On top of them having a huge grocery supply of exotic foods like cheeses, meats, grains, produce, they have a nice big beer department. And I think one thing that I like about Central Market even more than their big beer selection, is that they don't carry Budweiser, Bud Light, Coors, or anything Miller! Although I wouldn't mind if they wanted to carry Miller 1855 beer if that ever released again. They always have up to date stock on the newest beers to the market. The employees that work that department are really cool and helpful, except for this one balding older guy with thick glasses. He's kinda rude. Other than that, go H.E.Butts!

Good selection and knowledgeable staff. Plenty of samples throughout the store as well as in the beer and wine department. If you're a wine drinker you have to come here as well, awesome selection there too. If you are ever in the store, be sure to take your time and if you happen to walk by the beer and wine dept, make sure to ask for a sample. There's usually something good open for tasting. At the Houston location at least there's almost always something good\interesting open. Can't vouch for all the others

Stopped here on a recent business trip. I was hoping for some Jester King, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw a bottle, but alas, it was empty from a tasting. More on that later...

Very good selection, though not very broad. Almost all of their beer is located in an open-front cooler. Nothing terribly rare (though they do have some Brew Dog and Mikkeller, among other imports and a decent selection of locals), but a solid, well-curated selection. If I was grocery shopping and wanted a six-pack, I'd feel completely comfortable knowing they'd have some tasty brews to go with their excellent food. I bought a sandwich from them for lunch, it was outstanding.

They do have a very small section amongst their wines of limited beers. Having seen the bottle of Jester King earlier, I was hopefully that there would be more. No dice. I found an employee and asked if there were any more. She explained to me that they'd only received one case and didn't shelve it. She disappeared into the back to look for more, but came back empty handed. I thought it was very nice of her to go out of her way (way out of her way, this place is huge and labyrinthine) to look for me.

One other note: I had stopped here a couple months earlier and saw bottles of Tokio* from BrewDog for $5 and snagged one, not realizing what a huge discount that was. This time around, the price was up to $12.

Very good, but I'd only go back as part of a grocery trip for high-quality foods.

This might be the biggest grocery store I have ever been in. It takes a little maneuvering to get to the beer isle, and the place is packed with people. The isle is a long cooler stocked to the gills with a wide variety of beer. Lots of Texas crafts like Southern Star, Saint Arnolds, Real Ale, ect. Plenty of other US micros as well. Dogfishhead, Ska, Rogue, Sierra Nevada. A large section for imports as well. Overall, your typical HEB selection plus some more. The service is not bad for a grocery store. Though it is still grocery store service. If you need help it will take a while to flag down someone. Prices seem reasonable, and a little cheaper than Specs. A good place to pick up a sixer or two if you happen to be shopping there, but not a place to browse around for the latest and greatest releases.

Based on one visit, I would most easily compare Central Market with Whole Foods. An upscale grocery store located in an upscale shopping district with a well thought out selection of beer and wine. The beer is all displayed in an open cooler, mostly USA craft beers (I guess about 100 with a strong showing from local breweries such as Real Ale and St. Arnold). Probably also around 40-50 Belgian beers, 20-30 German beers, and 15-20 from the UK. Prices were OK, a little steeper than Spec's but not that bad. Overall a great stop if you're in the area, but otherwise I'd make a move for Spec's as a higher priority.
