Beer added by: mostpoetsdo on 07-23-2011

Imagine a pumpkin vine wound its way in a field of barley, and a brewer harvested it all to make a beer. Add Northwestern hops and a blend of spices, and you've got UFO Pumpkin. The malt combination provides a smooth body and slightly sweet flavor, which balances perfectly with the earthy notes derived from the pure pumpkin. And like all of our UFO beers, UFO Pumpkin is unfiltered so all the wonderful flavors are right there in your glass. Cheers!

Look: Orange in color, with a fizzy, and quickly fading head.

Smell: Sweet pumpkin spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and spices. A slight touch of wheat.

Taste: Again, sweet pumpkin spices with cinnamon. Pretty much the way it should be!

Feel: A bit fizzy and high in carbonation. Kind of light bodied. (299 characters)

Poured from bottle. Appearance is cloudy orange/amber. Aroma is full of pumpkin pie spices: nutmeg, cinnamon, clove; and a bubblegum note that may be the toasted barley. Flavors match the aromas with some pumpkin flavor on top of the spices. Medium body. (254 characters)

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a pretty, golden/orange color, with a quarter of a finger of white head that quickly and completely dissolved away into nothing.

Aroma: Wow, lots of spice! Cinnamon, nutmeg, all-spice, clove, ginger and of course pumpkin! Not much in the way of malt or hops, however.

Taste: Great! Lots of pumpkin up front, along with a good malty backbone. There’s a little bit of brown sugar-like sweetness, followed by tones of spices of cinnamon, nutmeg, all-spice, clove and ginger. Finally, there is no hops bitterness to speak of, which I overall prefer.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, but with no carbonation to speak of. With an ABV of 5.9%, there is no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is another very tasty offering from Harpoon. It’s a very nicely balanced beer, and one that I’ll get again next Autumn. (890 characters)

A - Pours a golden orange, not near as bright orange as most pumpkin ales but it is advertised as unfiltered and indeed murky. Formed a 3/4 finger of slightly tan and quickly dissipating head. No lacing.
S - Smells more like a Belgian golden ale such as Duvel than a pumpkin ale. Not getting much spice here.
T - Upfront there is a bite of carbonation and just a beery beer taste, however, a few seconds into the development and wonderful warm pumpkin, cinnamon, ginger bread, nutmeg, allspice and clove develop sweetly. This beers all about the late development and aftertaste.
O - A very good pumpkin ale. A little iffy on the initial upfront development, but a prime example of the pumpkin ale style at the tail end.
V - Good value, 8 bucks a six pack. (759 characters)

12-oz bottle into wheat beer glass

A - 4-5 fingers off-white foam over a cloudy body of golden amber;high in visible carbonation

S - spice, pumpkin, caramel sweetness; very pleasant

T - spice, pumpkin, grain, grassy notes, finishes dry; flavors are well-balanced

M - smooth, sticky medium body; medium/high carbonation

O - a very decent pumpkin ale (353 characters)

look: 3 | smell: 2.5 | taste: 2 | feel: 2.5 | overall: 2.25

A - A dirty orange color, almost looking like apple cider, slightly cloudy; a 1/2 inch off-white head settles to the rim, no lacing, a moderate level of carbonation can be seen feeding the last of the head, which ultimately disappears completely
S - Not too much going on here, very mild apple and spice, but all very slight
T - An odd bitterness to this beer that I didn't particularly care for, the slightest hint of pumpkin is there, but only if you're trying to find it; a very odd (not good) aftertaste
F - Fizzy and a bit thin, slightly dry
O - I tried, but either Pumpkin beers are just a seasonal novelty to make cool bottle labels or pumpkins were just not meant for making beer. I will continue to try these, but I have found very, very few that are worth a damn. (774 characters)

Appearance: Cloudy orange. Left little to no head.
Smell: Spice, pumpkin, cinnamon, and a tart citrus scent.
Taste: Pumpkin pie. Just like the smell.

This is so good. It's a liquid pumpkin pie, and that's a good thing. Much better than what I was expecting. I will get this again next year. (294 characters)

Drank from a 12 fl oz bottle
Enjoy by 02/15/15
Served in a pint glass
Thanks to Jess and David for giving us this beer as part of a mixed six-pack.

