Bishops Arms are a part of the Elite Hotels chain you will almost always find the pub close to one of their hotels. Being a chain, the pubs are quite similar when it comes to selection of drinks and food, interior design (mock Victorian) and management. They try to share the target audience (middle aged, middle class, lots of travelling salesmen) and atmosphere (not too loud music, no large-screen TV-set with sports) and seem to succeed in that: If you like one Bishops Arms, you will like them all.
The incarnation in Norrköping opened in 1994 in the Grand Hotel house, next to the Motala Ström River and a stone's throw from the railway station.
The selection of beers and whiskies is by far the best in the county of Östergötland, and a few of the regulars travel the 50 kilometres from the twin city Linköping just for the drinks. On tap, they stock 20 brands; two of them are hand-drafted from kegs. A pint is 53 SEK. The assortment is slowly rotated, but you can always find some British and Belgian ale, a few wheat beers and a number of domestic and imported lagers and Pilsners. The selection of bottled beer is about 35 brands - some of them are exclusively imported in limited quantities.
When it comes to whisky, they offer roughly 200 different sorts, mostly Scottish malts. Dont miss the expensive shelf on top!
The pub got assembly rooms at the second floor; they are normally open as part of the pub at the weekends. When both floors are open, they can have some 150 guests. On Saturday evenings, there are sometimes troubadours entertaining at the upper floor.
There is a small (and quite poor) non-smokers section located just to the right of the bar.
During the summertime, a beer garden is set up just outside the pub, facing the river. If the wheater is good, the place often gets quite crowded.
The pub grub is OK: The hot meals start at 79 SEK, ask the staff for the tonights special, usually worth its price. There is a selection of snacks and starters from 45 SEK (British crisps are mostly available for 20 SEK). In the weekdays, a buffet is served at a low price between 4 and 6 in the afternoon.
The staff are always jolly and helpful, although the turnover sometimes have been a little high. You can often see off-duty employees sitting at the small table under the stairs. And a pub that attracts its employees is always a good sign.
