Had a 12oz snifter of this on 07APR12. Their menu said it was inspired by a local who enjoyed a shot of Scotch followed by an IPA; hence this IPA made with peated malts...

The snifter looked attractive filled with this new offering. It was a deep chestnut color, a touch hazy, with a creamy, light beige head sitting up top. The foam was smooth and fine, with excellent lacing present. The nose had a distinct smoky character, with a little sweetness mixed in. Body was medium, and it felt fairly smooth going down.

The flavor was indeed peaty, but had an overbearing phenolic aspect to it. A little caramel sweetness came to the front, soon followed by some rindy, pithy hoppiness in the dry finish. An interesting premise, but the presence of a few too many bandaids makes this a one-and-done.

a great idea that isnt quite dialed yet. had it on the cask so i had to try it that way. pours cloudy and flat looking, apple cider color, with a delicate white head. smells like smoke and scotch, really intense peat nose, awesome for a beer. also quite a bit of hops in there as well, a very very interesting aroma. flavor is quite divided, scotch first, hops second. the peat is really strong, moreso than any other beer ive had, but it fades into the bitter hop second half very well. feels stronger than 6.9%. mouthfeel is fine, what i expected from the cask i guess, but this one might be better suited to the normal tap system. i thought the mellow vibe would benefit it, but theres too much body there to be that calm in the feel. overall though i thought this was an excellent beer, creative as anything out there, and on its way to being a real gem. absolutely worth a try.

First had: on tap at American Flatbread, Burlington, VT

Served in a snifter, a completely impenetrable cloud of peach-brown liquid with a small cap of off-white bubbles for a head, not big or dense, but still exhibited good retention and lacing. Some sort of hybridized IPA-Scotch ale, this came off very interesting to me, exhibiting combined characteristics of IPA, wild ale, and even the more hop-biased barleywines I've seen around lately (i.e. Sixpoint Old Krusher). Aroma was hop forward, I'd say, with definite fruit notes, phenols and light pineapple character. Complex taste of citrus zest, big on the grapefruit, pine, pineapple, grass, light crackery malts, completely tolerable medicinal hints, melded with the peated malts that were really more of an afterthought than anything. Crisp and very drying, medium mouthfeel, this was a quite satisfying sipper overall.
