Enjoyed a Two Hearted Ale (Bell's) last night and a Finestkind (Smuttynose) IPA the night before that, so this is a bit of a letdown. It's still a nice beer and probably the best choice I could have made at the supermarket on a Sunday night (as opposed to my usual place to score beer). (286 characters)

12oz bottle poured into pint glass

A- rich light golden color with white creamy head about 1 and half fingers, minimal head retention, decent visibility.

S- lots of florals with a hint of citrus.

T- floral hops but not too bitter on the front end, piney, sweet malts, with a slight bread aftertaste.

M- medium body, light carbonation, smooth creamy feel and thickness.

O- solid IPA on the lighter side. (408 characters)

Drank from bottle due to lack of glass at the time:

S: Slightly hoppy and floral, nothing crazy

T: Hops and floral notes with a slight bitterness at first, finishing off with a bready note.

M: Very smooth

O: Really like the balance of including yeast and malts as well as the hop and floral taste. I am not really an IPA guy, and I get more pleasure from this as a drinkable beer than from, say, 60 min. If you're crazy about hoppy bitterness, you will find this too sweet (478 characters)

Poured into a pint glass

A- Pours a golden yellow color with just a hint of amber. A pillow-like finger and a half of head that sticks around a bit and leaves nice lacing.

S- This IPA hits you with earthier hop aromas than it's citrusy west coast brethren. Floral, pine, resin, and just a slight hint of citrus. Nothing that will blow socks off but balanced and complex nonetheless.

T- Pleasant amount of hop bitterness up front with a continuation of the earthy hops. Virtually undetectable citrus but nice amounts of pine along with some nice maltiness. It's surprisingly toasty, but it is not strange or undesirable in any way. Overall very nice.

M- Manages to be refreshing while still having a nice and welcome creaminess. Just enough carbonation and goes down very easily.

O- A reliable and pleasing east coast IPA. I do tend to lean towards IPAs with more citrus character, but this one will certainly not disappoint. Not overly bitter and this would also serve as a nice introduction to American IPAs for those that find themselves reluctant to give them a try. (1,074 characters)

12oz bottle served in a pint glass
Bright copper gold overall it is quite clear. After the pour the head is a couple of fingers tall but it falls quickly and to a thin layer of fine bubbles that lace nicely throughout the session. The bottle says IPA but my nose doesn't quite agree. The aroma is much more in line with a pale ale than an IPA with a lot of caramel and a bit of sweet buttery notes and very little in the way of hops. The taste too is ok, there is a good bit of bitterness up front and a lot of sweet caramel but really not much in the way of hop flavor or unique malts. The beer finishes with a bit of a metallic twang that i'm not too sure about either. Carbonation is relatively high and there is a decent amount of bitterness in there as well which is nice and overall its not too sweet and not too dry. Overall this is a decent sessionable beer, an IPA for people who dont like IPAs perhaps. (912 characters)

Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Pours a nice copper color with a decent head. Smell is ok nothing special. Taste Is Actually Pretty good. Refreshing with some suttle hints of citrus. Nothing spectacular or overwhelming but decently balanced and enjoyable. Feel this beer is slightly underrated and find it to be a little above average for the ipas I like. Will try again (376 characters)

For a wide-spread distributed IPA...Harpoon has to be my favorite..

Serving: tap and & bottle.
Appearance: Copper.
Smell: Nice subtle hoppy smell.
Taste: more on the hoppy side, with a wee-bit of floral notes.
mouthfeel: on the heavier side.
Ovearall: Formidable IPA. (268 characters)

Poured this into a pint glass. The light brassy body gives up a frothy 1 finger head that sinks down some but never goes away.
The aroma has a deep rich caramel malt, brown sugar, breadyness to it along with a decent amount of citrus and floral notes.
The flavor doesn't venture off too far from the nose. I find an incredible balance here, between the caramel malt and the hop bitterness that is usually achieved in pale ales. No extremes here.
The mouthfeel is light with a juicy finish.
Overall a solid brew. (511 characters)

This is a great beer. As far as IPA's go, I would consider it right in front of the middle of the road candidates. It has a great floral nose, however, it leaves you wanting more, not much, but wanting more. Considering all the IPA's that are out there, that really deliver a hoppy punch, Harpoon kind of drinks more like a lager. Delicious for all cuisine and all seasons. I rate it high because it is a great "go-to" if your local store lacks selection, if your local is on the eastern seaboard of course. (508 characters)

12oz bottle poured into a pilsner glass. 41 F. Enjoy by 05/15/14, according to the bottle code.

