appearance: light yellowish orange color. almost no head but a small off-white foam that leaves just a touch of lacing on the edges.

Smell: slightly tart flavors mixed with a yeasty spiciness. a mixture of fruits, some sweet some bitter. not super fragrant

Taste: opens up with pear, yeast takes over with a spicy taste. finishes off with a good dose of super lemony hops. and equal bitterness. almost like biting a lemon skin at times. some bready and pale malts fill out in the backside

Mouthfeel: has a bit of warmth for the alcohol content. huge lingering bitterness and very dry.

Overall: a vastly complex and interesting beer. Its pretty good but is a sipper due to the dry warmth and bitterness.

A - Pours a clear honey color, with some fine suspended material leading to a slight haze. Two fingers of boe white head has good retention.

S - Sweet pear, a bit of yeast funk and some grassy hops. Pretty interesting aroma that mostly works.

T - Pear is prominent up front. I got both a pear cider taste, and also a sweet pear that tasted a bit like the syrup from canned pears. There is also a hop bite right away, with Belgian yeast coming in the middle and lasting through the finish. The pear, yeast and hops flavors never really come together for me, but seem independent from each other, which takes away from the enjoyment.

M - Medium mouthfeel that is both a bit syrupy and dry and bitter on the finish.

O - I was looking forward to trying this, but I came away disappointed. It certainly isn't a bad beer, but not something I would revisit.

Thanks to erric for the hookup!

A bright, very pale beer with a nice head. The beer smells nice, there is a little spicy phenol, juicy pears and herbal hops. The beer tastes sweet like ripe anjou pears but also pretty bitter with a lingering resiny oily finish that is slighly unpleasant. There is just a weird interplay between all of these ingredients that just doesn't mesh well, but it doesn't taste bad. Not a bad beer, a nice one to try.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip. This is bottle number three of the crazy Short's beers from MarcatGSB. This one, admittedly, doesn't sound anywhere near as crazy as the others.

Appearance - Clear golden body with a fluffy white head. Nice retention and great sticky lacing. Not enough bizarre food additions to kill the head on this one, apparently!

Smell - Fruity aroma with a slight Belgian funk. It's definitely an aroma with some depth, though. Behind the fruitiness is a distinct hop aroma. It's dank and grassy in the back. Interesting, for sure.

Taste - Ok, interesting yes. Good, perhaps not. I get the pear at the beginning. It's even a touch cidery. The sweetness fades to a complete palate-bashing of hops and black pepper. It runs the complete gamut from sweet and fruity to bitter and peppery at the end. Definitely complex, although in the realm of saisons, I'm not looking to be beaten over the head by complexity.

Mouthfeel - I don't know what the ABV is (come on, Short's!) but it feels like a heavy saison. I'm always looking for lightness from saisons, but often the fruit additions make them a bit syrupy. The bitterness in the finish is also a big detractor.

Overall - I can't call this good, but it's certainly interesting. At first I didn't think I could finish it, but it really is growing on me. I won't have any problem if I take it slowly. Not the refreshing saison I was looking for on a hot afternoon, but decent nonetheless.

Six pack picked up at the brewpub. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a quarter inch of head that settles to a thin cap. Some nice lacing is left on the glass.

Aroma of pears, yeasty phenols, and some tropical fruit. Some herbal qualities linger in the background.

Do not know if it is the yeast strain a lot of American brewers use for their saisons, or the way they use them. But not a fan of all the phenols that seem to perpetuate in the style. If it was not for the bright, pear flavor, I would not have liked this beer. The pear offsets the yeast qualities. A little herbal bitterness in the finish.

Light and lively body. A touch thin with a lot of fine carbonation.

Another example of a Short's beer that would probably be better on-tap at the brewpub.

Bottle into snifter

Appearance - Golden yellow light maltiness, smaller head that settles quickly leaving an intricate lace like quality atop the beer. Ring wraps around the glass

Smell - Juicy and fruity. Starts out with pear and a wheat like Saison note. Hops notes enter more towards the end but not extremely citrus like. Spicy herbal notes, yeast. Lots of floral like aromas.

Taste - More hop forward in the taste as opposed to the smell. Starts out with notes of pear, not to sweet also not tart. Hop character comes forth in the middle part of the taste with citrus notes of orange, grapefruit, lemon. Ends with a herbal spicy ness with coriander and some wheat. Hop character also lingers a little in the after taste.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full body. Highly carbonated refreshing crisp feel.

Overall - Good beer. Has a floral like character that reminds me of a flower shop. The taste offers a unique experience. Not only are you getting pear and sweetness but you get a sticky pungent goodness that is like an IPA. Still has that earthy spice to it with ginger and coriander notes. Try one and decide for yourself.

Bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewing in steps.

A - Accidental moderately vigourous pour produced a serious head (shocking) that dissipated quickly with a beautifully knit lacing around the edges. Brilliant blonde tone. Can't wait.

S - Hops and lots of them. Grapefruit and the citrus for sure with a certain nose of pear. It might be stretching, but a bit of yeast?

T - If you blind folded me, I'd say a Huma with fruit. Very, very hoppy that finally settles down to something that seems like a farmhouse.

M - Very good. Perfect carbonation, crisp, clean, thin and refreshing like a saison should be, but it's not a saison...

O - Picked this up with a pick 6 on a visit to the brewpub. It's not a saison. Maybe it started off with that intention, but it was overly dry hopped and disguises that. Regardless, I love it. It comes off as an extra carbonated DIPA with fruit, and if they want to bill that as a saison, then I'm an American Belgian. Very happy I have two left. Saving them for good company.
