Hmm.. winter beers. I've got to get used to the style. Spicey is good, but I don't care for it that much, but that is how these beers are... Okay, I'm ready.
Pours nice and dark mahogany with just a little foam on top, plus the token foam ring which forms around the edge. The foam ring sticks a bit, and slowly runs down.
Smells Christmasey and spicey.
Tastes malty, hoppy and spicey. just what you would want from a winter beer. It has a little bit of a metallic taste I don't care for and don't think should be present. The balance of malt, hop, and spice is chosen well. For my tastes it is high on the correander, low on the malt.
Smell is mostly of the spices (correander?)
Mouthfeel starts out creamy but dissipates to oil failry quickly.
The finish is somewhat clean, with a hint of spice hop aftertaste.
I'm learning I'm not much of a winter beer person, but I LOVE one that is low on spice (like Sprechers or Goose island). I also prefer one that appears thicker and leans to maltier. This one is not low enough on the spice for my tastes, but as far as a winter goes, it is lower than average. I would recommend this for a person interested in experimenting with winter beers.
