Had at Westville Pub Asheville. Served in an Oskar Blues pint glass. Notches on label indicate best if enjoyed by April '14. Just barely made it.

A- Pours a 99% opaque black color with a 1/4 inch light brown head that retains well before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a half sheet of sheer surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a jagged ring behind.

S- Roasty sweetness with notes of brown sugar and caramel. Faint piney hops trailing behind.

T- The hop bitterness is still there but mainly in the aftertaste. Now the main player is the roasty sweetness which is actually very nice. Smooth but flavorful with notes of chocolate and coffee. Faint vanilla aftertaste. Alcohol is very well masked.

M- Not as viscous as it looks, also dry. Medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.

O- if this is this good as it's nearing its shelf life, it must be awesome when it's fresh.

Very good as a dark beer. The hoppy goodness is there, but not overpowering. Creamy mouthfeel is consistent with what I expect from a good dark beer. The bitterness is not overpowering, either. It is an interesting flavor closer to a stout than an IPA, but the best of each.

A - Two fingers worth of late to develop light brown colored, lush, creamy, dense whipped frothy goodness with a bit of a rocky top... Stellar retention... The color is an opaque slightly dull black... Appears still from a distance, but there is a good bit of spry rapid paced micro sized carbonation seen towards the top of the glass under closer examination... Rock star appearance for the style... Sheets of lacing cling to the sides of the glass...

S - A nice mix of hops... Some floral and some piney... A very nice complimentary roasted malt character... Hints of milk chocolate and lightly roasted coffee... Molasses... Nice balance and depth... All the scents work well together and nothing hogs the spotlight...

T - Roasted malts... Espresso... Milk chocolate... All this is balanced nicely by a blanket of piney hops... The hops then fade a bit and are replaced by more malty goodness... More roasted malts and a hint of smoke... The hops reemerge on the finish and continue to intensify... Very nice...

M - Medium bodied... Slightly dry... Spry carbonation... Even and consistent... Goes down easily sip after sip...

D - An outstanding American Black Ale... It should also be noted that this one scores nicely in terms of the value proposition... There's a lot of very good things going on here for a rather economical price... Possibly my favorite Duck Rabbit offering... Just because they are the "dark beer specialists," doesn't mean they don't know what to do with some hops... Kudos...
