Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #50 (March 2011):

Expected massive head rises to the top of the glass and sticks all the way down; the golden hue is clear and bubbly. Big wafts of hemp seeds, faint cattiness, blond tobacco, grapefruit pulp, green peppercorn, tree sap and mint let us know that the hops are serious here. Malt flavors all line up ... a smooth ale. The hops cover the malt with ripe orange and oily tobacco resin flavors; bitterness is strong, but there is very little bite here, which is more than enough to tilt the beer deep into the Imperial IPA realm. Some tropical fruit and alcohol in the middle and a slow warmth in the hoppy, dry finish. Hops and alcohol bring this beer to where it’s at—a bit of a short story, but a good read. (765 characters)

New to Maine, pretty nice DIPA.

In a tulip the beer was a hazy copper color with a medium-sized off-white head. There was a little bit of lace.

Lots of piney hops in the aroma. Some citrus, mostly orange. Sweet malt background.

Taste followed form. Resiney, piney hops. Some orange and grapefruit. Malt background.

Viscous mouthfeel, still sweet. (350 characters)

I live very close to the brewery, this is a delicious DIPA. Not mind-blowing good, but It has all the characteristics of a classic west coast DIPA, citrusy, piney and an added malt backbone that really makes the finish quite sweet and smooth, the only thing I don't like about it is at 9% it has a pretty heavy mouth-feel, but that's why I drink it very cold. I can grab a 22 for 5.49 so I expect this will frequently be visiting my fridge. Now if only i could buy black diamonds MOEsaic in stores. (498 characters)

Bomber w/o bottling date/freshness info

Pours clouded darker apricot, quality looking khaki head, stays nicely, then goes to a fine bubble film and leaves spotty lace.

Tropical fruit nose with pineapple coming forward.

Tasty DIPA, tropical notes, lime, spice, more pineapple, well hoped with pine and resin, enough malt to boost drinkability and quite pleasant on the palate.

Love the style, like everybody else in BA, this is an quality example and well worth a try. (471 characters)

The Beers of California

#41

Bottled Date: None

A: Clear pale golden yellow with a finger and a half white foam after an aggressive pour. Appears to be well carbonated and the foam does a good job of sticking to the glass as it slowly fades.

S: Moderate hop nose dominated by citrus, pine, and grass. There is a faint tropical fruit air along with some interesting buttery biscuit and bread notes in the background.

T: The hops seem more hot and spicy with a moderate amount of pine and grass on the palate and the fruitiness in the nose takes a step back to let the bitterness take front stage. The fruit that is there is mostly citrus and the tropical notes are nowhere to be found. The malts are minimal again reminiscent of biscuit and buttery bread.

M: Somewhat thin with a good amount of carbonation and linger.

O: The nose showed me a brew with potential but the complexity failed to translate to the palate and overall brew quality. This brew is slightly above average and lacking in complexity. The West Coast is full of IPA's and this beer falls short of being amongst the greats. (1,097 characters)

On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Clear golden orange with a moderately sized near-white head that leaves the glass spotted with lace.

This does not have a particularly pleasant aroma. It smells of dish soap, medicine, and pine.

The flavor, too, is similar to the aroma, with a high level of bitterness, pine, and a medicinal quality. Not very good.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

I won't be having another. Below average. (451 characters)

Had on tap at Chucks. Review from notes.

A: Pours a hazy orange with a small white head on top, rather fizzy with decent retention. Minimal lacing.

S: Some grapefruit, a bit of peppery spice, orange, and some caramelized malt.

T: Upfront more grapefruit and orange peel which is backed by some hefty caramel malt. A bit of pine on the finish, slightly bitter.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes dry. Slight heat from the alcohol.

O: A decent IIPA with a hefty profile. Above average for style, one I would drink again. (545 characters)

The name is not great..."Rampage", but the beer is.

The smell is of fresh, pungent, bitter hops. Grapefruit, orange, lemon.

Wow...tongue buckles a bit, the lemony fruit bitterness hits hard. Then it backs off with a dry bread like malt and finishes clean.

Medium to full bodied. Excellent carbonation.

Overall this nails IIPA style. Well done Black Diamond. (361 characters)
