“Spring” in New England is a fickle friend. So we brewed a beer that could carry us through the January cold while hinting at warmer days ahead. With notes of orange peel and coriander, the soft mouthfeel of a Belgian wit, and an intense hop profile, The Long Thaw White IPA combines the warming backbone of an IPA with citrus notes indicative of the coming spring. “Spring” in New England may be indecisive, but we can help make one decision a little easier.

12 oz bottle stamped with a drink by date of 5/15/14.

A: The body is a light yellow color, with a slightly hazy appearance. white fizzy head, receded fast, lacing is significant.

S: Wet grass with a distinct citrus note. Slight piney hoppiness.

T: Hop flavor is pronounced, piney and citrusy. Some spice, not really defined. Finishes clean, slightly bitter. Aftertaste is defined by a crisp hop note, but not bitter.

M: Feels Belgian: smooth and slightly creamy with a medium feel, light carbonation.

O: Refreshing beer. Today was pretty warm, and the evening is still unseasonably above average, this beer just feels right with it. Nice rendition of a Belgian IPA.

This one goes into my glass with a 2 finger white head, semi hazed golden apricot body with fine speckled lacing as the head fades. Aromatics bring out spicy yeast notes, citrus peel, herbal/citric hop combo this one actually tastes quite nice with the first sip thoroughly enjoyed. Hints of tangerine, oranges on the palate bitter spicy yeast components citric hop bitterness and flavor combine with some coriander spice and wit characteristics along with elements of a decent IPA. Mouthfeel finishes dry and bitter between hops and the spice mix, medium bodied sturdy carbonation it really works for me. I'm a fan so easy to drink very refreshing great mix of different styles offered in some of Harpoon's mixed packs.

From the 12 fl. oz bottle stamped: 31109A1621705. Sampled on February 2, 2014.

The pour is a kind of olive-pale yellow with some cloudiness to the end. A small white fizzy head dissolves quickly.

The aroma is grassy with orange and other citrus notes with a slight zestiness to it. Hops are more in the background than I might expect from an IPA or any style.

The body is medium but also creamy and smooth.

The taste also highlights the zesty citrus character with some vague spices and a quickly lingering dry finish.

12oz longneck bottle
A) Pours with a two finger, thick, white head. The head slowly settles leaving a sticky lacing at the edge of the glass. Clear, golden body.
S) Piney. Subtle grapefruit.
T) Light nutty and grainy notes. Steady hop bite throughout. Grapefruit.
M) Crisp. Clean. Medium light body. Tannic in the finish.
O) A good brew. A profile that ushers in a new season.

A: The beer is slightly hazy and slightly pale light yellow in color and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high off white head that died down, leaving a large patch of bubbles in the center of the glass, a collar around the edge, and a thin film in between.
S: Light aromas of orange peels and citrusy hops are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of orange citrus with hints of coriander. The hops contribute a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light to medium-bodied and a bit crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: Being a White IPA, this beer seems to feel a little lighter in body compared to other beers in the style. While it doesn't have any aromas or flavors of Belgian yeast, the witbier characteristics make this seem somewhat Belgian.

Found this simple brew at my local six pack shop. Into a pint glass.
A - Looks good bountiful 1/2 inch of head atop of a hazy White IPA beer very bright orange yellow. The only drawback is that the floaties are quite large I kind of hate sediment.
S - The base beer smells nice orange peel, coriander, and fruity Belgium yeast. Not getting much hops they must be mango or pineapple sweet hops.
T - Taste is ok mild dry yeasts meets some bittering hops but the orange peel and coriander seems a bit lost like I am detecting no spice. Pretty much just taste like an average Belgium IPA.
M - Seems on par light to medium body.

Overall I guess they need to brew a better Hefeweizen before tackling such a complex style. It just come up average.

Hazy gold with a white head. Lots of drippy lace. Enjoy by 5.15.14 Sharp, spicy orange rind and grapefruit aroma. Lots of grapefruit flavor with minimal grapefruit bitterness. Wheaty cereal grains. Orange spiciness. Good stuff.

I like the title Long Thaw. It's an acknowledgment to how much winter sucks after the holiday cheer.

On-tap 3/16/2014 at Doherty’s Ale House, in Warwick, RI served in a tapered mug glass.

A: The beer is a cloudy yellow color, with a short white head that fades slowly and leaves a spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains lemons, spices, Belgian yeast, some hops and light caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out with bready flavors from Belgian yeast and hearty malt character. Then strong flavors of citrus and spices quickly follow. The hops presence is strong but not over-powering and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and clean.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, it’s a decent beer to drink for a while.

Way underrated as far as I'm concerned...everyone who I give one to really likes it...it is very well balanced with not the strongest hop profile I will admit, but it is what it is and that is excellent...

A: Pours a very hazy medium apricot in color with significant amounts of fine particles in suspension and some golden yellow highlights. The beer has a finger tall pillowy white head that slowly reduces to a couple of medium sized patches of thick film surrounded by a thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of citrus/lemonade and slightly stronger aromas of citrus/grapefruit and tropical/pineapple hops.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of wheat with some light amounts of lemon citrus and spices (coriander). There is a fairly significant presence of hops flavors including citrus/grapefruit pith and lighter amounts of herbal + pine hops. Light amounts of bitterness in the finish which does not linger.

