Poured from a twist-top 64oz Alpine growler into Schlafly tulip. Fresh from the Piggly Wiggly growler station in Myrtle Beach SC. Gotta love (some) SC beer laws and scratch your head at California's. Thanks beerbyrd!

A - Jet black with a slight ruby red on the edges. Mocha head leaves decent lacing.

S - Roast, dried cherries, prunes, a little licorice. A faint baker's chocolate.

T - Roast primarily, then the dried cherries and prunes. Licorice is prominent on the back of the tongue, also a very faint cocoa. Finishes dry with a little acidic note.

M - The light side of a heavy mouthfeel, although finishes a bit watery (go figure). Low carbonation.

O - This beer is a little strange for me. I really don't like the flavor combos here. I'm not a big roast guy and the licorice definitely doesn't go with the roast. I have had this in bottles and felt the same way. This was sent on a whim. Next time, I will ask him what he is sending but he ships;-)

Poured on-tap at the brewery and served in a nonic pint, the beer is jet black, with mahogany highlights, and a halo of white head. Nose of bourbon, molasses, smoke, bittersweet chocolate, and old-world fruit highlights of plum and date. Flavors of roast and bittersweet chocolate forward, with rich molasses and fig in the backbone, hints of smoke highlights, and a bittersweet coffee and chocolate linger. Smooth, robust, but still crisp and dry in the finish, with a roasted, rich, and bitter aftertaste, and a fruit and chocolate linger. Fantastic!

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a borderline pitch black color. The head is two fingers high and tan in shade. Retention is good, but not amazing. Huge amounts of lacing are left on the glass - this is an aesthetically pleasing beer.

S: Very roasty. What surprises me is the less-than-insignificant presence of lactose: I have to say, it really adds to this beer. It's also very coffee-esque, as well, with just the faintest hints of dark fruits. Maybe even something suggesting tobacco, also? The complexity on the aroma is very nice in general.

T: At first, the roast is carried onto the palate strongly, building more coffee and cream flavors near the midtaste. The finish is very leathery, with a subtle tartness betraying good attenuation (read: it's not sugary sweet). More and more dark fruits gradually build up on the flavor profile, subsuming the leathery/boozy notes with more and more tartness. At first, I didn't think this was really complex, but it's developing additional notes of chocolate, tobacco, and even mint. All told, this one is really damn good.

M: Here's where I'm let down: this is rather thin on the palate, and lacking in creaminess. Carbonation is on the low side, expected from the style. However, it's very dry - and considering how well integrated the alcohol is into every facet of the flavor and feel, one could easily be fooled into thinking this is around 7%. It's not as rich as I want a RIS to be, but it's damn drinkable.

O: Quite impressive, mouthfeel aside. If this had the body of, say, Stone IRS, this could have been a bona-fide giant killer. As it stands right now, this is a really solid local gem, one that's well worth sampling.

Poured into a Cigar City snifter. Deep black with a tan head that has hints of red. Nice roasty aroma. Underlying note of burnt sugar in the nose as well.

Semi-viscous pour. Roasted malts and rich chocolate notes dominate. Burnt caramel and burnt caramel mingle with the heaviness of the roasted malts. Not too sweet, which is a trait I like in a heavy stout. Body is medium-full. A bit of chew and cream in the mouthfeel; very pleasant on the palate. Sticky and rich. A hint of dried blueberries leads up to the finish. Finishes with a heavy dark chocolate note that dries down nicely. Carbonation is appropriate.

Duck Rabbit: the dark beer specialist -- of course I am buying their RIS. A very solid and enjoyable imperial stout with a decadent mouthfeel. This would "tear up from tha flo' up" a homemade french vanilla ice cream. Or great on its own for a beer dessert.

After having the opportunity to sample several Duck Rabbit selections, I've decided I need to make a trip to Farmville, NC. I live in Southeast Virginia, so it is going to happen. I think they have positioned themselves as a good brewery and might be flying under the radar to some extent.
