The subtle character of roasted malts complement the sweet flavor of rich maple sugar in this hearty porter—a true taste of New England. Maple Tap maintains a smoothness that belies its hearty base. Sweet nutty aromas of dark sugar are balanced by earthy Willamette hops in this rich porter.

Bottle to glass. Aroma: maple, toasted barley. Look: dark black color. Thin. Medium grey ish white head. Taste. Maple, brown sugar, wood, cola, smoke, barley. Feel is smooth. Low carbonation. Good beer. Very tasty. My new favorite harpoon although winter warmer is still an old standby."

Pours a two-finger light brown head that fades quickly to a ring leaving traces of lace. Very dark brown color no highlights. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Light roasted malt nose and flavor is roasted malt and disappointing vague hints of maple. Label has ABV at 9.1% and it is hidden. 2014 on neck. $7.95 for a 22oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

simply stamped 2014 on the neck, much less intrusive than JR Smith or the Birdman

eyes...
nice fluff coat (or hat as it were), one full finger on the initial pour but calming down at a decent pace, pretty dark brown with some light skirting amongst the edges, good carbonation flowing up from the nether realms, nice drapery of microbubbles on the swirl, solid

nose...
sweetness first and then roasty toasty porter goodness, dry cocoa with a sweeter edge, mollasses' cousin, slight coffee underpining, the alcohol is slightly detectable to this sniffer, nice

taste...
comes off sweet, barely hanging on with the roast notes in an attempt to bring this back from the brink of diabetic coma-ville, once I get used to the sugar rush I do sense the syrup, yep, tastes like syrup, coats the tongue pretty well and then a slightly smoky-ashy aftertaste kicks in, the ABV is well hidden, the feel is a bit light for a porter but not terrible.

verdict?
could this be the log cabin of my dreams? the aunt jemima to rock my socks off? Sadly my flapjacks are not enthralled. This comes off a bit on the sweet side for me.

at least I am listening to some live Eric Johnson, life ain't so bad

22oz bottle, purchased at the Vermont brewery location.

Almost black. Sweet aroma, taste is also on the sweeter side. Maple overpowers any roasty flavor. Thicker

Snagged a 22oz bomber of the 2014 version of this yesterday at The Beer Store (Nashua - $6.00). Chilled out on the 'Zebo deck today with this one....

Poured into a Sammy Perfect Pint glass, it was a very dark amber. It was clear, with a bit of garnet also glimmering.... Head was creamy and a mocha color, lasting quite well at 1/4" at the pour, slowly ebbing to a fine layer covering the brew. Lacing was pretty good, with some foam sticking to the glass quite nicely. Aroma was lovely, with caramel and maple notes wafting about. The malty aspect was top-shelf, and there was a smidge of roasty-ness also present. Body was medium to medium-plus, and it had little in the way of prickliness.

Flavor? Verry nice! Luscious malts are present, with caramel, brown sugar, and some maple tickling the palate. Has a bit of roasty choco, and it's a little nutty as well. Throw in a touch of brown bread with a suggestion of floral hopping.... Unlike previous reviews, I found the ABV quite well hidden here, and I also can't figure the negative waves (Moriarty) on this one... I quite enjoyed it!! Prosit!!!

Very good...I disagree with others in that I feel the high alcohol % was wrapped up well. The sweetness was also counterbalanced by a nutty/ unnameable bitterness...I do't know...I liked it...Wish I could present a more well constructed and technical review, but I have been enjoying this all day ...

2014 22oz bottle served in a Porter Bar goblet.

Pours orange-brown, very dark but not quite opaque, with a small and only partially durable head. The feel is more lively and reflects more carbonation than suggested by the appearance. Near full bodied with some warmth and slight harshness from the alcohol.

The aroma is sweet, with a suggestion of maple syrup, and nutty. These also describe the flavor athough there is ample bitterness to leave the bitter-sweet flavor seeming just slightly sweet. Some nice notes of dark fruits and dark bread. High ABV is too obvious; this might well benefit from some aging.

O: likely one of the best from Harpoon Brewery.

This beer was not cloyingly sweet and seemed to mostly hit the mark. Alcohol level was deceptive and this beer met my expectations on all levels. This beer was best at cellar temperature or just below.
