Many reviews of this mention the next-door vintage cellar, but I cannot speak for that. However, I can compare this to other Virginia Kroger stores (I mostly went to ones in the Roanoke area, though).

For a Kroger, this store has a very good selection of craft brews and imports, as well as having typical supermarket macro beers if you so choose. It does not have as extensive a selection as the Kroger on Brambleton in Roanoke (if you must go to a Kroger for beer, and are in the area, go to that one), but still has one of the better selections to be found at a supermarket.

Being in a Kroger, the quality of the beer is extremely reliable and prices are affordable. Service was rated highly due to the self-checkout line, which I like.

So, as others have said- maybe try the Vintage Cellar first, or, I would recommend the other Kroger in Roanoke as its selection is better. Still, this is a pretty good store for beer and it's got other things if you need 'em!

While it's nothing compared to The Vintage Cellar just beside of it in the shopping center, This Kroger has a great selection and good prices for the area. The prices are slightly cheaper than The Vintage Cellar, so you can shop there first. The service is bland, just like at any grocery store, but it's the only one I've ever seen real Belgian Beers at (St. Bernardus, Chimay, etc.) They have a great Rogue selection as well, even the stone bottles for aging. They also have all the cheap American swill you need, I'll pass on it though... and a large beer wall outside their little cave for 6packs and such. Not a bad place by far.

This is usually the grocery store I go to when I need good beer, cheap (or the Kroger on Main Street). The selection is better than most grocery stores and the prices are very reasonable. There is a good variety of domestics and imports and the usual American fizzy yellow beer (e.g. A-B, Miller, Coors). They carry a good variety of seasonals as well, which is very nice for the changing of seasons in college. Bottom line, when you're in a crunch, it's nearing midnight, and you can't stand to drink another warm Natty Light....this place will brighten your weekend significantly.

This is always my first stop in Blacksburg before I hit Vintage Cellar. The selection is descent, and the prices are generally cheaper then VC. The selection isn't as good, but they have some standards that are always on hand. DFH, Smuttynose, Troegs, Brooklyn, Unibroue, Rochefort, St. Bernardus, Stone and Ommegang to mention a few brands. Generally widely available stuff as opposed to seasonals or bombers. Just as a point of reference on my last trip I priced a case of Mad Elf at VC vs. Krogers the difference was $11 in favor of Krogers. Pretty much self service, but hey it's a grocery store.

I was passing through Blacksburg this past weekend abut it was early in the morning and the Vintage Cellar was not going to be open. Thankfully, this Kroger is open 24 hours and has a pretty nice beer selection.

Three big collers full of beer, not counting the walk-in cooler as well as some room temperature beers. A really nice selection of American craft beers as well as British, German and Belgian imports. I got soem Troeg's and some Stone beers since those aren't available in GA.

Stuff looks fresh and I didn't need any service save the checkout. Prices seem to be really good.

The selection does not rival Vintage Cellar but in a pinch, it's a nice backup.

I have to admit I'm always suprised by the variety at this kroger. They have a huge walk in fridge for the cases and macrobrew style beers, they have a wall style fridge full of imports and microbrews at decent prices. The even have some singles. They also do a good job of getting seasonal specials in and keeping them for a while. I have actually talked with their beer buyer(i believe that was his title) at any rate he tries to do a good job of keeping the more popular microbrews in which is good to know. When i go back to Northern Virginia im always annoyed by the poor selection at the grocery stores, so high marks to this college town kroger for not just carrying the macrobrew cases.

This is a great store to beer shop if nearby Vintage Cellar is out of something. Kroger may still have some of whatever you're looking for. I've been able to pick up six packs and cases of stuff such as SN Bigfoot, SN Celebration and SA Double Bock long after VC ran out. The prices are better too on just about everything. I was able to pick up some 750's of Abbeye De Rocs Grand Cru and Triple Imperiale for $5.99 each! I only gave the service a 3.0 because it seems like they pay more attention to wine advocates, but isn't that the case with just about every grocery store with a good selection of alcoholic beverages? Check this place out if you're in the neighborhood.

This grocery store is in the same shopping plaza as the Vintage Cellar, and is worth your time to visit when you're in Blacksburg, to visit the VC. The store has the best selection I've seen in a grocery, and their prices are cheaper than the nearby, Vintage Cellar. Three coolers, including a walk-in, offer a very nice variety. Several Belgian selections are available, including St Bernardus, and a few lambics. Dozens of American microbrews are available in sixpacks, and on my visit of 10-15-04, they had Lawson Creek Pale Ale, which is not available at the Vintage Cellar. I've never seen Lawson Creek anwhere, so I picked up a sixer from this Minnesota, brewery. I also bought some singles of Chimay, which were attractively priced.
Service was nonexistent during my visit, but it was a busy, Friday afternoon and this is a large, grocery store, afterall.
Still, the selection is vast and the pricing is better than the Vintage Cellar for the same items. It's worth stopping here before going to the VC. It's easier on your budget.

Ive probably been in this Kroger a few dozen times in the past two years when I have gone down to visit my parents in Blacksburg. Nice open faced coolers that are well arranged. A walk in cooler that holds cases and such. THe beers are well organized by import, region and macro vs micro. The seemed to have someone working in the beer and wine department who would help you if you needed assistance. The selection while not full of hidden rarities is solid none the less. Most major craft brewers and imports are represented as well as most major Virginia brews. Not a large selection of larger format bottles, but those are difficult for a grocery store to have and store. Over all a good place to go in especially if you are buying for a crowd as the prices are better than the Vintage Cellar. I would shop here for every day beer, while hitting VC for harder to find items.
