12 ounce standard brown bottle. Notched best-before May 2008. Attractive, if simple label. The brewery's motto is a little silly ("The Dark Beer Specialist").
Pours slightly transparent dark brown. A quarter-inch of tan head quickly disappears, leaving sparse lace. Smells strongly lactic, with cross-currents of burnt coffee and chocolate malt. The flavor displays better balance. Deep-roasted coffee and burnt toast dominate. Becomes a bit sweeter, more caramelized in the center. Finishes with a touch of bitter pine hop. The beer feels light in the mouth. Not especially rich and with far too much carbonation. Not bad., but won't set the world on fire.
