After visiting both De Garre and the Bear, I was left wholly depressed. Why in gods name can we not have something like either of these two places at home. The closest we've got in Canada is Volo.

Small and perfectly accomadating with more of the to the point but affable flemish service (I'll take it any day over the fawning service at home). A great place to rest after a long day walking around town. Two small gas fireplaces warm you up quickly. While I'm not a smoker I truly prefered the brown cafes to the more modern less smokey newer bars (i.e Erasmus).

Great bottle list, however the pleasure for me thoughout the whole trip was drinking from the van t' vat selection. Draft Bons Voeux, and Hommelbier were oustanding.

You could easily lose a day here. Love the fact that Belgians bring their dogs everywhere including the bar for a drink. Obviously a definite must.

In my opinion, a precious gem. This barnot only exceeds all levels of expectations as far as selection goes, having three hundred plus beers, and the staff are so incredibly helpful. It had a rustic, local feel too it and it was a perfect way to start the evening. It was a quiet place to really just enjoy the beer!

Named "Bruges' Little Bear" the pub was opened in 1983 and has been a mecca for good beers ever since. This is another small building with tight, or intimate, seating. They offer 300 beers in bottle, with about 4 on tap. Tap beer is just not a big thing in Belgium. We ended up sitting next to a contingent of friendly folks from Sam Adams (Boston Beer Company) who were nearby for an industry conference in Ghent. These are some of the folks responsible for R&D and creators of the boundary pushing Barrel Room beers. We enjoyed discussing American and Belgian beers with those three quite a bit!

Since we had such an outrageous beer list to choose from my wife and I split a Cantillon Kriek and a Boon Mariage Parfait Kriek. Both were wonderful, but anything next to Cantillon pales...

I want to go back here, again and again!
