A- just short of jet black. thick tan head dies quickly. but is sustained by heavy carbonation. very dark, a little too dark i think

S- smells of alcohol, and lots of dark roasted malts.

T- first taste is of alcohol, then roasted malt, and then lots of sweetness. a bit too roasty. touch of solevent like alcohol. absolutely no sourness or acidity as was expected.

M- very thick and sweet and cloying. carbonation is too high and prickling even through a heavy body. reminds me of an imperial stout i brewed that fermented too hot.

D- this beer would be a drain pour if i brewed it, but i just fell off my bike and don't have any pain killers so this is an unpleasant compromise. too cloying and sweet to be very drinkable.

i really wanted this beer too be good because i took a terrible fall on my bike on the way home from getting it, and because it is from a local (to me) brewery. i could see how this could be good but its not. it tastes like they fermented too hot and didnt let the bacteria work long enough. and botled too early. very sweet and over carbonated. i will try this again in a year or so when i know they have brewed a new batch. very dissapointing.

I read through the reviews of this beer and just had to check it out to see for myself. I wasn't really expecting it to be good, but well...just look at the reviews! They're hilarious.

Pours with some head, but you can tell it's not going to stick around. After a minute all traces of head are gone. Looks like grape juice would if it were brown instead of purple.

For while the head is present: minerals, dark chocolate, roasted malt, light spices, smoke, lactic, astringent and funky. Pretty complex and awesome actually. However, the smell disappears with the head. After the head is gone: faint musty chocolate-covered peanuts. Though almost nothing is coming off it. I'd rate the head smell 4.5 and the no-head smell as 2.5.

I was expecing more from this, given the previous reviews; either good or bad, but I feel pretty neutral about this one. There is something interesting in there but it's too watered down. Light flavours of chocolate, cherries, dust, roasted malt, funk. Dry, chalky finish although I can't really taste any hops. I wouldn't call it bad but don't really think it's great either. One thing it's got going for it is that it's very smooth for 7.7%, no perceivable alcohol at all. Style-wise, I wouldn't know what to call this. The bottle only calls it a strong brown ale. It's vaguely reminiscent of Jolly Pumpkin's Madrugada Obscura stout, which is also a beer riding the lines of category. I like the idea behind it (assuming there was one) but don't feel that it was executed too well.

Too thin for the taste. Light carbonation and a medium-thin body.

After having said all that, this is actually drinkable. I wouldn't buy it again but am not having trouble finishing this pint to myself. It's smooth and it certainly doesn't taste bad. I prefer it to their Reserve actually, but think I'll stop exploring this brewery's offerings after this pint. Both were too strange (in a not-entirely pleasant way). I just had to satisfy my curiosity; these are some of the more interesting reviews I've read of a beer on BA.

Appearance: Dark and opaque brown/black, with a coffee colored head that died off.

Smell: Roasted malt and absolutely smokey. Bamberg malt? Probably.

Taste: Strange...As Beersignal says, there is something weird in this Beer. It sort of tastes like Bamberg, with a dark fruity sweetness, but with an off, burnt taste. The aftertaste is quite smokey, which is good, but that faint funkness needs to either put up or shut up, because something is missing in the mouthfeel department. It lacks fullness. It does however have more carbonation than the other products this brewery produces. Maybe if I sample again in a few months the carbonation will be gone, and the funky infection will take it's place. We'll see.

L: Dark brown beer with a light brown creamy head. Good retention and good lacing.

S: Caramel, sugar, some fruits

T: Lots of fruits, very interesting. Difficult to describe.

M: Body is not as full as I would like, and you don't taste enough alcohol

D: Unique beer, you ought to taste it at least once

Bottle: Poured a deep brown color ale with a large light brown foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of deep caramel and toffee malt with hints of candi sugar and dry fruits. Taste is more complex than I had anticipated with some dry plums and raisins notes with a nice malt backbone which comprises notes of caramel nad toffee. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. A lot more complex then anticipated with no brewing flaws which is somewhat surprising considering the brewery reputation.

I can sum up this beer in a word: "weird". I notice a couple other reviewers saying the same thing. I don't know if the listed style is incorrect, but it didn't have much in common with other Oud Bruin's I've had at all.

Anyway, looks nice in a wine glass. Very dark body, and basically opaque, with a slighly pinkish pale head. Aroma is very chocolatey and sweet, with some sour fruit notes -- smells more like an imperial stout than an oud bruin, and tastes like it too. Notes of coffee mixed with sour fruits and a little bit of wild yeast - actually reminds me a lot of some Jolly Pumpkin brews. Mild funkiness in there as well; not sure if it was intentional or if there's a bit of an infection. More carbonation than I'd like, and slightly weaker body than needed to support the flavour. I'd definitely like to get another one or two of these and see what the consistency is like. My guess is that each one might be a little different.

Picked up at the Metro Johanette in Montreal, shared with biegaman on a fine spring day.

