I always try to pick up NC brews while in the state of NC and it seems Duck-Rabbit is always one of the ones I grab.

12 oz brown bottle with typical Duck-Rabbit style red/black/white labeling with milk stout printed toward the bottom of the label as well as "the dark beer specialist". I really enjoy the DR labels. Poured this into a standard pint glass.

A - black colored and basically opaque. A massive tan head forms from the pour and is more of a latte color. Head is pretty large and has some staying power but appears to be a more thin massive than a thick fluffy massive. Decent stick to the glass. Tasty looking brew for sure.

S - whipped cream and chocolate with a faint hint of coffee. Roasted malts creep through over the cream like aroma. A small whiff of bittersweet dark chocolate. Milk sugar sweetness and sugary sweet malts offer a very nice aroma.

T - a sweeter dark chocolate with a ton of sweet milk chocolate. The roasted malt provide enough counter balance not to allow the sweetness to take full control. Lactose sugars and coffee expresso notes in the background. Bittersweet finish. Very nice take on the milk stout flavor. I find most too sweet and sugary while this has enough character not to be one sided.

M - lighter medium body with a good creamy texture despite its somewhat thinner 5.7% body. Smooth feel and easy in the mouth. One of the few milk stouts I have been able to finish without getting too rich in the mouth. But still I couldn't imagine drinking more than 1 with even the rich mouthfeel this stout offers. A real dessert brew for me. Short and sweet. I bet about anyone would enjoy the flavors this stout has to offer.

O - while I'm not going to claim Duck-Rabbit are indeed the specialists of dark beer as this is the first stout I've had from them, I will however lay claim that this is one of the best crafted milk/sweet stouts america or anywhere else for that matter has to offer in terms of keeping it below 6% abv. While I've enjoyed many bigger milk stouts better than the Duck-Rabbit I can't quite get over how well made it really is. Nearly all the milk/sweet stouts I've had have had top shelf flavors but I just couldn't finish them due to the intense sweetness, but these guys somehow have created one all the while keeping the ridiculous sweetness and rich flavors but balancing it just enough to get me through the entire 12 oz bottle. Very good milk stout and worth the try for stout lovers and rich milky sweet stout lovers in general.

Deep brown hue and is only letting a bit of light through when held up to light. A quarter inch of tightly woven khaki colored head. Brussels lacing. Aroma of cocoa powder and lactose greets my nose. The body is silky smooth and creamy. I get cocoa and lactose quickly fading away when I take a taste.

Very carbonated. Poured with a very tall tan head. A lot of carbonation which you can tell based on the pop of the bottle cap. The beer itself is dark brown. Smells of roasted malts, slight coffee and chocolate. Nutty and bready too. The taste is of dark, roasted malts as well as chocolate and espresso. It's a medium bodied brew that's smooth and sticky. Very solid beer here.
