The Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout is a traditional full-bodied stout brewed with lactose (milk sugar). Because lactose is unfermentable by brewer's yeast, it remains in the beer. The subtle sweetness and fullness of flavor imparted by this sugar balances the sharpness of the highly roasted grains that give this delicious beer its black color. All year long, Milk Stout is our number one selling beer!

Thanks Bill and Suzy for bringing this up. It was one I have been wanting to try. This beer is the best I have had of the style. Love the smokiness. I look forward to trying again on a future trip to NC.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass.
The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. There was some light stringy lacing running all around.
The smell had a deep luscious sweet milk chocolate with subtle roasty coffee beans gracing the middle of the aroma.
The taste pretty much copied the smell nicely with a lead gentle roasty to sweet aftertaste sliding into the finish.
The mouthfeel was about a light to medium in body with sweet creamy sessionability about it. Carbonation runs nicely.
Overall, I'd say this was a pretty well done milk/sweet stout that I would have again if available.

Interesting to note that I saw a few reviews of this beer noting "over carbonation." I don't think I've ever witnessed this previously until now; My pour of D-R Milk stout was basically 2 gigantic glasses of foam! It took quite awhile for the initial pour to subside before I could actually taste any liquid. (Interesting to also note that others are stating that their pour's were completely flat wrt carbo; Tough to figure that!)

A dark brownish black, once the overflow of beige foam subsides. The nose is roast, coffee, maybe some dried fruit of some kind. Taste is similarly coffee-esque, with some sweetness that's accentuated by some type of "extract" flavor--i.e. rum, vanilla butternut, etc--near the finish, along with some roasty bitterness. Needless to say, this was a totally unexpected experience with the foam, which sounds like others have experienced as well. Will try another if /when one should present.

This is one of my favorites now, we have it on draft in a local market often and it sells out quickly. It is such a really well balanced stout. very smooth creamy mouth feel, just right carbonation, not too foamy, a little lacing. A slight taste similar to slightly burnt rye toast, carmel, chocolate, just enough hop to keep it from being too sweet. I always now am happy when I see it on tap here!!

With a brown-to-black color, it boasts a sweet yet roasty flavor with a coffee zing. Very oddly balanced combined with a low-profile, but high carbonation bite. It does have a pretty good mouthfeel, but it’s one-dimensional overall.

The beer pours out into a Duvel glass a dark brown, almost black, color with a 3/8" khaki head the soon recedes to an irregular patch of foam with a bit of thickness over the nucleation point. Sipping produces a couple of arches of lacing and lots of small patches some of which slide back the liquid and some of which remain on the glass.

The aromas include some coffee, dark toffee and toasted malt.

As expected from the nose the flavors include the toasted malt, dark toffee, a bit of coffee and the slight sweetness from the lactose.

The mouth feel is on the full side of medium bodied and lightly crisp with the persistent carbonation. The finish begins as the other flavors fade revealing a touch of hop bitterness and some dryness as the sweetness fades away, leaving the palate ready for another ship.

On the whole this seems a well done milk stout that I could easily have more of, both tonight and in the future. At the moment its fairly high on my list of milk stouts to have again.

From the 12 oz bottle into a shaped pint glass. Pours black with a tan head that explodes up and stays for quite some time, decent lacing. Light on the aroma, roasted malts and hints of soy sauce. Potent flavor, big roast wallop and chocolate followed by that lactose sweetness. Velvety feel and medium bodied. A tasty milk stout.

I like a good stout and this one is very pleasing for a milk stout. The color is there. The lactose sweetness is there and all the other complex stout favors just stand up and say hi. Very balanced. Would buy again.

EBD 6/16. Pours black as a starless night. World class head volume, lacing and retention.

Outstanding nose of roast, milk chocolate, caramel and sweet lactose.

A disappointing heavy light body that is smooth in texture. Superb carbonation with a solid effervescent middle and a nice prickly burst in the finish.

The good flavor profile lacks intensity and complexity. It is well balanced. Mild roast flavor over a semi-sweet base. Hints of chocolate arrive in the middle along with a mild bitterness, predominately from the roast. The finish is a slow fade of previous flavors.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark black with very little head. Some lacing. The aroma is roasty with dark chocolate, lactose, and toasted coffee. The taste is semi sweet with some espresso, roasted malts, and bitter dark chocolate. Somewhat of an earthy finish with some more sweetness coming out. Roasty aftertaste with the bitter dark chocolate again. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side. Overall, pretty good Milk Stout I'd look for again.

Bottle purchased at Bottlebox in Norfolk, VA.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a half inch head, and basically no lacing.

Smells like roasted malt, a little bit of vanilla and lactose, and some slight roasty coffee.

This is a really solid milk stout that I'm glad I got to try. It's got a deep and long lasting dark roasted malt flavor, some nice not too sweet creamy lactose flavor. There's some sweet and roasty coffee flavors as well, too.

