Bottle poured into the trusty MID shaker pint.

A- Clean, golden body. Light carbonation. 1-finger, off-white head settles into a thin film. Awesome stick.

S- Oh, those are fresh hops! Lots of grapefruit. Kind of pineapply, tropical fruit for sure. Is this gonna be a hop bomb? Sugary-sweet and doughy background presents itself a little later.

T- Considering the initial aroma, it's nicely balanced off the bat. Toasted bread and a solid citrus punch. Marmalade turns into a grapefruit zest at the finish. A nice slap in the face as you think it's all done. A little aspirin kick. Hopping might get a touch long by the end of the glass.

M- Moderate-full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Light hop tingle. Bone dry finish.

O- This is a winner. A straight forward interpretation of a style for Short's. Ver fresh. While quite hoppy, it stays just within the balance I crave from a Midwest IPA. I would definitely buy this again. Sadly, I think it may be in short supply (no pun intended).

Short's is killin' the hop game this year, and this was one of my most anticipated releases of the year for them. Dan's Pink Skirt pours a cloudy yellow color; bright and sunshiney, especially when held in front of a light. The white, foamy head eventually settles to a skin that rests at about 3-4 millimeters nearly the entire way down the glass, leaving nice lacing in its path.

A very nice bouquet of hops crowd the nose of the brew; plenty of herbal, hoppy spice front and center. Grass, pine, and unidentifiable herbage. Citrus is no stranger to this one, either - plentiful citrus (mostly grapefruit) from the start with a heavier incision of tropical fruits from the middle to the finish. I'm thinking maybe a touch of mango and pineapple. Juicy, hoppy, and very fulfilling to the nostrils.

Whew! I never would have been able to guess how bitter this would be on the palate just from the nose. But wow! The bitterness strikes instantaneously when the liquid hits your mouth. Listed at 159 IBU. One hundred and fifty-nine fucking IBU, are you kidding me? Despite that large number, I wouldn't say this is any more noticeably bitter than beers like Ruination, Hoptimum, or Palate Wrecker (which are all listed with less IBUs I believe?), but it's pretty damn bitter.

Anyway, I'm making it sound like the bitterness is a bad thing, but it's not. Not at all. Sometimes you want your tongue to get slaughtered, and this beer will get the job done. The miraculous thing is how incredibly drinkable it is, even with the enamel-removing bitterness. The hops are spicy, herbal, ashy, and have a big-time "woodsy" and pine-cone finish. Bitter grapefruit pith thrashes about throughout the entire sip.

A minuscule, yet important amount of juicy sweetness comes in the form of tangerines and mangoes, proliferating that nice tropical fruity aroma I was getting. Malt? Hahaha, yeah right. You can't taste any malt here, don't kid yourself. Pale malt finish at best, although realistically, all you can taste is ashy hops and bitter citrus peels. Medium bodied and almost creamy with a reasonably good snap from moderate carbonation.

This is a damn good Shorts brew. They put out a lot of IPAs, but this is what I'd consider "top-tier" for them. It doesn't match up to things like Hopstache or Freedom of '78, but it isn't too far behind, either. Incredible bitterness while retaining crazy drinkability. How did they do it?

Dan’s Pink Skirt pours a nice gold color. Looks clear for the most part. Backlighting gives it a slight orange tint. It’s topped with an off-white head that rises to about a finger in height. It dissipates relatively quickly, leaving a moderate coat of sticky lace behind.

The nose is good. A little more strength wouldn’t hurt. It starts out with strong citric hop notes of grapefruit, orange, and pineapple. Perhaps even a hint of pine. The malt base seems to be a mix of pale and light caramel. It smells a little sweet, but the caramel is held pretty well in check. Smells like hops carry the day. Alcohol is blended well and isn’t all that noticeable. I believe it was listed as somewhere between 6.5% to 7%. Don’t recall the exact number.

