Seems like we'd been driving around visiting brewpubs all damn day. The day's sun's done, we're finally up North. A pop into the hotel for a quick change (read: nap), and then we're Burlington bound for mischief. I'm sure we can find something to do, somewhere to go. Hell, there's 3 brewpubs in a 2 block radius, it's like I'm being called out...
Upon entering, you're greeted by banners describing the 5 facets of food (Hunger, Nature, Flavor, Nourish, Heal). Very enlightening. 7 tables in the front nook below the panel windows looking out towards the park, and a 12 seat "L" shaped bar with a large mirror backed wood unit beyond that. An adjacent bar counter sits in the middle of the room. On the other side of it lies a handful of long tables, and to the rear, an unused brick hearth in the corner (a Jazz quintet was playing in front of it the next night). Big brick walls, pressed tin ceiling, duct work, drop lighting over the bar & tables (Vice President Zwerver says, "They've got the coolest lighting fixtures"), big ol' sunflowers in the vase on the counter, colored pieces of cloth strung on a line overhead with statements about this and that written on them, De Dolle posters on the back wall (Stille Nacht, Ara Bier, & the uncanny Randy likeness OerBier), and the tap selections printed on a large blackboard on the wall to the right of the bar.
A large brick archway leads you into the side dining room, a space with about a dozen and a half tables & booths. The walls carry large food themed tapestries (Organic Garlic, Tomatoes, Extra Virgin Olive Oil). A large brick hearth holds the rear corner before the kitchen area.
Dave Broderick was good enough, no... great enough, to buy us a couple of flatbread pizzas, one all veggied out for Peggy & Baker, and the other for us carnivores. The pepperoni & pepper pie kicked ass, seriously, and I'm a New Haven pizza junkie, so if I'm saying it, you know it's on the up and up. And Peggy claims, "They have the best salads".
The beer scene here is maddening. 18 taps (6 house brews and a dozen guest taps), 4 hand pumps, and a mean bottle collection. Starting with the house beers, Paul's Pils was sublime, the Extra Stout smooth & roasty, the Session Brown Ale well sessionable, the TLA IPA wonderfully hoppy, and I don't think I got to the Summer Bock and Villier's ESB). The dozen guest taps were a great mix of local (Magic Hat Dunkel, McNeill's Impy, Switchback Unfiltered Ale, Trout River Rainbow Ale, Wolaver Wit, Long Trail Double Bag), regional (Smutty IPA, Allagash Grand Cru, Harpoon IPA), and imports (Saison DuPont, Salopian Entire Butt Porter, Mahr's Reserve). The 4 hand pumps (Adnams Tally Ho Barleywine, Otter Creek Alpine Ale, Rock Art Ridge Runner, Shed Mountain Ale).
Food was outstanding (Woofed a whole lot of flatbread pizza the next day at the VT Brewer's Fest, where they set up shop with a giant hearth out there. It was on a platform, bricked and then muddied up, the thing looked like a giant hornets nest but damn if it didn't crank out some serious pizza). House beers were damn good and the guest taps are tempting, although you really want to run with the house beers. Paul Sayler is a wonderful host, and has got himself a great little place up there.

The last stop in a mini beer tour of Burlington.... Zero Gravity/American Flatbread is the quintessential Vermont joint. Lots of wood and brick, a nice cozy interior (I bet it is great in the winter while the snow falls outside), an exposed brick oven and lists of local purveyors and farms around the wall. They take the local thing serious in this state!

We sat at the bar, which was surprisingly busy at this time at night (almost 11:30pm, kinda late for Vermont). 13 house beers plus a cask listed on the chalkboard, with a bit of everything and lots of creativity.

I loved the Gruit and Ale Communication DIPA but did not enjoy the Belgian-style dubbel. The Peated IPA would have been nice but it had just kicked. Also a saison, pilsner, Helles bock, Gruit on cask... they are not your average brewpub!

They don't offer beer flights or sizable samples but they do give small free samples. Prices are reasonable at $5.00 per glass and $3.00 per half-glass, and service is friendly and efficient.

