Leviathan Baltic Porter is a dark, strong beer of considerable complexity. Brewed with a highly alcohol-tolerant strain of lager yeast, it has a smooth, full flavor with dark fruit and licorice notes in the aroma. De-husked roasted malt lends a dark chocolate character without being sharp or harsh. Raw sugar and dark crystal malt give some raisin and molasses notes while East Kent Goldings hops make for a long, earthy finish.

Picked up a four pack from the brewery in South Boston during a tasting.
A: Body is dark brown with amber highlights at the top and bottom of the glass. Thin (less than one finger) grayish, light brown head consisting of small carbonation bubbles. Very little lacing & retention.
S: Sweet roasted malts, toffee, light scent of caramel, some alcohol detectable. Then notes of coffee milk or coffee ice cream emerge. Really nice.
T & M: Big, aggressive first sip--carbonation and alcohol-heavy coffee taste. As it breathes it becomes a little more nuanced, delivering chocolate and dark cherry notes. Light-to-medium bodied but fizzy, which leads to some quality belching. Alcohol warmth comes through near the end of the sip and in the aftertaste.
D: I really like the effort Harpoon is putting into this series, attempting to branch out to new styles. In the future, this won't be the beer I go for when I crave a baltic porter, but it does as admirable job engaging with what this style does well--roasted, sweet taste, velvety mouthfeel, and big alcohol.

Someone was generous enough to leave this at a backcountry lodge for me to enjoy. If that was someone on BA, I appreciate your kindness.
Poured jet black. Chocolate and roasted malt flavors. Any booziness noted by other reviewers has mellowed out in the aging.
It was a genuinely exceptional beer, and I wish I could get my hands on another bottle or two.
