We were already at the door when Daisy opened it at 4:00 PM sharp. We planned to have a couple of beers and move along. We did, 6 hours later...

I started with the wonderfully dry and well hopped Taras Boulba and moved on to a couple of beers that couldn't be had anywhere else. One from t' Smisje even featured this bar on its cartoony label. We moved onto Ichtegems Ouid Bruine, Adelardus Trudoabijier, De Cam Oude Geuze Kriek, Guido, Bolekes of De Konnick, Ave les Bon Voeux and Cuve de Ranke, and that was just to start us out. We would continue the evening tasting wonderful sour beers and all sorts of Flemish oddities that I had not seen before and have not seen since.

Service from both Daisy and the other staff was flawless. They knew each beer on their menu. They were friendly, prompt, and kept the beers coming.

I befriended some young Brits at the next table and they broke out a geography game called Mapominoes. I taught them Euchre and later learned the French version "Quinche" from some other patrons. I put some loud and fat British blowhards in their place, much to the pleasure of the locals present who seemed to have a particular disdain for the drunken Englishmen that frequent Bruges. And we had a fine chat with some Japanese beer connoisseurs.

The Little Bruges Bear was like that. Just being there was akin to attending a planned gathering of the worldwide beer geek society. It was wonderful. With more than 200 exquisite beers to choose from, fair prices, an atmosphere of a quintessential old school Belgian bar, and impeccable service how could it not be.

Before we left the entire family from De Dolle walked in to celebrate their matriarch's birthday. She was turning 91, 92, or 93. I forget exactly. I bought grandma Herteleer her first beer, an Ara Bier of course, and thanked the wonderful family again for the kindness they had shown us the previous evening.

't Brugs Beertje is a must for any true beer enthusiast. One of the best beer bars in the world.

Great selection and atmosphere, prompt service. We were having such a great time that we nearly missed the last train back to Brussels.

In my opinion, a precious gem. This barnot only exceeds all levels of expectations as far as selection goes, having three hundred plus beers, and the staff are so incredibly helpful. It had a rustic, local feel too it and it was a perfect way to start the evening. It was a quiet place to really just enjoy the beer!

Named "Bruges' Little Bear" the pub was opened in 1983 and has been a mecca for good beers ever since. This is another small building with tight, or intimate, seating. They offer 300 beers in bottle, with about 4 on tap. Tap beer is just not a big thing in Belgium. We ended up sitting next to a contingent of friendly folks from Sam Adams (Boston Beer Company) who were nearby for an industry conference in Ghent. These are some of the folks responsible for R&D and creators of the boundary pushing Barrel Room beers. We enjoyed discussing American and Belgian beers with those three quite a bit!

Since we had such an outrageous beer list to choose from my wife and I split a Cantillon Kriek and a Boon Mariage Parfait Kriek. Both were wonderful, but anything next to Cantillon pales...

I want to go back here, again and again!