Pours just slightly amber in color, crystal clear, straw yellow on the edges, light carbonation, small white head. Smell is almost lagery. Definitely pilsnerish. Certainly not what I expect from an IPA, but it doesn't smell bad. Just not an IPA. Maybe I'm too west coast for this.

Taste is actually nice, mild (coming from a land of IIPA, maybe). It's a bit more caramelly than a pilsner, hoppier, not as crisp. It's tasty. I like it.

Mouthfeel is crisp and light. Overall, it's pretty good. (590 characters)

Tasted On: 02-28-2014
Freshness: Best by 03-15-2014
Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle, pry-cap
Glassware: Shaker Pint
Purchased: 6-pack from Kroger

A: Clear and light orange in color. The head is white, 2 fingers high and has good retention and lacing.

S: Light aromas are of citrus hops.

T/M: The high carbonation gives it a crisp mouthfeel. Tastes are mainly of the hoppy bitterness. The finish has a bit of astringency to it.

O: A good IPA, although a bit one-dimensional. (476 characters)

Poured from bottle to mug. It was a pretty golden color, head stuck around basically til the last drop. Smell was decent. The taste was a typical IPA, which isn't a bad thing, there was just nothing really to differentiate it from others. The price is pretty good compared to other IPAs I've had that tasted relative. Not the best beer I've ever drank but I did enjoy it. No complaints here. (391 characters)

Very herbal and citrusy aroma. It's mild and less west-coast in style, but I actually really enjoy just taking a big woody, herbal-spice whiff of this one, but the taste does not deliver. A little boozy and thin, not a terribly pleasant or smooth bitterness. Overall, I'll take it if given no other IPA options, as it is solid and gets the job done, but it does leave me wanting more on the taste side of things. (412 characters)

This is one of my favorites so I may be a tad bias.

A - Deep golden/yellow, decent head, slightly underwheling lacing (but its still there)

S - Awesome, super floral and slightly fruity.

T - Filled with floral notes. Such an interesting well balanced IPA. Slightly malty/fruity. The even floral balance throughout the body is really what makes this one perfect. It is apparent as soon as you smell it, and lasts even after you're done tasting it.

M - Nice light/medium body. Medium carbination. A very friendly beer.

O - I love it. If you havent tried one and live in NE then there is something wrong. So far one of my personal favorites! Great job Harpoon. (663 characters)

Poured 12oz bottle into a Samuel Adams pint glass.

A - Light, golden amber color. Half a finger of head with a little lacing throughout.

S - Pine and citrus, but not much there.

T - Grapefruit and floral taste. Light hops and a fairly sweet malt.

M - Lot of carbonation but very light and refreshing.

Overall, not my favorite Harpoon Brew but a very drinkable beer. Light band refreshing. It's a fairly light IPA so those that don't like the bitterness of other IPAs may like this. I'm sure I'll pick up again. (520 characters)

Appearance - straw golden yellow, fine head which dissipates rather quickly.

Aroma - floral and citrus layered over a pleasant honey sweet maltiness.

Taste - grassy and citrusy to start followed by a light malty sweetness and a nice hop finish with just an edge of bitterness.

Mouthfeel - smooth and round with a sweet soft finish.

Overall - very nice IPA with a great balance of malt and hops neither of which is over stated. Very drinkable. (447 characters)

An ok beer. Had on tap, fine taste but hard for me to rate higher with so many great IPA's. Should be b priced with the average IPA's and I would rate higher overall. For those of you who do not like the stronger tasting IPA's this might be your ber. Many a friend of mine o not like the real hoppy IPA's I do, so this would be a high recommendation for them. I would be interested in their feedback. ENJOY!!! (409 characters)

appearance; gold, small bubbles that rise all around the glass to the surface, a finger of white head settles into thin lacing.

smell; not bad but not particularly inviting; sour grapes, hints of citrus and a bit of pine.

taste; obvious grapefruit flavora but the citrus flavor itself is quite mild, yeast, and some pine and bitterness in the finish.

mouthfeel; not bad, medium/light body with the carbonation lingering on the tongue.

overall; not the greatest or most impressive IPA I've had by any means but I'm not sorry it was part of the twelve pack i bought, and those who can't handle very strong, better, IPA's will appreciate its mild flavor. (655 characters)

I'm not a giant fan of this beer. It looks ok, it smells just ok, it tastes in my book less than ok.

