Pours a clear light amber color with a quickly fading white head that leaves chunks of lacing.

Smells of citrus and pine hops.

Tastes of the citrus hops with some malt undertones. Hops lead off with citrus and pine notes, but I also pick up a little vegetable-like notes that are not enjoyable. Fairly bitter overall. Hops lead into malt sweetness with some caramel along with toasted bread. Alcohol is well hidden.

Mouthfeel is medium with a slightly crisp amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a decent IIPA, but the vegetable-like hops really hit a note I don't like.

On tap at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and yeast. Taste is much the same with a mild hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is pretty tasty but the yeast flavor is pretty noticeable.

Bomber poured into a pint glass. Orange with a sticky tan head. Aroma is pretty typical. I'm getting tropical citrus with a heavy dose of malt. Flavor starts with toasted malt, progresses toward grapefruit and orange hoppiness, and finishes a bit muddled and malty. Discordant and too malty, but at least it's hoppy too. Squarely 'decent.'

A: Poured a hazy deep orange with good carbonation leaving a nice white cap, some bubbles, good head retention leaves spotty lacing on the glass

S: Citrus, a little bit of tropical fruits in the way of mango, dash of pine apple and underlying caramel

T: Taste followed the nose rather well. Citrus dominates the initial and middle with a subtle juicy tropical fruit element The caramel malt gives it a big backbone and a light booze sting is noticed. Dry and warming in a moderate bitter finish.

M: Medium body. Moderate carbonation.

O: Decent DIPA.

The Beers of California

#41

Bottled Date: None

A: Clear pale golden yellow with a finger and a half white foam after an aggressive pour. Appears to be well carbonated and the foam does a good job of sticking to the glass as it slowly fades.

S: Moderate hop nose dominated by citrus, pine, and grass. There is a faint tropical fruit air along with some interesting buttery biscuit and bread notes in the background.

T: The hops seem more hot and spicy with a moderate amount of pine and grass on the palate and the fruitiness in the nose takes a step back to let the bitterness take front stage. The fruit that is there is mostly citrus and the tropical notes are nowhere to be found. The malts are minimal again reminiscent of biscuit and buttery bread.

M: Somewhat thin with a good amount of carbonation and linger.

O: The nose showed me a brew with potential but the complexity failed to translate to the palate and overall brew quality. This brew is slightly above average and lacking in complexity. The West Coast is full of IPA's and this beer falls short of being amongst the greats.

Clear copper colored beer with an off-white colored head.

Smells strongly hopped with C-Type Hops. STRONG pine and citrus, if nothing else this was dry hopped by someone with balls. Some papaya and pineapple, but this is mostly grapefruit.

Starts out sweet and strong on the grapefruit flavor. Can taste papaya in here as the second strongest flavor. And that is about it. Tastes good just not complex.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall, OK but no medal. Tastes like an Imperial IPA, just not a complex one. Worth it if it is cheaper than $5 a bomber.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #50 (March 2011):

Expected massive head rises to the top of the glass and sticks all the way down; the golden hue is clear and bubbly. Big wafts of hemp seeds, faint cattiness, blond tobacco, grapefruit pulp, green peppercorn, tree sap and mint let us know that the hops are serious here. Malt flavors all line up ... a smooth ale. The hops cover the malt with ripe orange and oily tobacco resin flavors; bitterness is strong, but there is very little bite here, which is more than enough to tilt the beer deep into the Imperial IPA realm. Some tropical fruit and alcohol in the middle and a slow warmth in the hoppy, dry finish. Hops and alcohol bring this beer to where it’s at—a bit of a short story, but a good read.

Appearance: (4.0)

- Pours a rather clear straw yellow and light caramel color with a thick finger of white frothy head which has settled to a thin spotty layer that sticks around and a lace-making ring. Overall the way a beer of this caliber ought to look.

Smell: (3.5)

- Bold bready and caramel malts without an overpowering sweet touch. Resinous pine and super-floral hop notes. Kind of a burnt sulfur aroma and roasty malt touch. Don't know if that was intended. Quite fruity.

Taste: (3.5)

- Quite the fruity brew. Roasted grain, bready and biscuity flavor with some tangerine, grapefruit, and even esters such as raisin. Like a Waldorph's salad without the mayonnaise and nuts. Not bad, and it has a nice bitter grassy touch to balance things out. Zingy and tart.

Mouth Feel: (4.0)

- Nice dry approach in the finish, and well carbonated and drinkable. It has a rather light medium body and isn't so thick and syrupy like many double IPA's might have.... which I don't like. This one however is nice in the feel for sure.

Overall: (3.5)

- It's a solid and unique double IPA. It has flavors that set it apart from others, and at least those flavors are not of those that taint or disfigure a beer. It's bitterness is really nice and takes awhile to really show up for the game. Overall very nice, and a nice price point.

A -- light golden color, pours with very little head (like .25 finger) which it retains well, very nice.

S. -- I believe what I am smelling is Simcoe straight in your nose, in the bottle and just as strong after the pour, piney/citrus the combo I look for in smell and flavor! Very sweet smell.

T/M - Curve ball, Hits with a slightly floral note at first, almost like Fuggles, proceeds into pine and citrus as promised by the smell, ends on an almost balanced hop ending, almost being a good thing, more hops than malt.

Overall: Very nice Imperial, packs a 9% kidney shot to let you know its not playing around, but doesn't taste of the mid to high octane that it is. Price point is right on par, a little over $5 gets you quite a punch in the brain and taste buds. Def. Try it!

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tulip. Thanks to RC0032 for bringing this out.

Appearance: My pour is a mostly transparent caramel color with a modest white cap on top. A little bit of lace and decent retention on the head.

Smell: Caramel and light malts, some prickly and spicy pine, some grassy hops, and a few spicy notes as well.

Taste: This is a fairly mild double IPA. The caramel malt adds some sweetness but does not dominate. The hops have some light lemon and grapefruit notes, a fair amount of grass, and some prickly pine. The finish feels like it is light or faded.

Mouthfeel: The body is full but a little bit drier than I would expect out of a big DIPA. Slightly spicy and prickly from the alcohol with a creamy carbonation.

Overall: This DIPA was all right. Nothing about it disappointed, but the flavors were not that strong or unique.