The beer poured a hazy, medium amber color and was topped by and inch tall, sudsy, off white crown that quickly fell to a thin ring. No lacing whatsoever.

The aroma was spicy and quite bright for the style. Ginger was most noticeable. Pumpkin pie spices came through as well. Cinnamon was detectable. Touch of clove and allspice.

The flavor profile mimicked the nose. Lots of bright ginger root and pumpkin pie spice notes on the front end. The beer was anchored by a dry, crackery malt base. Some wheaty and lemony notes came through in the center. Slightly tart. The beer turned dry and earthy on the finish. A touch bitter.

The mouthfeel was medium bodied. Crisp and snappy. The liquid contained a fine, soft, frothy effervescence.

I thought this beer was going to be a straightforward pumpkin ale but, as the UFO name might indicate, it seemed more like a pumpkin ale/wheat beer hybrid. While many people complain about pumpkin ales coming out earlier and earlier in the season, this beer might serve as a nice transition into autumn. (1,191 characters)

Loved this. Unfiltered seems the way to go with Veggie beers.

A: Hazed orange amber, great head retention, and lacing.

S: Spice, pumpkin meat, pumpkin pie, fall leaves and grass. Good intensity.

T: Follows smell, with smooth, crisp, toasted grain, spice, pumpkin meat, yeast, spice,

F: Medium, comforting, semi-dry.

O: A best pumpkin beer, must try. (360 characters)

Pours a cloudy orange colour with a very quickly dissapating head.

Has a nice Pumpkin spice smell with a hoppy bitterness. Not overly sweet...very inviting bouquet.

Taste is much sweeter than the smell would indicate. Tastes almost like a piece of pumpkin pie....very slight hop bitterness in the end...

The mouthfeel is good....not too watery and not overly thick.

Overall this beer is great...perfect for the season. Will get it again. (443 characters)

I loved the look of this beer. A beautiful hazy orange with a white head.

Smells of pumpkin pie spices. I pick up cinnamon.
The aroma is very nice and not overpowering with the spices.

The flavor is of sweet malts, pumpkin and a nice spicy finish.
Very little bitterness.

I would say medium bodied but light and easy drinking for a pumpkin ale.

A great beer for the fall season.
I would enjoy this with Thanksgiving diner or a turkey sandwich. (450 characters)

probably my favorite pumpkin beer..strong notes of pumpkin
but not too much of the cinnamon flavor. Looks on the darker side of ales, smell has a pumpkin aroma..altogether a great pumpkin ale, and a new found seasonal favorite (226 characters)

M- sour malts and grain

Glass Used: nonic

Appearance: Orange-light copper body, whipped egg white foamy head. Leaves layered lacing behind as the head deflates.

Smell: Spicy cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg a wee bit of clove followed up with some vegetal gourd notes & sweet malts.

Taste: A good dose of sweet malts followed by the familiar, but subdued pumpkin and spice flavors. Nice.

Mouthfeel: Very soft & aqueous on the tongue. Easy drinking.

Overall: I was rather surprised by this pumpkin ale. It's a medium flavored, easy drinking pumpkin beer. Not overly sweet or spiced. While I prefer a more aggressive approach, I would definitely recommend this one for those looking to try their first pumpkin beer. (688 characters)

a beautiful head followed by picture perfect lacing. This brew has a spicey nose that follows through on the pallet with a profile of predominantly cinnamon, with more reserved pumpkin essence.earthy, and not overly sweet, but with a serious spice punch.

not the best pumpkin beer by far, but a good example that runs spice forward and shows what the style is about. Wish there was more pumpkin and less spice, but it works. (425 characters)

12 oz. bottle poured into a Burley Oak snifter

A: Hazy dirty blonde copper, with no head or lacing.

S: Mostly pumpkin and light on the spice.

T: Mild pumpkin flavor, that is just plain malt and some spice.

M: Smooth, slightly coarse carbonation throughout.