On the surface it's golden look and white foam head just don't start or finish right in my mouth.

Overall I've had other Harpoon beers and feel they could do better. (268 characters)

Pours a clear light copper with a half finger of fluffy white head that dissipated quickly. The nose is only mildly hoppy. Overall, the flavor profile is quite light as well. The finish is slightly hoppy, but I have had top-shelf APAs that are hoppier than this offering. (271 characters)

(Notes of 02/2009) Tasted during a horizontal tasting of two American IPAs, the other one being the Flying Dog "Snake Dog IPA"; BB 21/10/2008, served only mildly chilled in a wine glass.

A: dark golden to amber in colour, fast-retreating off-white foamy head, fizzy upfront, then turning light on the carbonation.
S: balanced - a "breezy" aroma mixed of honey drink, lychee fruits, other slightly sharp tropical fruits, a flowery scent of Cascade-like US hops springs to mind, set against an enticing bedrock of light biscuity and faintly caramely malts. As the beer warms up a bit, a semi-sharp touch of pineapples also comes forward, witnessing the work of yeastiness.
T: sweet honey-ish, grapefruity and lychee-shell-like flavours upfront precede a lightly tannic, leafy hop bitterness and residual citric sourness; settling to a lightly chewy finish with lingering biscuity elements of pale malts, while hop bitterness stays loyally at the end of the tasting, transcending a little piney scent as well.
M&D: unfortunately, it's pretty thin on the body and the semi-spritzy fizziness comes not as soft and natural as a bottle-conditioned ale, but perhaps it's designed as such (light) to be quaffable and the overall mouthfeel is clean enough indeed. Not as deep and complex as the FD Snake Dog IPA tasted alongside, but overall an easy-drinking example all the same. (1,371 characters)

Presentation: Very attractive label in the Harpoon tradition with really nice colors and graphics. Front label states “Love beer, Love Life” and gives a bit of brewery info. Back label pay homage to the 20th Anniversary of Harpoon IPA. Neck label gives a short description of the beer as well as paying homage to the 20th Anniversary of the IPA. Enjoy by 12.15.13 printed on the bottle.

Appearance: An aggressive pour from its 12oz brown bottle into a 16oz Imperial Pint led to a 3 finger white head of medium density resting atop a clear golden yellow amber colored beer. Head retention was 4min before fading to a thin coating and ring.

Smell/Aroma: Smells of citrus hops with slight hints of floral tones and a nice malt back bone.

Flavor/Taste: Taste is of citrus hops on the front end with a slightly floral hop midpoint and a bitter resin hop back end and finish all resting upon a toasty bready malt backbone. Hops seem very light and not overpowering.

MouthFeel/Drinkability: Medium bodied with an above average amount of carbonation that leads to a smooth slightly crisp mouthfeel. Highly drinkable. 4/5

Overall/Comments: A very good IPA that doesn't wow you but does a good job representing the style. Solid and drinkable. Classified as an American IPA @ 5.9% ABV. Consumed 10/19/2013. (1,323 characters)

Nice clear golden color with a white spotty head that sticks in spots on the glass. The smell is pine bitterness with little malt present. The taste is not as bitter as the smell with slight caramal honey pale malt that leads into the piney flower bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium. Not really a hoppy tasteing ipa like the smell would make you think. I do like this very good. (379 characters)

A-It pours a medium dark amber color with light clingy head. Looks great in a curvy glass!

S-Smells lightly floral kind of mild for an IPA in my opinion.

T-Tastes on the light floral side with light carbonation and little bite.

M-Very light, easy going with low bitterness.

O-What a great drinking IPA for a session! Easy to drink with a tad more ABV than most of the lighter IPAs so I guess that's why I like it so much. I only tried it after checking this site and decided to become a member to review it as my first beer because of other people's reviews! I highly recommend it even though I may not be a beer expert but believe that I have had my share to be a source of information. (691 characters)