We chatted with a local couple and also with the bartender, who happened to work at Prohibition Pig in Waterbury too. I can't wait to visit again and try the famous flatbreads! Oh- don't miss the beautiful artistic tap handles...

Been here 2 times over the past 2 years. Its a must visit location if you find yourself in the Northern Vermont, Burlington area. 2 levels with the bar to the right as you enter on the upper level, which includes several tables. Lower level/main dining area to the left, with many more tables and the pizza oven/hearth. Well chosen and ever changing beer list, including their own creations and multiple high quality guest brews. Artisinal and local ingrediants in their truly yummy, craft, thin crust, hearth oven cooked pizzas. Casual and comfortable athmosphere. Friendly and professional staff. Interesting and eclectic crowd. Put it all together and...I love this place....

The beer is not bad, decent on the zero gravity house brand. The attrction tonight was a special Magic Hat night, yet only one special Magic Hat was on, the Chaotic Chemistry. Taps are good and so that alone attracts a more mature portion of the crowd. Large bar area and good sized restaurant. Good it was open, as it was closed for reno or whatever on my previous trip here two years ago. Good experienced waitstaff who even knew a bit about the beers, but you needed to be around the bar to get it. Not much selection in food but it was very good. Reasonable friendly to meet other patrons.

Stopped in here for dinner after a long hike from Burlington out to Hill Farmstead and back. Yeesh, do Vermont drivers ever drive slowly...

Anyway, we took a cab into town and arrived here just before the mad dinner rush. Warm and welcoming inside (though somebody should invest in some matting in the entrance area; the one lone mat was not nearly up to the task on a wet evening with snow on the ground), we were seated at a table in the smaller right hand side of the dining room. Service was quick and friendly; we had a badly needed beer in our hands in less than five minutes. The selection of Zero Gravity beers was very nice. The TLA IPA was my highlight.

Food was good. The flatbreads were more pizzas in my mind. Like Mellow Mushroom locations we have been to, the crust is too bready and thick for my liking, despite being cooked in a wood fired oven. Toppings were fresh, plentiful and tasty.

I would certainly go back, though next time I would choose to eat at the Farm House.

This was the last stop on our Burlington brewpub tour last weekend. We stopped in here for a drink after dinner at VT Pub & Brewery, which is practically right across the street. Walked in, and you gotta love that smell of freshly baking pizza. It's fun to watch the guy in the back operate the hearth. The bar has a very modern and cool look to it. Not a whole lot of standing room though. Service was good. They had about 10 house beers on tap, with 7 or so guest taps also. I tried the Belgian Pail Ale (ok) and my wife had the Belgian Dubbel (very good). It started to get a bit crowded as it was a Saturday night and the evening beer fest session was just getting out, so we decided to stay just for one. After staring at the pizza for a while as we savored those tasty beers, we decided that this was one place that we should have dinner at sometime in the future.

My wife and I did a quick, one-day visit to Burlington in mid June which included visits to all three brewpubs in the downtown Burlington area - Vermont Pub, American Flatbread, and Three Needs (listed in rank order from best to very good). They're all within walking distance to each other and a block off the main pedestrian shopping area. These three visits put me at 195 breweries/brewpubs visited.

It happened to be the week of the Burlington Jazz festival and our stop at American Flatbread for dinner included a really nice electronic funk jazz band laying down a solid groove just off the bar near the entry. For some, this would have been too loud and too crowded. For me it was great.

We sat at the bar and I enjoyed three house beers - IPA, Grisette, and what I believe was an India Pale Lager. All three were well done, but I'm giving a lower score to selection because there weren't that many house beers on draft. The flip side to this is they did have a fine guest draft list including Allagash Confluence wild ale and some Dogfish offerings. You really can't go wrong with their quality beers and great pizza.

