.

Toasted malts up front. Big citrus juice flavor follows. Grapefruit, guava, and lemon dominate. Acidic, bitter, and even a bit tart. Spicy, cookie-ish malt underneath it all. Grassy, herbal bitterness mixes in near the finish. Candied malt sweetness resonates with bitter citrus hops in the finish. Medium-bodied, with a slightly slick feel. A very citrus-y IPA, and if you like that kind of thing, seek this out!

"talkin' to some joe
hangin' out shootin' shit

i play it off legit"

Poured down the center of the DFH signature glass. Bone white head, standing two fingers tall, works its way back at a moderate clip. The sides of the glass are cakes by a sheet of moth eaten lacing. A nice cap remains throughout. Body is clear and bright, orange in color. Near text book appearance for an IPA.

Pure Guava. Fruit just oozes from the glass. Even with the glass sitting at arms length the Guava, citrus and tropical fruit scents are overwhelming my nose. The fruit does not become too overwhelming, a healthy dose of pine and pith help even out the hop bouquet. Subtle pale malt aroma falls beneath the massive blanket of hop.

With such a pungent hop aroma, it is a forgone conclusion the the hops will absolutely dominate the palate. While this is absolutely correct, how the hop flavor is presented is a bit surprising. Strong pine and pith flavors sting the tongue as the beer rolls across the tongue. The guava and citrus flavors emerge from beneath, as roles are seemingly reversed from what can be observed in the nose. You can really pick up similarities to other beers from the breweries involved. Familiar flavors from Daisy Cutter and Huma Lupa are standing out to me at various times as I enjoy the beer.

Medium bodied. There is a bit of an oily texture left on the tongue. The bitterness balances the sweetness rather well creating a bit of a drier finish.

I am a fan of this beer. Easily my favorite IPA that is coming out of Short's. I hope we see this one annually. Freedom of 78 is just a pleasure to drink. It would be no problem to drink a few of these in a sitting.

Picked up a sixer of this tonight. Drank from big Duvel tulip. The beer poured a dark honey/amber color, with a solid two fingers of frothy eggshell-white foam. Given five minutes, the head died down but left some very bubbly lacing on the side of the glass.

The beer smelled absolutely fantastic. I've had my share of citrusy-hoppy IPA's, but this scent was just phenomenal. It's like being in the islands mon. There were chords of fruity aromas striking in my nose. Detected barely a hint of pineyness.

Taste is very guava-forward. Almost acidic. There is a very pleasant sour (sour like eating a grapefruit without sugar) quality. The hops catch up eventually though and provide some nice bitterness at the end.

Mouthfeel is light to medium, with a good amount of carbonation. This is a very drinkable beer. Three thumbs up!