This is medium bodied, fairly creamy and rich, with a moderate to slightly low level of carbonation.

A really nice straightforward milk stout here.

My girlfriend got me a six pack of a variety of esteemed stouts. This one wins. I think I'm going to buy a few kegs and make myself a duck rabbit milk stout bath.

My 'go to' beer for almost 2 years. Sweet and bitter. Dark and a little smokey. Black. Some bad experiences with over-carbonation but generally consistent. Great to drink year-round.

Not sure its thick enough or velvet like in the mouth for my taste. Just not quite rich enough. More roasted warmth to round it out a bit. Maybe a longer boil.

Not exactly what I was expecting picking up a stout to enjoy tonight. Gave this a respectably hard pour but got virtually no head unfortunately. What head there was had a nice brown color like you would expect. Pours a deep black color. Smell is nice - sweet with a bit of coffee. It does have a surprising amount of carbonation which adds a bit of bite. Flavors aren't bad, but it is noticeably sweet, with a bitterness that follows later on and finishes dry. I would not pick this up if you are expecting a more traditional stout like Guinness. For a milk stout, I would recommend Nitro Milk Stout instead of this.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with tall, creamy, beige head and nice lacing. Aroma is of toasted malt, dark fruit and coffee. Body is medium and smooth. Taste is of toasted malt, coffee, caramel, dark fruit and hint of hops. Finish is medium, unremarkable. Average brew.

Pours black with a thick caramel colored head. The head is like a thick shake and stays on as you drink. Nose is a hint of chocolate milk. Tastes of chocolate malt followed by a slight sourness like in sourdough bread. Thinner feel than it looks. I thought this would be chewy but it is not. Another surprise for me is that it was very carbonated. Interesting, after several sips, the nose turns to a musty smell. Guess I am not a big fan of milk stouts.

L: Very dark, thin head leaves quickly

S: Roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, caramel

T/F: Get the roasted malt and chocolate, some caramel and vanilla, slight coffee. Smooth feel, medium body, no carbonation.

O: Was a decent beer, could buy it if the local craft store is closed and i had to scoop something from the grocery store that wasn't PBR or a pale ale. Not something id go out of my way for but i would definitely have again.

Delicious milk stout. The lower ABV makes it an easier to drink stout that emphasizes the coffee flavors and leaves a brilliant aftertaste that lingers for a long time after. One of my new favorite beers.

Thoroughly enjoyed from the 12 oz bottle in a pint glass from a good doctor of Psychology friend of mine from college. Thanks Chris! Pours a firm black with brownish red highlights, and a moderate head of light tan foam that dissipates to a thin layer and firm ring with light lacing. Nose of sweet lactose sugars, roasted coffee, and dark chocolate. Flavors surpass the nose with a nice milk flavor awash over layers of chocolate on all sides. a light coffee bitterness comes through on the back to round this out with minimal bittering hops. Creamy smooth mouth feel, very British, with moderate carbonation and a light chocolate and lactose aftertaste that is coating without being overly cloying. SOLID!

A great representation of the style and a first from this brewer!

I love milk stouts ever since I gave them a try for curiosities sake. It was, at first, the brewer who drew me to the beer (Wittgenstein's infamous duck-rabbit). Nonetheless, the flavour struck me as rather soothing for a beer. It is dark and a tad-bit heavy (though not too much).

12 ounce bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a pretty, completely opaque, pitch-black color, with an eighth of a finger of a caramel-colored head that quickly dissolved away into a halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass.

Aroma: Very aromatic with strong notes of roasted malt, dark bread, dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla and some coffee.

Taste: Very good! Lots of roasted malt up front, imparting flavors of freshly baked dark bread, followed by some bitterness of dark chocolate and caramel-like sweetness, accented with some vanilla and a slight hint of coffee. Quite good!

Mouthfeel: Very smooth and creamy. No carbonation what-so-ever. With an ABV of 5.7%, there is no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is a really good milk stout. I really like the flavors of dark chocolate, vanilla and malt that this beer imparts. Really good.

Look: Pours bitch black with about one finger of head.

Smell: Vanilla chocolate blend. Has a hint of roasted peanuts.

Taste: Has a roasted peanut flavor, along with chocolate.

Feel: Medium bodied and smooth

Overall: Pretty good Milk Stout. It's a bit different from most milk/sweet stouts I've had before. Definitely worth a try.

First time having a milk stout, wasn't too sure what to expect

Poured dark brown with fair amount of tan foamy head resolving to a faint lacing. Minimal effervescence.
Smells oddly smokey, burnt, vague sourdough like aroma, some carob/cocoa
Taste sweet malty with middle flavor of sourness akin to milk that's just starting to sour.
Mouthfeel light to medium bodies, a little more carbonation than your standard stout. Mild sourness to finish.
Overall, not a bad introduction to the style though I think I prefer other stout varieties (coffee, RIS etc)