An amazing restaurant in Burlington, VT. This place is ALWAYS busy. Book at least an hour in advance if you're planning on a table. And if you see a bar seat, grab it while you can. [Beer selection is beyond reproach; brews from all over the world, and a good draught selection. Everything from Allagash to Zatec, and not a Budweiser or Coors to offend the eye. ]

*Edit: from my most recent visit (2012), it seems that they no longer tap anything other than house beers (Zero Grav), which I really don't mind. I guess they've upped their production enough to be self-sustaining, though I must say, I miss the selection they once had. Now, I don't want to brag and say something like "my palate has gotten more sophisticated," but the quality of the beer here really seems to have dropped lately. I really did enjoy these beers a lot more when I first starting coming here. I don't know if they changed brewers or what, but the beers have all become sort of...mediocre at best. Also available: local meads and ciders.

Aside from salads, and a soup and dessert du jour, the only food available is homemade flatbread...and it's really really good. (Also makes a good snack for me for the long drive home to PA.) Good semi-rustic/semi-contemporary atmosphere with good and friendly service (considering how busy it is). Prices are decent, and the option to get half pours gives you the opportunity to sample many different brews. Always worth a stop while in town!

After a relaxed (and lengthy) lunch at the Vermont Pub & Brewery (on 19APR08), Alewife and I trekked the long 75 or so yards across the street to the Burlington Hearth of American Flatbread.

The brewpub is in the first floor of a non-descript multi-story building, with the Hearth portion being a drab, brown color, with two sets of tall, narrow windows on each side of the central entrance. Once inside, after a short hallway, you find the bar on the right, rear side of the bright place, about 1/2 of the length of the building. It is long and J-shaped, made of solid, light wood, with intricately carved pillars behind the bar set astride shelves of bier glasses and dozens of bier taps. To the front right of this room are a half dozen or so tables near the window. In the rear of the right side of the building are 2 long, Oktoberfest-style tables seating about 16-18 each. The entire place is brick, top-to-bottom, with wooden ceilings having ductwork hanging from it. A large brick archway leads you from right side to left of the business, where there's a brick hearth in the far left, rear corner for pizzas. This side of the building has about 2 dozen 4-seater tables with red and white checkerboard tablecloths, plus 4-6 booths along the inner wall. A great looking place, with an extremely comfy feel. A hallway in the rear of the right side leads to restrooms and the brewing coppers.

Sitting at the bar, we had solid, friendly service from our 'tender. On tap were 8 house-brewed biers, topped by 2 super, very tasty IPAs (Sim City and Capt Rons). In addition, AFB had a bottle list which looked to be 100-plus strong.

We got there in mid-afternoon, before food came on line, so it was not too crowded. Shortly thereafter, the throngs arrived for food. We didn't partake, but the menu looked enticing. General thoughts of the Hearth? Highly recommended. Highly.

Another nice brewpub/beer bar/pizza joint place in Burlington. This one has the best beer selection in town, methinks. The brews crafted here are excellent. Pauls Pils is insanely good and reminded me of moonlights, no seriously. The other brews seemed solid as well. The guest draft selection is nice with a good selection of locals and imports (a lot of rarer German tap handles are here...). Quality of the brews and my Salad was good, as was the service, but the pizzas here are insanely expensive. One size only, and no slices, and like $20 for a pie! They looked so good, but I had to stick with more frugal pizza options like Manhattan and Mr. Mikes! Still, very recommended when you are in B-town!

Decor wise--its all brick and family oriented first and foremost--quite busy most of the time also.

This place is close to the center of the action (VPB) but its so much mellower. Granted, it has a much stronger restaurant versus brewpub feel but these beers are very good. Might even be that the best gruit I have ever tried was the Summer gruit from this place. I could never even consider having more than 1 gruit until I had the gruit here. I had 3 in no time at all and they did seem to go well with the food items.

They have all organic salads and the pizza is absolutely some of the best you will ever find. How about sulfate free peperoni? Tastes more like ham or prosciutto than your standard peperoni but boy is it good. I wish I could order that stuff online. I did try a few other styles of beer that they offerered--they were quite good but not quite worthy of the praise that the Summer gruit gets.

Prices were fair enough and service was good also. I cant recommend this place enough--especially for food but the beers are not to be under-appreciated either.

