Appearance: Pours dark, with a caramel head, which doesn't stick around much, nor does it leave much lacing. Sunlight will pass through the glass, resonating with a deep red glow. Gorgeous when poured in the light of the setting sun. (Overly poetic? Maybe, but the color really is fantastic...not just black.)
Smell: Slightly metallic, but mostly roasty, rich coffee. No hops, not much malt in the nose.
Taste: Dark coffee, significant lingering sweetness, reminiscent of chocolate cupcakes, but blessedly not cloying. Excellent paired with chocolate cake. Worth savoring. A slight metallic note sticks around through the finish, marring what would otherwise be a perfect example of the style.
Mouthfeel: With a milk stout, you expect a thick, creamy mouthfeel, and this beer delivers. I've had more creamy milk or cream stouts, but this one still is quite excellent.
Overall: I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the beers in North Carolina, and this one did not disappoint. Eager to try the other beers from this brewery. A sweet, but not at all syrupy stout, excellent for your after dinner dessert. When tasting this excellent example of a cream/milk stout, you don't get the sense that the brewer used cheap tricks to obtain the flavors and results. An excellent example of the style.

Poured a nearly black with a short-lived light tan head. No lacing is left. The aroma is mild but does have nice deep roasted malt notes with a little earthiness. The taste is just straightforward deep roasted malt with just a little sweetness from the lactose. It has a decent weight to the body and a silky feel and finish. It's another very good dark beer from this brewery.
