Just had on-tap at location at 4th St. Brewpub. Last time I had this was at their old Main St. location (a whole block away). It has since improved a great deal.

- Great cloudy florescent orange and yellow glowing west coast IPA.. cloudy like a good hefe, and little to no head, but a swirl or three of lacing. The way I like my IPA's.

- Nice light bready and biscuit scent with a zingy citrus presence and floral fresh hop. Bitterness present. Some very light caramel notes.

- Very smooth and light west coast IPA with a great balance of biscuit/bready flavor, light caramel sweetness, and fresh hops galore without being an oily sticky bomb.. very fresh.

- Refreshing to say the least, and only ever so slightly chewy.. very nice.

- Quite surprised at how sessionable this IPA is as well as being as balanced and good as it is. A very unique and light IPA that does stand out from the stick strong norms of today. High marks for drinkability.

On tap at Belmont Station (Portland).

First of all, this beer has obviously improved much since the first reviews- this is a solid and drinkable IPA.

Cloudy burnt-orange with nice thick off-white head that laces down the glass.

Sweet smells of light malts underneath big citrus (lemon zest) and piney hops. Touch of aspirin.

Citrus hop bomb. Slightly dusty and dank hoppy flavors, grapefruit, citrus zest. Slightly astringent aspirin quality to the finish, but not overly offensive.

Smooth medium body lends a substantial mouthfeel. Pretty drinkable.

My second Main Street ale and it was also lifeless and flat. No head, no carbonation, no lace. That’s two stale beers in a row. Not a good start for a first visit to a local brewpub. The Eager Beaver does possess a crisp bitter flavor with a sharp, bright hop character. But it’s a struggle for even a well-built beer to overcome the flat body and lackluster aroma of a stale tap. Beer should be served fresh, like bread. Who cares what it tasted like three days ago.

Was I served an old beer, a lame beer, or simply a lame old beer? It’s hard to say. Eager Beaver is iced tea color. The pint I drank had a faint aroma that was barely perceptible, but not definable. This may very well be a fine beer when served fresh. Maybe. But it’s a lot to ask of even a fine beer that it should overcome the handicap of its own demise.