Came here yesterday for lunch after checking out of the Hampton Inn.

Walking in, we're greeted by a large coat rack on the left and a long bar on the right wall. A couple of booths face the window and as we walk in the reception area, i notice a fireplace with some chairs and a large table on the opposite side. We go to the restaurant side of the place. I'm struck by the open concept of the place and the high ceilings. Mostly red brick walls. The place feels warm, cozy and inviting. In the main seating area where we were seated, we have an open view to the making and baking of the pizzas. My wife brought our daughter to look at the huge furnace where they cook the pizza. Also, as i walked to the washroom (the stall had a saloon-style door which was cool), you get a glimpse of their brewing room which was nice.

The beer list is pretty impressive. They have approx. 11 taps plus a few casks devoted to the Zero Gravity beer, 6 taps of U.S. micros and 1 tap of St-Feuillien Noel. Very long list of bottles (in alphabetical order, nice!) which includes pretty much all that you can find at the Beverage Warehouse. Prices ranged from inexpensive to reasonable. The beer list on their website is up to date because it's exactly what we found at the pub. I had a glass of their Belgian single on cask which was alright and my wife had a half-glass of Greg, a scottish-style ale which was really good.

The pizza was pretty good. We had the Medicine Wheel, a cheese and herb pizza that was pretty good. I found the prices very reasonable considering the quality of the ingredients that they use.

Overall, a very positive experience and one that i will be repeating whenever we come to Burlington. Definitely my new favorite place to eat.

Visited with a couple of local friends. Hit the place up for the start of the 5 day long cask festival around Mondial time.

Cool place with a nice bar and a wide open seating area. Lots of wooden decor and of course the wood fired oven begging for another pie to be placed in.

Our tender was quick and pleasant. We had obtained prime seats at the bar som beers we not empty for long before a fill was produced.

With multiple taps...from both house and guest breweries AND 5 gravity beers pouring how could I be longing?

I know that this is THE PLACE for pizza but we were here to drink and grab food elsewhere.

A really nice locale that will most certianly be revisited!

If you read my review for Vermont Pub & Brewery, then you already know that American Flatbread is the obvious next stop. Just a few steps brings you to the front door of this very nice establishment, in reality a pizzeria that serves eight house beers and ten guest beers, many being Vermont craft brews. They also have an impressive selection of international beers in bottles.

Once inside this interesting looking building is a small bar on the right, beyond which is an old-fashioned wood stove (the smell of burning wood permeates the place), and dining room to the left; pass through the brick archway to another dining room.

Having recently lunched at Vermont Pub & Brewery, I missed the chance to sample the very tempting and tantalizing (Is there a difference?) pizza; however, I was tempted and tantalized by the excellent beers served efficiently for $3.75 a pint. My choices were the T.L.A. American IPA and an incredible Farmhouse Ale Saisson.

American Flatbread should be part of any Burlington (or Vermont) pubcrawl. There is another location in Middlebury, but the hours are weird so check ahead.

Updated 11/17/09: Just returned from a vacation in Vermont where I had another opportunity (or opportunities - I went twice) to stop by; nothing has changed; it is a great place to visit, drink great beer and dine on delicious flatbread pizza. If one had to choose one place in Burlington, this is it.

When I made it to Burlington it was really rainy and I was getting tired fast so I decided to head down to American Flatbread, have a few beers, and get some flatbread to go. I had a devil of a time trying to find this place in the rain but I finally found it and scored a seat at the bar. Very nice space with tons of people milling around waiting for their tables to be ready. I got served quickly and my servers were nice and kept my glass full. Quality was very high all around. My beers were good and my flatbread was great and made with high quality ingredients.

The selection was pretty good. Tons of different beers plus their IPA on cask with some extra hops added. Most tasted pretty good, I liked the stout best. I got a half and half flatbread to go, half New Vermont Sausage and half Dancing Heart. I loved the Sausage half, I could not stop eating it, the other half was good but I wish I would have went with one of the other toppings, like the pepperoni and peppers, as they smelled amazing. Overall a really nice place to stop and have some beers and a pie. I will definitely return next time I am in Burlington.

