Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA will challenge your senses and your palate. As the vibrant aroma rushes out of your glass you will notice the blend of piney and tropical fruit notes. At first sip, this big beer starts with a powerful hop bitterness up front and an aggressive hop flavor and character throughout.

Leviathan Imperial IPA is brewed with tons of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt body to balance the hop intensity. We used copious amounts of a variety of hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo at various points during the boil to create a complex hop flavor and clean lingering bitter finish. We then fermented the beer with Harpoon’s own versatile proprietary yeast. Finally, we dry hopped at a rate of over 1 lb a barrel to produce this beer’s massive aroma.

Best by date of 05/15/16

Appearance - Pours crystal clear and golden orange in color. Finger width, off-white had that holds retention fairly, then dies down to a thin, broken layer of suds across the surface.

Smell - Equally sweet and hoppy. Floral notes, citrus and touch of spice met by a formidable sweet bready aroma.

Taste - Follows the nose. Floral hops and candied citrus with a touch of pine and spice. Bread with lesser caramel malt backbone. Finishes with pith bitterness and a bit of astringency from the alcohol.

Mouthfeel - Full-bodied with moderate carbonation. Slick texture quickly turns dry and slightly abrasive in the finish.

Overall - Decent Impy IPA, but falls well short of the better ones on the market, mostly due to the bit of harshness exhibited.

Nice light copper color. Minimal head, even after a fairly aggressive pour. Big, robust tropical aroma: my favorite part of this beer. Tastewise, this is one dimensional to me, even though it was balanced well by the sweeter malts. There is some grapefruit, citrus, and tropical fruit flavors, but its hard for them to shine through all the hoppiness. You can taste the booze (which at 10% abv is not surprising), but I am not a fan of that in my beers. Nice, creamy mouthfeel with ideal carbonation. Personally, would take Harpoon's standard issue IPA over this any day. Not bad, just not my thing.

Not for me... Looks and smells like an IPA. The hop smash you get up front is too much. Malty finish is there but hard to get from all the bitterness. very high alcohol and a beer you have to sip slowly.

Not much to think when first sipped but hold in your mouth for a little and you really start to pull out the flavor. Distinct after taste and one of the heavier beers. Great balance considering the alcohol content (about 8%).

Starts with a dark golden pour with a brownish tint. The smell is that of chocolate, hops and barley, with a taste that starts bitter and finishes sweet. This beer drinks very smooth, especially for one with a 10 percent alcohol content. Not incredibly bitter for an imperial IPA, but certainly good.

Delicious, hearty imperial IPA. This coppery, smooth, and hoppy ale is among the best I've had. The bitterness from the hops are balanced by the malt leaving a bittersweet aftertaste.

12 oz bottle that I drank straight from the bottle at a Christmas party, IPA sampler picked up from wholesale club. This was one very impressive Imperial IPA, very hop forward which I love, with citrusy, bitter "dankness". I could drink a lot more of these. Very smooth for the abv as well.

Clear, dark, garnet/ruby, large head that dissipates quickly

Hoppy, chocolatey, strong malt backbone/undercurrent

Bitter with a sweet aftertaste, yeast is faint, full-bodied, strong flavor, almost like molasses

Thick, smooth, heavy

This brings me back to Harpoon tastings at their Boston brewery!

I absolutely loved this beer and put it in my top 5. Maybe I was getting burned out from the bitterness of my recent IPA/DIPA run but this one totally and pleasantly surprised me. Sweet and creamy in aroma and taste, the boozy non-bitter close is what sealed the deal for me. Big win!

Picked this up on my East Coast beer run this summer.
A - Pours a clear dark amber orange , nice head, some thick lacing on the sides. Classic DIPA look.
S - Strong aroma of malt and hop resins. Love it.
T - Resiny, piney, bitter, with citrus hints throughout.
M - Wonderfully sticky. This is what I expect from a DIPA.
O - As you can tell, I really like this beer. This is what I expect from a DIPA. Fantastic.
*This beer reminded me of 3 Floyds Dreadnaught; I just check and I rated them the same.

From a 12 oz bottle into a glass. Best before the end of November stamped on the neck, consumed yesterday. Pours amber color, clear, with a fluffy head. Deep rich aroma of malts with some pine hops swirling around. Flavor starts very sweet, then you get the dark fruits and raisin. Back end has the bitterness with the pine and leafy hops and a touch of spice. No alcohol burn but the body is very heavy, a sipping beer. Overall it is a winter DIPA, but simply too heavy with not enough hops. Disappointed on this one.

Absolutely delicious over the top double IPA. Wonderful citrus overtones, super hoppy but not acrid. Feels great in the mouth. Small amount of fine foam that clings to the glass. Beautiful amber color.