The flavor is damn impressive. Hops are very strong from the first sip. They feature citrus pineapple, grapefruit, and orange flavors. It does have quite the bitter kick. There are some light, sweet malty notes, but they are secondary. They do their best to provide some balance, but there’s not much. This one is quite hoppy and bitter. There’s a hint of a toasted flavor that emerges late. It’s not bad, but doesn’t add much. Alcohol is light in the mix. Finishes toasty, hoppy, bitter, and dry.

The body is light-medium. Carbonation feels light and restrained. Given its body, it feels nice and smooth. Needless to say…it goes down super easy. I’m sharing the growler, but could easily finish it myself. It’d be damn tempting…to say the least.

Dan’s Pink Skirt is a really nice release from Short’s. If I recall correctly, this was listed as an American IPA rather than a Pale Ale. The abv (in this release) is also 6.5% to 7%. Whatever it is, it’s chock full of delicious hop flavor and bitterness. It also goes down far too easily. If you have the opportunity, check out Dan’s Pink Skirt. It’s excellent. Weird name…very impressive beer.

Golden-amber color, slightly translucent, a bit of head along the sides. Some stickiness to the lacing as the glass is tipped. Big citrus and pine on the nose. Even a little pithy. I pick up earthiness in the background as well. I can tell this will be bitter. Big citrus and pine hits when tasted, some sweetness, bitter and finishes clean and dry. Not much in the way of malt backbone. Very West-Coasty. Mouthfeel is moderate and well-carbonated. I would get this again. Nice stuff.

I picked up a bottle of Short's Dan's Pink Skirt a couple days ago for $1.89 at The Lager Mill. This is the latest release from Shorts, they have been cranking out some good IPA's this year and I have been wanting to try this one for awhile, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date, but it just showed up so it's pretty fresh. Poured from a brown 12ox bottle into Shorts Imperial pint glass.

A- The label is pretty strange looking, but it's true to the name so I can't fault them for it, it's eye catching to say the least. It poured a nice and fairly clear golden yellow color that took on a slight copper hue when held to the light with two fingers of worth of white head that quickly died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it left some spotty lacing behind. This was a good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness followed by tons of fruity hops that impart lots of tropical and citrus fruit flavors with some nice mango and pineapple aromas coming through. Up next i get some nice sweet and grainy malts with caramel malt like aromas in the background. This beer has a great aroma, the citrus and tropical fruit hops dominate this beer which makes for a very pleasing aroma, it reminds me of Freedom of 78 without the guava.

T- The taste seems to be fairly similar to the aromas and it starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness followed by lots of fruity hops, there's some nice tropical fruit hop flavors in the background, but it's the citrus fruits that really shine through with grapefruits and citrus zest really coming through. Up next i get some clean a slightly sweet malts that impart a nice grainy flavors with some caramel malts in the background. On the finish there's a high amount of bitterness with a bitter grapefruit like aftertaste. This is a pretty good tasting beer, the hop profile was really nice, but i wish the bitterness was toned down a little.

M- Not that smooth, oily, slightly sticky, medium bodied, with a lower amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel was ok, but I felt like it could have been smoother with a little more carbonation.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and a good example of the style, it has the bitterness of DIPA with the strength of an IPA, it's right on the border of the two styles, I enjoyed it. This beer didn't have the best drinkability, it wasn't too smooth and I felt it was a little too bitter, but the flavors did a good job at holding my attention so one would be enough for me, this is just too bitter to drink multiples of. What I liked the most about this beer was the aroma, it was very good, I loved how full of tropical and citrus fruits the aroma was. What I liked the least about this beer was the high the amount of bitterness, if the bitterness was toned down some, it would really help the drinkability. I would buy this beer again if they choose to release it again, it's already sold out at all the stores around me, so i'm glad I got a six pack of this, I would recommend it to anyone who really likes bitter IPA's. All in all I enjoyed this beer, I thought it was a little rough around the edges but I still like the taste and I really liked the aroma. Good job Short's, you guys are on a roll this year and I see no end in sight, not only is Short's one of the most ambitious brewerys I know, it's starting to become one of the most contestant brewerys in the state, keep up the good work guys.
