Pours a flat black color with no head. There are a few islands of bubbles over top, but other than that and the ring of white around the edge of the top there is nothing in terms of head. I'd like a little more head and a little more life in this beer. The aroma is strong on the chocolate. There is a bit of roasted malt behind it, but the chocolate dominates. The flavor is less appealing than the aroma. It starts with a strong burnt malt flavor, like the mash may have been scortched the ashyness is so strong. From there it moves into a somewhat chemical-chocolate flavor, that fades to a mellow combination of roasted malt and chocolate. The finish on this beer is really nice, but what leads into it is not all that fantastic. Moutfeel is moderately thick with a pretty weak carbonation. This one would benefit by having some more body to it. The carbonation is where I would expect. Overall, this one is not doing it for me. The harshness of the burnt character and the sweetness of the chocolate don't play well together. Its not the worst chocolate beer I have had, but I wouldn't go for it again.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown color, bordering on black, with a two finger head of tan colored foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of a roasted malt smell with a good deal of a milk chocolate smell. Adding to the darker aromas are some aromas of coffee. There are big aromas of a caramel, vanilla, and a cream smell there as well, which overall create a very sweet, milk chocolaty smell.

Taste – The taste begins with a sweet milk chocolate and caramel flavor with a moderate amount of a roasted flavor. These flavors create a base for the brew remaining relatively constant throughout the taste with the caramel fading ever so slightly but being replaced by a little bit of vanilla sweetness. All while these transitions occur, so too do some more bitter coffee and earthy flavors come to the tongue. With the roast intensifying ever so slightly, and a bit of a grainy flavor coming to the tongue, one is left with a somewhat surprisingly drier, but still robustly darker chocolate flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side with a carbonation level that is on the average side as well. A bit of a thicker body and a lower carbonation level may have been slightly more fitting for the style, fitting the darker chocolate and more surprisingly drier roasted flavors of the brew more nicely.

Overall – A decent chocolate brew that was surprisingly dry in light of its aroma. Nothing too exceptional, but a nice try and a decent choice (in light of its price) for a darker and more drinkable chocolate stout.

12 oz. bottle poured into a nonic.

Appearance: Pours a solid black with a quarter-inch tan head that recedes quickly. Almost no lacing.

Aroma: Smells like baking chocolate with some hop bitterness and some black coffee.

Taste: This is a decent chocolate stout, but the taste doesn't blow me away. The taste follows the nose, with lots of dark baking chocolate and black coffee leading the way. There's also some hoppy, chocolatey bitterness up front. Some sweetness on the finish. Definitely more of a bitter chocolate stout than a sweet stout.

Mouthfeel: It's a little thin for a stout, but not to the point where it's watery.

Overall: Decent chocolate stout. There's a lot of chocolate and coffee stouts out there and this one doesn't distinguish itself as a must-drink, but it's a solid dessert beer option.

Pours a pretty well black color, with ruby highlights. Massive head of tan bubbles here, with fine loopy lace.

Nose is delightful chocolate, no mistake about it. It's lovely, sweet, and appealing.

Taste is, appropriately, chocolate above all else. I get the milk chocolate goodness all over, with a brief finish of bittersweet completing the journey. This one definitely delivers what it promises, and is as superb a "chocolate stout" as I've ever had.

Appearance: Jet black with little to almost no head.

Smell: The smell may have been the best part with a super chocolatey nose.

Taste: Dark chocolate malts very prominent and a slightly bitter coffee bean taste, but a very smooth sweet finish. surprisingly not very heavy.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth with velvety creamy chocolate.

Overall: This was a pretty damn good beer but definitely not the best chocolate stout out there. Still impressed with the smoothness and drink ability.
