Today is T, 12 Mai 2020 & I am in deep isolation during the COVID-19 crisis, giving me ample time to clear out my backlog. This one will CANtinue a few days of imports for The CANQuest (tm). This one came to me from local, in-person trader @tone77 following a trip to Italy!
From the CAN: "Nata del 1773 (Born in 1773)"; "Dreher Birra Lager Originale [undersigned] Anton Dreher"; "Acqua Luppolo Sole Malto (Water Hops Sun Malt)"; "è fresca eppure è nata 1773. è bionda, ma è quella giusta da nortare a casa. è Dreher, la prima birra lager d'Italia, nata Anton Dreher e dalla sua uoglia di godersi la vita. Condividere per credere. Goditela! (She is fresh and yet she was born in 1773. She is blonde, but she is the right one to bring home. [This] is Dreher, the first lager beer in Italy, born [of] Anton Dreher and from his desire to enjoy life. Share to believe. Enjoy it!)".
NO granturco (corn)! 8={} They pulled a sneaky Pete on one of one of the previous ones & I am still unhappy about being blindsided.
I Crack!ed open the vent & beCAN a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. It foamed beautifully to form two-plus fingers of foamy, soapy, rocky, bone-white head with decent retention, slowly falling away to wisps. Color was Straw-Yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4) with NE-quality clarity. Nose opened with a grassy, hay-like Noble hoppiness & then revealed an underlying biscuity maltiness. Mmm. This is what I expect in the style, NOT corn! Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, about on par for the style. The taste was pleasant, rather unobtrusive, slightly biscuity, slightly grassy, but pleasant.
It was the sort of thing to have with a meal of pasta, something that I did many times over as a young seaman at La Maddalena, Sardinia. I did not have a lot of disposable income, but I could read Italian & get by in speaking it so if the Mess Decks were not serving a palatable supper, I would get into civvies, take my liberty card & head out for a meal. The locals loved the young sailor who would show up with a book, order an inexpensive meal, drink their beer & head home at closing without a fuss. I rarely invited shipmates, fearing that they would ruin a good thing. I learned to play bocce, drink espresso & cappuccino, smoke Parodis & choke down Grappa. My mentor/tutor, Giuseppe, hoped that I would marry his daughter, but it was not to be. Maria was a beauty, but we were both young & I wanted to see the world without the CANstraint of a family. 8=(
This was a really wonderful beer! It is about as close to an exemplar of the style as I CAN muster up. Sure, it is not a knock-your-socks-off style & some may dun it for that, but to me in isolation, it evoked some pleasant memories. Finish was semi-dry, just the sort of thing to have with a meal & then have several more of while reading a book in peace & quiet. I had an oven-baked frozen pizza with it & I CANnot be happier. YMMV.

I am in Rome, so I'll do like the Romans and drink this beer. Poured from a 16.9 oz. can. Has a pale straw color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts. Taste is grains, light malts and metallic notes. Feels light bodied in the mouth and overall is a boring and mediocre beer.

Never knew that an Italian version of our Hungarian beer existed...
Had this, Italian-made Hubgarian beer on the Foundation Day of Hungary, in Japan... what else could be more complex than this?
The beer itself feels a bit inferior to the Hungarian original - which isn’t an outstanding beer at all (and I’m using euphemism here on purpose). Looks quite watery, smells half foul and it has an aftertaste of sardines? Could this be real?
Still, on this day it brought be a little comfort - but not by its quality. Funny that I wish I hd the original but I’m sure even if I were in Hungary now, I wouldn’t choose Dreher - we have craft beer lightyears better to choose from instead.