M: Slightly heavier than light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly thin/watery.

O: Not a bad White IPA, easy to drink with well hidden alcohol - I could easily put a couple of these back in a session. Nothing great but a solid brew.

A nice warmer day for the first of February. The layers of heavy snow and ice from various storms and very cold weather are starting to melt for oncoming spring, although I'm sure we'll get another big storm or two before then. Anyways, good day for this beer. And dated, yay! Enjoy by 4/15/14.

Pours a decent fizzy bubbly 1 finger head that fades at a med pace, a bit of soapy lacing, over very hazy peach orange colored beer.

Nose brings nice fresh hops, floral, some citrus, with mild tangerine and grapefruit, as well as a mild zesty orange, and some creamy wheat underneath, touch of apple skin and stone fruit fleshy notes, and faint hint of coriander.

Taste starts with more of the toasty but creamy wheat, a light malty flavor overall but a strong toasty wheat and almost cereal like, and very mild sweetness. Then into hops, a bit of a bitternesss and mild bitter rind bite, some citrus more clementine like and hint of tangerine. Little spicy like hop character but very little, bit grassy and floral too. It gets a little spicy with touches of coriander and spices that give the essence of spicy. It feels a bit thin though. Finish is a bit creamy and sticky despite being dry, bit more bitterness and orange rind bitter flavors, with hint more grassy slightly spicy hops.

Mouth is lighter bod, mild creamy, a bit thin and watery, nice popping carb.

Overall not bad, better than I expected for a white IPA, esp from Harpoon, but still nothing too special. A bit too thin, hops aren't as good as they could on the taste, spices are interesting but kept mild which is nice.

I had purchased this bottle at The Fridge during the course of the long, cold winter of 2013-'14, but I decided to thaw out on this, the second day of summer.

From the bottle: "'Spring' in New England is fickle, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy it! Whatever the thermometer says, enjoy The Long Thaw."; "Love Beer. Love Life. Est. 1986"; "Anticipation [-] Whether you're hoping for more snow or anxious for warmer days, waiting can be tough ... or not, if you've got this beer in your fridge[.]"

Old IPAs are like a box of chocolates - you never know what you are going to get. That said, when a beer incorporates spices and coriander, I would imagine that it will hold up nicely. I got a massive finger of dense, bone-white head from my pour that slowly fell, leaving great lacing in its wake. Nose was grassy, lemon-citrusy and with a tinge of pepper. Nothing wrong there and my mouth was beginning to water as a result. Nose was a slightly-hazy sunshine yellow (SRM = > 2, < 4). It looked like sunshine in a glass, which would have been more appropriate on a cold, overcast day, but I pressed on. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, almost creamy and the peppery flavor of the coriander was immediate on the tongue. It slowly gave 'way to a lemony taste that reminded me, in total, of a lemon muffin. Finish was semi-dry and very refreshing, actually. This could be a summer beer, for that mattter.

I'm a big fan of white IPA's, in fact I think its my favorite style (and my favorite beer outright is Accumulation white IPA from New Belgium). This, my second beer from Harpoon, has made me a big fan of what they do. This beer pours excellent without too much spiciness, something a lot of WIPA's over do. All in all a very good beer.

Small head but it leaves decent lace--starts off like a blanket but becomes spotty later in the tasting. The liquid is quite clear for the style. The color is light--gold with a tinge of white.

Fresh cut grass smell. A little bit of wheat nose.

Lightly sweet with a black pepper finish. Closer to IPA than "white" with a definitive hop bite in the swallow. The body is richer than expected. Neutral carbonation. Creamy finish.

Pours a golden orange color with an unfiltered appearance with sediment. One familiar with beer could indicate this is a wheat beer, others might say cloudy. The aroma is big on hoppy and wheat citrus, kind of smells like cleaning product with the yeast and wheat notes meshing with a firm hoppyness. The flavor is quite good, with more citrus notes, lemongrass, and pine. Moderate bitterness but sticks to the roof of your mouth as the citrus hits the taste buds. The body is light with a prickly medium to high carbonation. Overall this is a pretty drinkable hoppy ipa, like an American hop spiked Hoegaarden.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a Sebago pint glass.

The color is a hazy gold with a finger if foamy white head and some thick lacing left in the glass.

The smell is muted but a slight grassy hop aroma us there trying announce itself. There is a slight malt sweetness here I'm the aroma that lets things even out just a little.

The taste if this beer is smooth fruit flavors that glide through the middle and give off a slight cantaloupe flavor. There us a slight lemon flavor here before a bitterness comes forward. It builds slow then comes in fast at the end to give a slight a slight bready flavor there.

The feel is light and has a great smooth body that helps it go down easy. There is a silky texture that is like a pillow and us soft and inviting.

Quickly becoming one of my favorites. One of my favorite styles.. Witbier.. Combined with IPA from the brewery that already brews my favorite IPA. (to date). My only complaint would be the mouthfeel: it's coarse carbonation is not in keeping with a witbier/witbier hybrid. Complaint aside, I really like this beer. Unfortunately, it's a seasonal, and the stock in my town has run dry. (No idea why.) Great beer for springtime in Maine. Would love Harpoon to add it to the permanent roster.