Pours a very opaque cola brown, almost black, red edges, thick tan head, leaves some lacing, good retention. Smell is sweet, very fruity, iron, toffee, strong malt profile, bread, bit of cocoa, very interesting. Taste is sweet fruits, toffee, chocolate, licorice, stoutlike, lactic anise, smoke, bitter finish, touch of alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, high carbonation, warm going down, pretty unique beer. For me more in a Belgian stout category than Oud Bruin, definately a wacky beer, but enjoyable.

I bought this 500 ml bottle back in April 2011 and decided to cellar it for a little while. I finally decided to try it in September 2011 since it said it could be cellared for up to a year and the bottle had no packaged date on it... 4 months on the shelves is nothing uncommon.
Anyways it had a good amount of deposit so I left an inch in the bottle and poured carefully. It had quite a nice amount of head for the pour I did and for the beer glass I used (goblet). The head was very creamy leaving a spotty lacing. It still had a lot of chunks in it and was very opaque. It was a kind of murky brownish/blackish color.
I could definately make out a smokey scent, coffee, sweetness and roasted malts.
It tasted quite malty, with a hint of smoke, in fact it was very complex with a warming alcool taste at the end. As it warmed up you could taste more the alcool and the roasted malts.
It felt quite thick in mouth with good carbonation.
It kind of made me think of Unibroue's Trois Pistoles but less complex and more boozy. It's an average beer but worth a try since it makes you work hard to discover all the aroma's in this one!! I think it's there best offering that I have tried so far.

500ml bottle thanks to Viggo! An outright wacky and wild beer. An odd fusion of styles with distinctly unique character... recommended simply for that fact. If 'neat' is what you seek, look no further than this French-Canadian offering...

A dark beer, oily (not in colour) but in complexion. The body is dark, dark brown. A cocoa coloured, foamy head found in moderate abundance. It would eventually all but disappear, leaving a sleek black surface, resembling that of a lake lit under a midnight moon.

A downright wacky aroma! All over the place. Aroma of cocoa, dark/lightly roasted malts, fruity with strong notes of dates and currants. An almost weird saltiness at times. The characteristics spawned from the wild yeast may be what has led other reviewers to believe the beer had "gone bad". I frequently found my nose buried in the glass with the currants and chocolate mousse becoming more and more prevalent.

The mouthfeel is an experience unto its own; Multi-layered. Beginning silky, then bitter, with flavours late and slow to set in. Lactic and alcoholic. The mouthfeel has a strong lactic sourness that is thinned out by the alcohol. The body became more thick through the tasting.

More than enough flavours to keep it interesting. Flavours of dates and cocoa. A strong suggestion of black licorice, the anise really lingering on the tongue. A little Flemish in character but in many ways much closer to a stout. A strong currant taste with rich chocolate truffle. Slight smoke on the aftertaste. Fairly sweet. The equation became simple:
currants + anise + smoke + cocoa/chocolate truffle. And it = tasty.

Worth trying? Certainly. Worth cellaring, revisiting later? At first I thought no, but truthfully I'd be very curious to. It took some time and warming, but I eventually concluded I really was, not only enjoying, but simply liked this beer. Thanks again Viggo for keeping me in mind while shopping in La Belle Province!

It's hard to know exactly what they're trying to do here. How do I approach this? It's a lot easier to describe what it is rather than what category it falls under. I would think, however, that the BA entry for this as "Flanders Oud Bruin" is most likely mis-labeled. While it is a wacky fusion of many things, it may be best described as a milk stout with jacked up alcohol and wild (and curiously unique) yeast.

1" yellowy-tan foamy head. Big-N-small bubbles. Dark, dark brown body. Almost black. Wow! Mucho cocoa in the nose. Nutty, roasty, a little fruity. Quite stout-like. The beer starts with smoky, fruity cocoa. There's a sourish fruity full middle. Finish is very wine-like, and shows a little more dusty cocoa. Very interesting: smoky, tangy, fruity, sourish, grainsy, roasty, chocolatey, vinous. When warm it's almost a nice stout. What a great, full, tasty brown. Excellent.

bière brune très foncée, presque opaque, mousse brunâtre, onctueuse, nez frais mais sans odeur, bouche liquide, un peu de torréfaction, sans intérêt, on parle de porto sur la bouteille (sic), je n'aime pas ce genre de produit ambivalent.

This one left me a little perplexed. Clearly infected but interesting and good nonetheless. (Maybe they meant it to be this way but I doubt it... will check it out).

Black robe with a diminutive and evanescent cap of foam that clears house early and leaves no trace of its existence. Clarity is hard to judge due to the opaque nature of the brew.

The aromas are largely dominated by a smoky roastiness up front which never fully capitulates but allows notes of black licorice to surface mid way and hints of black cherries and currants to trail behind the charred character.

This rather dry beer (hints of cardboard give the brew some of its texture) is sour and sweet up front and buttressed by firm notes of roasted malt which give way to subtle hints of dark fruits (currants, blueberries, blackberries and black cherries). The finish is mildly bitter like semi-sweet chocolate wrapped in roastiness but always accompanied by the barnyard funkiness of the brettlike character.

If this is the result of an accident, it is a tasty and complex one comprised of many layers that I will be trying again!
