This looked to be an interesting beer, and I was not disappointed. On the pour, it was a dark brown brew with a thin layer of head. A good start, although a little more head would have been welcome.

Aroma started out with roasted barley and coffee. There was a slightly fruity character, along with some definite bitter chocolate lurking in the background. Well balanced, nothing stood out glaringly.

Taste was dark roasted malt up front, along with burnt barley and hints of coffee. A little bitter chocolate was noticeable as well. After swallowing, a slight sweet fruitiness came forth. Aftertaste was long roasted malt.

Mouthfeel was OK, not too heavy, not watery. Not as chewy as it could have been, but better then average.

Overall it was pretty good, not at the world class level but a good take on the style.

On tap at Sticks and Stones.Poured ink black into a standard pint glass with a thin almost non existent head atop.Aromas were all fudge with some underlying roast,a dessert beer no doubt.Big sweetness from the fudge-like chocolate flavors on the palate, some underlying vanilla but the chocolate is the major player here. There is just enough roast and dryness to keep it from being overly cloying.Take this beer for what it is,it's a sweet chocolate stout and it's true to form.

12 oz. bottle poured into a pint tumbler.

A: Very impressive appearance. Jet black and viscous, like an imperial stout. Large sticky head.

S: Very powerful coffee and chocolate nose. The smell will stick with you even after finishing the beer.

T: The taste isn't quite what I expected but good nonetheless. Make no mistake, this is quite a strong beer in the flavor department with an absolute assault of coffee and chocolate flavors and malt in between.

M: A strange mouthfeel with a weird aftertaste. This beer seems capable of being great, but it isn't, it's just good.

D: I wouldn't be able to handle more than one of these in a sitting.

I also had a stout (Heart Of Darkness) from Magic Hat Brewing Company in the same session and I enjoyed the Harpoon more.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. There is no noticeable freshness date on the label.

Appearance: This beer pours dark brown nearly black and is nearly opaque. Only a little bit of light makes it through at the very edges of the glass. From the pour it produces a one inch beige collar of thick foam. The head hangs on well and makes some thin lacing on the glass.

Smell: There are strong chocolate and dark roasted malty notes in the aroma.

Taste/Palate: This is a strait forward medium to full bodied beer with a fairly thin texture for the style. It has a simple but very tasty rich dark chocolaty character with some sweetness from the malt as well as loads of roasted/toasted notes. I also get some bitter dark coffee notes that hook up with the light bitterness from the hops.

Notes: I really enjoyed this beer and wished I could get more than what was in the mixed sample pack.

Pours very dark with mahogany hues shining through when held to the light. Great, frothy, light brown head that retains forever! Smells like Hersheys syrup. So far, so good...then tasting the beer, it goes downhill. There's a certain off-taste right up front that sticks to the palate. Sort of tinny, along with chocolate syrup, and a weird cherry-like flavor. Semi dry finish, light carbonation, pretty thin. It's okay at best. Great looking beer, smells pretty promising, then let down by the actual substance of the brew - the flavor. Close, but no cigar.

A- Deep dark brown with a thin lace of a tan head that sticks around and leaves some lacing.

S- Very complex with sweet milk chocolate predominating mixed with a good amount of raisin, smells like a raisin candy bar in a good way. Also in the mix are light espresso, vanilla and whipped cream.

T- Not as complex as the nose but still tasty. Lots of chocolate with a finish of the whipped cream, the other flavors seem lost in the mix. It's a little like drinking chocolate milk and even more so like melted chocolate ice cream.

M- Smooth and creamy. It's not the perfect creaminess that some stouts accomplish but it certainly comes close to the mark.

D- This is a good beer that I would be happy to have again, in fact I'm gonna have another one right now, but in the end I'd give it up to try something new in a heartbeat.

12 ounce bottle, with "best by" dating etched onto the neck of the bottle of 03-15-09. Pours with little head developing above. A load of dark chocolate fudge brownies awakens the nostrils. More chocolate, fudge, chocolate syrup, chocolate bars, and then some more chocolate notes on the palate. I don't think they skimped on the chocolate on this one. None too subtle, not one I would go for again real soon. Likely would go well with a, you guessed it, chocolate dessert of some sort.

Pours dark brown to black with a brown head. The aroma is milk chocolate and some roasted malts. The flavor is chocolate with something resembling chocolate milk in there as well. The flavor is pretty good, but the very end of the flavor as well as the aftertaste have something going on I didn't really like, though I am not sure how to describe it. The mouthfeel is creamy and the carbonation is medium to high.

Harpoon's version of a chocolate stout begins with the notice on the label: "brewed with an abundance of chocolate malt and a touch of chocolate flavor." One whiff reveals that the label does not lie. The aroma is indeed quite chocolatey, smelling of malts, chocolate, and coffee, and coming off on the nose very much like some of Starbucks' more tasty mocha latte creations.

