Poured into a 12 oz tulip bottled in 2013. Pours a dark amber, with a one inch off white head, that leaves behind rings of lace. Smell is bubble gum, caramel, dark fruit, fruity esters, and brown sugar. Taste is really aggressive, all the flavors from the nose with bubble gum, fruity esters, and brown sugar dominating. Body is medium, enough life for the style, a little dry, and drinkable for its heft. This is really solid and less than $6 a bomber a good deal.

This is the perfect time of year for Barley wines. This poured a dark amber color with a fairly white but faint head.
The aroma was all malt, as I would expect from this type of beer. Not much else in the nose. The initial taste was very big and I picked some spices to go along with the malt. Almost as a burnt bitter chocolate, faint along with an almond/pecan feel. The aftertaste did not last that long, so that was a bit of a disappointment.
Overall, a good representation of a full barley wine ale.

From the 650 ml. bottle. 2013 batch. Sampled January 22, 2014.

It has a reddish-brown pour with a short-lived and small fizzy white head. Decent carbonation along the side of the glass.

The aroma has a slight caramel malt character, which is not as pungent as a typical barleywine but it is the juicy, fruity character such as berries that introduced themselves to the forefront. No boozy or alcohol feel on the nose considering this is a 10% ABV.

Lighter body than I might have expected but it also tends to cling to my tongue and throat.

Fruity characters are the flavor of the day in the taste with a more muted barley and malt character. Whereas the nose is booze-less, the taste tends to brings out a slightly more fervent alcohol bite. At the very least it has a bitter and tart finish. But as it warms the malts seem to eke themselves into the picture more firmly. Still, a sipping beer.

Pours a nice creamy fluffy head that sticks around for a while, it hits almost 2 fingers and hangs out for a bit, slowly fading and leaving some nice soapy lacing, very clear auburn slight chestnut with a little coppery hue color.

Nose is so-so, some candy and syrupy malts, mild solventy phenolic booze, a mild buttery toffee, and bit of caramel, some reddish candy malts, but all in all pretty light on the nose. Fair syrupy candy note as it warms, with faint grassy earthy hops.

Taste brings candy again, a bit syrupy, with lots of candy syrup, little buttery toffee and caramel, reddish toasty malt and candied apple, and a bit of a fruity flavor in that too, a weird estery like fruity flavor and weird estery yeast profile. Booze kicks in eventually with plenty of warmth and a little tingle, mild solventy phenolic booze too. It gets a little nutty and mild biscuit malt too. Also is a hint of an earthy grassy hop with barely any bitterness. Finish is sweet and a little sticky syrupy, more candy galore, more hot booze and phenols, mild fruity ester note too, and more of the earthy hops that turn a bit spicy and mild bitterness.

Mouth is med to fuller bod, not as heavy as I expected but still syrupy, lighter but decent carb, and plenty of warming tingly booze.

Overall meh, it has some decent notes of toffee and caramel, lots of candy and a bit too much of candy to be a nice English barleywine, hops are a bit too mild, booze is quite rampant and a little solventy phenolic, and there are some strange fruity estery notes. It's still a decent beer but nothing too special.

The Bronze King was served in a delicate tulip glass. Poured from 22 oz. bottle

A- Beautiful silky light khaki colored head with great sticky lace with great legs. A deep amber, ruby color body that seems to glow

S- Toffee, brown sugar sweetness. Like a liquid beer candy explosion with a hint of alcohol and light hops in the background

T- Sweet, sugary but not cloying, sugary, estery, light hop presence, alcohol

M- Full bodied with good carbonation that fades out as it sits in the glass and warms. Thick, silky and a little chewy.

O- Overall, this is a great barley wine style ale that is ready to drink fresh. It's really well balanced, much like it's hopped up American counterpart that has been sitting in the cellar for over two years. This will hold up over the years and, like the label suggests, may develop in the bottle, but the recent release of the 2013 vintage is drinking nicely, fresh. I have another bottle that I will be laying down for a couple years to see where it goes. Will buy again and would recommend as an entry level barleywine ale. With a well balanced complexity, minus the amped up hops and alcohol harshness, this 10% "king" drinks really well and is sure to please any barley wine fan as well as those who are new to the style looking to branch out.
