Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is brewed with our proprietary yeast – the same yeast we’ve used since first brewing Harpoon Ale – and some interesting hop varieties. The combination of Pale, Rye, Caramel 60, Flaked Rye, and Vienna yield a complex malt body that stands up to the spiciness of the rye and the pronounced hop flavor. The rye also adds a reddish hue to the beer. The kettle additions of Centennial, Apollo, and Chinook, and the dry hop addition of Falconer’s Flight add a multidimensional hop character.

Picked up today chilled. Best by Date of: 9/15/11. Poured into a SA perfect pint glass.

A- Pours a soft brass hay hue. Sits transparent in glass with the faintest of copper tint. A nice soft white head forms and sits thin to cap the surface. OK lacing.

S- Smells like the typical Harpoon blend of hops (think their IPA and spring seasonal). Aroma is mild overall. A blend of floral and dirty/ earthy hops. A slight sweetness is present. I'm worried...

T- Quite different then the aroma would indicate. A sharp burst of spicy and piney hops. Body has a mild malt character, but very hop forward. The notes in the aroma comes in the finish and lingers.

M- The hops are potent and are very sharp on tongue, almost like a slight ripping feel on front with the first sip. The feel is sharp and dry, much different then their standard IPA. A medium-high flavor brew with the body of medium. The bitterness lingers well and stays on palate just enough to make you need another sip. Really nice, light and clean.

O- Harpoon did good with this Rye IPA. I am pleasantly surprised at how hoppy this brew is. I like this more then their regular IPA easily. Drinks very nicely. I wish it was cheaper ($7.50), but glad I tried it. I would get on tap if nothing else amazing available or priced well.

12 ounce bottle -> snifter

A - clear medium amber with a two inch white head, low retention, and average lacing.

S - citrus, grass, bread, earthy notes

T - Caramel malt dominates upfront with a very grapefruit citrus flavor. The finish is fairly bitter but nice with the expected rye profile.

M - medium thick with average carbonation

O - pretty good offering from Harpoon.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Best by 01/15/14, so about 2.5 months past its prime.

A: Pours a clear copper with an average off white head. Not very much visible carbonation in the body. Leaves spots of lacing on the glass as I drink.

S: Malt is a bit more pronounced in the aroma than your typical IPA, but that I would imagine is due in part to it being expired.

T: Flavors blend together nicely in this one, sure the hops have faded a bit but the rye spice flavor is coming out very nicely. Almost more like an amber ale at this stage.

M: Medium body with a mostly clean finish. Somewhat low carbonation and just a bit sticky.

Overall I'll have to revisit this one if I see it fresher. Always been a fan of beers that incorporate rye so I'm a bit partial.