On the tongue, the beer does taste less like a coffee creation, but the resemblance is still strong, with the major flavors still being chocolate malt, coffee, and milk chocolate. A hint of tobacco and ash lies deep beneath, and a runnel of cream threads throughout the mouthful. The aftertaste is more heavily dominated by chocolate malt, but good portions of sweet chocolate still remain, and linger on the tongue for quite a while. Mouthfeel is medium-light, and carbonation is medium-light.

Overall, this is a good chocolate stout, though perhaps slightly too heavy on the milk chocolate flavoring, as the beverage does tend to come across sweet--like a big shot of chocolate syrup into a slightly-too-small cup of coffee. Still, the flavors are good, and the beer goes down easily.

12oz bottle pulled from fridge poured into a standard pint glass. freshness date was unclear.

pours out pretty much opaque black, just very slight ruby hues in the light. 1 1/2 fingers of creamy tan, mocha colored head that slowly faded to a retentive creamy layer. tiny bits of lace.

lots of milk chocolate and maybe just a hint of roast. not much else going on, maybe a bit lactose like.

again, milk chocolate in the begining and some bitter dark chocolate towards the finish. a touch of light dark fruits with a nice bitter finish. kind of a muddled unappealing aftertaste. simple, maybe a touch artificial but overall pretty tasty.

lighter side of medium bodied, maybe a bit too much carbonation.

an easy drinker, but 2 would be more than enough. overall a simple beer, the chocolate is there, but nothing blowing me away. ive had better chocolate stouts, but ive always had worse.

Deep dark brown with a thick and dimpled head of oatmeal colored foam that lingers long. Inviting aroma of rich cocoa, semi sweet, just a bit of roasted malt.

Flavor is initially full of cocoa, but moves quickly to roasted malt and understated bitterness. Mild hop flavors punctuate, and some espresso notes emerge in the finish. Well balanced beer tending a bit more toward cocoa than malt. Flavor seems somewhere between a Southern Tier Choklat and a Rogue Chocolate Stout.

Even mouthfeel, fairly full but tending toward slick, finishes dry. Tasty beer for the season, prtty drinkable.

A: Dark brown, nearly black. Nice creamy chocolate colored head with good retention.

S: Rich chocolate and coffee with a hint of nuttiness. Faint smell of alcohol. Overall, a very good smelling brew.

T: Medium bodied, tastes pretty heavily of chocolate with a mocha/coffee finish. Alcohol is detectable and at a desirable level.

M: Not the thickest stout, but mouthfeel is nice. Creamy, smooth, this is what you expect in a stout and this example is well executed.

D: Very drinkable stout with a nice blend of simple and familiar flavors. Feel free to have a few of these on a cold rainy night.

This is a good stout, it's not groundbreaking but it is very solid. If you see the Harpoon Wintry Mix, pick it up knowing you're getting a nice sampling of some good beer in a range of different styles.

Pitch black hue for the body with a nice full thick mocha tan head, nice even lacing between sips. Aroma dark malts herbal hops with a touch of cocoa powder. Flavor is sickengly straight forward with cocoa powder additions, I feel like I took a spoonful of Hershey's cocoa powder. Creamy milk finish with that cocoa dominance no real hop tones. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a sturdy carbonation level no overdone. Drinkability is solid a bit too dessert for my likings but if cocoa powder is your thing this beer gives it up.

12 oz bottle (dated 2011) served in a pint glass.

Pours nearly black and apparently clear, but leaves slight reddish-brown highlights at edges of glass. Small and relatively short-lived tan.

Aroma - pronounced aroma of chocolate (think brownies and hot chocolate mix) with a background of roasted malt and vanilla. Sweet.

T - Follows aroma to some extent, with pronounced chocolate flavor. Sweet, perhaps a bit too much so for my taste, but not cloying and with notable bitterness as well. Harpoon's website says IBU = 40, but it doesn't seem that high. Lingering chocolate flavors plus chocolate malt and a hint of coffee in the finish. Although relatively strong, the chocolate flavors are too much like Hersheys milk chocolate and not enough like a fine dark chocolate.

M - near medium body; creamy smooth; low carbonation.

O - One of the most chocolate flavored beers I've tried. I appreciated the brewer's boldness but this brew may have gone too far with the cocoa for some. I found the level fine but was disappointed with the particular quality of the chocolate flavor and the fact that the flavors did not gel as well as one might hope. Should work well as a dessert beer.

Growler shared by Ding - thanks!

Pours a dark brown color with a half-finger light brown head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of a strong combination of dark and milk chocolate. Not cocoa nibs, not chocolate malts, just chocolate.

Tastes similar to how it smells however the flavor is maltier than the aroma lets on. Chocolate malt flavors with light hints of roastiness up front sweeten midway through the sip. The ending is mildly bitter leaving hints of chocolate lingering on the palate.

Mouthfeel is alright. It's got a slightly thinner than average body with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I finished my glass however I'm not sure about another.

Overall I have to say that the first half of my glass went down quickly then the flavors began to wear on me. It tastes slightly as though the chocolate was piped in as an adjunct though it's still solidly drinkable. Worth a shot if you like chocolate however it lacks the body of some other intensely chocolate beers (think Choklat) to make it very good.