Really liked the smell - malty, resiny and just a hint of tropical fruit. You can smell the alcohol and definitely taste it too, especially on the aftertaste. I liked the subtle caramel flavor. Pretty fresh, well-balanced beer. Just a little boozy to me.

Great beer! Its complex with different flavors that do seem to work together. The amount of malt does take away from it being this crazy hardcore IPA but nevertheless it really is. Do not drink more than (2) at one sitting.

A: crystal clear; bronze in color; 1 finger off white head that receded to a thin collar; nice lacing;

S: blood orange, tangerine, grapefruit, a touch of earthiness;

T: flavor is a little subdued; earthiness up front a little malt sweetness, blood orange, and tangerine at mid-palate; tangerine at the finish with light bitterness;

M: a little sticky; low to moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: loved the nose and the first sip; even though the flavor wasn't overpowering, it blew up my palate very quickly;

Huge malt bomb - the sweetness of the malt overpowers the hoppiness. It's not a bad brew, just too sweet and a tad hot for me. Definitely no something I would seek out.

12oz bottle poured into Spiegelau IPA glass. Pours a fairly clear orange amber color. Foamy three fingers of head with resilient blotchy lacing. Very distinct sweet scent. A sense of the high ABV is present in the smell. Very flat and relatively thick feel. The caramel malt is present throughout the taste. Piney hop bitterness at end. I like it but am not as high on it as most appear to be. (8.5)

This is alright. I don't think they did as good a job of hiding the alcohol % like, say, Hopslam. That's a real shame. The flavors are there (pine, citrus, etc) I just wish it was a LITTLE bit more there.

Has the look of a mixed fruit juice. Smells of dark fruit and candy. Taste much like sweet fruit, such as pineapple, peach, apricot, and orange. Sweet and alcoholic. Slight bitterness in the finish. I am not the biggest fan of double ipa's with such a sweet taste, like this and 90 minute. I am much more partial to west coast styles like ruination and rampant.

I think age helped. I found this bottle and didn't notice the best by date until I opened, dated 9-23-2012. The hops were subdued and the alcohol mellowed. Tasted fairly smooth, not a lot of nose left but still quite a good head and carbonation.

A decent brew overall, but nothing incredible.

This beer is very boozy and hoppy. Personally I enjoy both. If you don't, this is not the best choice for you.

Its biggest weakness is that (contrary to the blurb on the label), the hop flavor is very one-dimensional. Quite frankly, you can probably find many beers at your local grocery store which have a more complex taste.

A bit more hoppy than expected. Nice color and head. I prefer high alcohol beers but need to do a good job hiding it. This beer I can taste the higher percentage. Still enjoying presence of the IPA.

A - Slightly hazy, dark gold body. Medium white head fades quickly leaves heavy lacing.
S - Powerful hops, pine, medicinal concentrated citrus. Dank.
T - The nose definitely influences the flavor, while breathing in such a powerful aroma it is difficult to pin point all the hop profiles. It all works well together but it is very complex, pine, medicinal, spiciness, citrus, more pine. Long lingering bitterness that warms at the end and sweetens. Reminds you this is 10%.
M - Thick, chewey, coats the palate, but it is not cloying. The bitterness also helps the finish dry out.
O - An excellent imperial IPA. Certainly not something you could have everyday, but this one is up there with other imperials. I dragged my feet on trying this one out, I'm sorry that I did. Would definitely seek out again.

Served: 6 September 2014
Serving: On tap at the brew hall, in a sampler

Appearance: Clear orange-yellow with a little bit of a head, which collapses quickly likely due to the size of the sampler glass and the high alcohol content. Looks decent, but not special. 3.75/5

Smell: Grapefruity dankness with a somewhat astringent malt sweetness. 3.75/5

Taste: Dank, musky hops on an astringently sweet malt backbone. 3.5/5

Mouthfeel: Decent mouthfeel for a DIPA. 3.75/5

Overall: One of Harpoon's weakest options, in an area where, due to current craft demands, they should really shine. The hops have a weird musky character to them which makes the taste subpar compared to most DIPAs. Granted, they say this is an "East Coast" style DIPA, so hops aren't supposed to play as major a role as in their West Coast variants, but they could have made the hops seem a bit cleaner and crisper rather than dank. Disappointed.

Had on tap at the Vermont brewery. A caramel brown colour, quite clear with a slight lacing, aroma has caramel malts, grapefruit and pungent fruity citrus. Taste has grapefruit and florals, quite jammy, leading to a more spicy finish. Mouthfeel is full, moderate carbonation, more alcohol on the finish, noticeable quite caramelly. A quite sweet, though flavourful IPA, hoppy oils and a bracing hop bitterness. Decent and quite hoppy and satisfying but not an inspiring DIPA, but one I would have again.
