12 oz. bottle poured into a Duvel Tulip Style glass. Beer comes out dark brown, like the color of dark roasted coffee when it's first brewed, before any other ingredients added. That's the best way to describe the color, but the texture looks thicker. Tan colored head about a half a finger thick sticks around a short time to leave a skimming and then just a small ring around the edges, not much lacing.
Smell is freaking wonderful, especially for the style. I feel like too many baltic porters that are tried to have huge flavors and aromas end up smelling like a fire that was just put out, not the case this time. Huge, super roasty, with aromas like chocolate syrup, dark/strong coffee, and molasses. In addition to these are also some aromas of nuttiness and even some natural dehydrated fruits. If I didn't already know the style I'd say maybe this was a Russian Imperial Stout, and I'm not saying that cause I had one earlier tonight. Very complex, but very good.
Taste is equally as outstanding, again it's super roasty. The smell made me think it was going to taste a little sweeter than it was, but it's still really good. Tastes of bittersweet chocolate and fresh brewed coffee, pretty equally balanced. Also some subtle hints of dark dehydrate fruits, but the coffee/chocolate combination is the prevalent feature.
Mouthfeel is very good. It has a good carbonation level and full bodied. Smooth mouthfeel from beginning to end, well maybe slightly clean and dry at the end. The 9% alcohol is not one you'd expect from the mouthfeel either, no hot bite at all, and it's nice and drinkable. You could use this as a sipper, but you certainly don't need to. Great representation of the style. Duck-Rabbit made it worth Drive of about 1,200 miles worth it!
