Dubbel Down was consumed on tap at Shorts 8/9/2013. It is described as a dark brown Belgian Dubbel with an appealing tan lace, and sweet sugary aromas with hints of dark fruit and spice. Clove and nutmeg flavors intermix with toasted maple syrup and toffee sweetness creating an appealing complexity on the palate.
Appearance - The dubbel was a murky brown color bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass.
Smell - The aroma had an interesting sweetness. Burnt sugar would be the best description, but other notes are also present such as dark fruit and burnt malts.
Taste - On the initial taste, one detects notes of caramel, alcohol, and a maple syrupy sweetness. Toffee emerges toward the back in the aftertaste. In the aftertaste, the dubbel also mellows toward dryness.
Mouthfeel - Smooth and thick, this had the feel of a dubbel.
Overall - I would love to age this beer or perhaps even have a barrel aged version. This was the highlight of my trip to Short's. While other Dubbels may be too harsh, this one is well balanced.
