We spent only a couple of days in Bruges. Despite the wide variety of available bars and beer-related restaurants (not to mention the bar present in our very own hostel), we returned to this place several times. That speaks volumes for its quality.

The crowd seemed to be mostly tourists, although we ran into a few born-and-raised Brugites (?) that chatted with us. No one minded that we took pictures and / or jotted notes. They seemed to expect it, even.

Apparently there is a third non-smoking room in the back, which I was unaware of, but I sat in the two smoking rooms, and developed some reactions as a result (I am allergic to cigarette smoke). Plan ahead, I suppose.

The servers are attentive and bring the beer to your table, although not all of them pour properly. This is probably just a beer snob complaint, but when it comes to beers that generally have high carbonation, a good pour is a must.

The bottle selection is outstanding, and is presented in a laminated binder. There are only a handful of taps. I'm not sure if they rotate much.

The food platters were decent; mostly snacks, but they were a good way to get some solid food with your beer. Everything in Bruges closes pretty early it seems, so you may rely on their food menu if you're here for a while.

The prices were very reasonable.

Great selection and atmosphere, prompt service. We were having such a great time that we nearly missed the last train back to Brussels.

In my opinion, a precious gem. This barnot only exceeds all levels of expectations as far as selection goes, having three hundred plus beers, and the staff are so incredibly helpful. It had a rustic, local feel too it and it was a perfect way to start the evening. It was a quiet place to really just enjoy the beer!

Named "Bruges' Little Bear" the pub was opened in 1983 and has been a mecca for good beers ever since. This is another small building with tight, or intimate, seating. They offer 300 beers in bottle, with about 4 on tap. Tap beer is just not a big thing in Belgium. We ended up sitting next to a contingent of friendly folks from Sam Adams (Boston Beer Company) who were nearby for an industry conference in Ghent. These are some of the folks responsible for R&D and creators of the boundary pushing Barrel Room beers. We enjoyed discussing American and Belgian beers with those three quite a bit!

Since we had such an outrageous beer list to choose from my wife and I split a Cantillon Kriek and a Boon Mariage Parfait Kriek. Both were wonderful, but anything next to Cantillon pales...

I want to go back here, again and again!