Ate lunch here and had a few beers. We sat in the outdoor seating since it was nice, although the ground wasn't very level and I was worried my beers were going to slide off the table.

Good selection of beer styles available, I had a glass of the Black IPA and the Export Stout. Both very tasty. The food menu is made up of flatbread pizzas which feature a lot of local ingredients. We had ours half red onion and buffalo chicken and half Sun dried tomato and sausage, and it was excellent.

The only downside was that the service was below average. Our waitress disapeared for long stretches when we actually needed refills, and both the plates and my wife's coffee cup had not been washed well at all.

The flatbread is very good, though if you don't want pizza you aren't going to have much else to choose from. Prices are reasonable and the beer is good. Nice selection of house beers and while they don't offer flights they do serve half pints if you want to try a few different things. The lagers were actually the standouts of what we had with the hoppy beers being good but not great.

A really interesting place. Stopped by for some late night food after the VBF. One of the best pizzas I have ever had. As is typical for Burlington attention was paid to the ingredients to ensure the best quality.

The beer list was very extensive, almost too extensive. There was very little in terms of interesting beer styles form my point of view, which was odd given the vast number of offerings. I had a saison that was definitely above average.

Service was friendly and prompt on a fairly busy Friday night. Would return for the pizza alone.

Traffic at the border was light, so we arrived early enough in Burlington to have lunch at American Flatbread, a brewpub highly recommended by locals and tourists alike.

This location is split in two sections, a bar section as you walk in and a restaurant setting to the left, where we were seated. Huge brick/clay oven, thank goodness the AC was blasting at full force because we would have melted.

Very impressive Beer list, 4-5 brewed on premises and plenty of guest taps, including McNeil’s Imperial Stout, Adnams Barleywine on cask, Saison Dupont and a few others. Excellent bottle list that was perhaps a little pricey but with a few gems that would have been worth the price. I stuck with the pub’s own offerings, the IPA and the Pilsner which were very nice, fresh and well made.

We ordered a few pizzas that were excellent, and in perspective weren’t too expensive, considering the amount we ate. A few Quebec buddies went the same day we did, and ordered one pizza each without knowing that you can feed between 2-3 people with those monsters. They gladly do substitutions for free, and you can get half/half pizzas to be able to try more varieties. The veggie daily special and sausage pizzas were our favorites.

Service was quite friendly, everything was clean, and I agree that this spot is the best I’ve seen in town, beating the pub & brewery down the street easily. I will be back.

Although I have been to Burlington a half dozen times and hit up most of the spots...American Flatbread did not happen until this past weekend.
The atmosphere on Sunday at lunch time was alive and happening. To get a table, you had to wait a bit, but I snuck right into an open seat at the bar. Some of them were regulars and very friendly. The house beers were pretty good and they had a nice selection of guest beers too, including a lot of VT selections. For food, I decided to go for the namesake, flatbread pizza, which was very nice, I went for the sausage. Prices are a little inflated compared to other casual establishments in VT, but was worth checking out.

Really enjoyed stopping in here on a quiet fall sunday afternoon for a few rounds. An excellent beer and food menu which I was only able to merely graze on my short visit. I was here during the lull between lunch and dinner so the kitchen was closed and I ate at the Vermont Pub and Brewery instead. I've heard great things about the flatbread pizzas though!

As I said it was very quiet with maybe 10 other folks in the place having a round. The bartender was an extremely soft-spoken young man who made no chit chat and just went about his business but certainly not in an unfriendly way. He seemed unusually shy for a bartender though!

It's a lovely room to be in and a nice bar to sit at. I had the milk stout on cask which was excellent and a seasonal made with butternut squash (!) called appropriately enough "Sasquash." Both beers were very nicely done. I think they were 4 bucks each too, IIRC. Nice price.

I will definitely return when I'm in the area again. A classy place with beer of obvious quality. A number of bottles from other brewers were on offer and carefully chosen.