O: Again, more towards the bottom of the pack for pumpkin beers. (333 characters)

Harpoon is one of my local favorite breweries, and always puts out a wonderful product. And when they put out a seasonal offering, being local always makes for a fresh, tasty beer.

A: Bubble, bubble, no toil, no trouble. A hazy, cloudy wonderful orange color with a substantial head and lasting lacing.

S: Balanced spicy aroma, with cinnamon and pumpkin making its presence known.

T: Pumpkin and spice and everything nice! The flavors of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and sweet malt come blasting through. A more balanced flavor than most pumpkin ales on the market.

M: A nice medium body, with wonderful carbonation. No warmth from the 5.9 at all.

D: This is the only area where you need to beware. This offering can catch up to your taste buds if you aren't ready for it. Unlike most pumpkin ales, you will feel comfortable enjoying more than the usual of these. But, the spicy flavor can be overpowering in the end if you aren't ready.

Very nice seasonal offering! (971 characters)

Pours out a cloudy amber with a full, thick head. Smells primarily of pie spice, leaning towards cinnamon. Flavor is pumpkin and pie spice forwarded. The cinnamon stands out above all else. Like dipping your finger into a bowl of cinnamon sugar, but not overly sweet. Mild bitterness balances well. Fluffy mouthfeel. One of the better pumpkin beers in the more spice forwarded category. (393 characters)

12 ounce bottle, stamp on bottle says enjoy by 02/15/14. Guess I can't complain, a buddy gave me a bottle of this a couple weeks ago so it was free. And I'm in the mood for a pumpkin beer so might was well try it! Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a cloudy orange/amber color with some sediment floaties noticeable. There's also an inch and a half off-white head with good retention, along with a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like pumpkin spices and pumpkin. The taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes like pumpkin spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves), pumpkin, and some bready malt. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit creamy, smooth and easy to drink. I liked this brew, hopefully this upcoming fall I'll try a fresher batch of this! (767 characters)

Pumpkin beer in March? Yes - picked up of a variety pack. Poured into a sam adams custom glass, color is orange, copper, light amber, very effervescent, head presents but dissipates quickly.

Smell is light spice, light malt, spice profile is some ginger, allspice - not overdone.

Taste is light pale malt, some toast, biscuit, wheat, then some lighter spices, ginger, allspice, cinnamon and maybe some vanilla.

Mouthfeel was sharp, crisp at first, the settled as it warmed and the carbonation dissipated creating a more pleasing presence. Flavors present on the tongue and then linger on the sides of the mouth.

Overall, a very good, pretty clean and good tasting pumpkin ale. nice to see the flavors hold up from the fall. (727 characters)

I really like the murky, cloudy and unfiltered quality of this pumpkin as it gives it a more natural earthy tone. The color was bit brighter than most Pumpkin ales with a glowing yellow/orange. The head was fizzy but it congealed to a thick cloud.

The scent was very spicy cinnamon, nutmeg and a bready malt. The spiciness is rich and aromatic with a touch of pepper and clove.

The flavor is more gourd and malt with undertones of cinnamon and nutmeg. The flavors are not as spicy as the scent but they are balanced well.

The feel is bubbly and light with an effervescent, and lively spirit. This carbonated bubbling is more alive than lifting flavor from the palate. (670 characters)

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 12/15/2013. Pours hazy orange amber color with a 1 finger foamy white head with horrible retention, that reduces to a ring of lace quickly. Minimal lacing clings on the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of pumpkin, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger, wheat, bread, banana, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice aromas with prominent spice/yeast ester notes and moderate malt balance; with good strength. Taste of pumpkin, cinnamon, gingerbread, nutmeg, clove, wheat, brown sugar, light banana, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of pumpkin, cinnamon, gingerbread, nutmeg, clove, brown sugar, wheat, light banana, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good balance, robustness, and complexity of malt, spice, and yeast ester flavors; with a good sweetness/spice balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy and smooth mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is good pumpkin ale. Good balance and robustness of pumpkin, malt, and spice flavors; and very smooth to drink. A pleasantly enjoyable offering. (1,218 characters)

Per the website, this is a beer made with German Munich and Vienna malt, and the brewery makes a big deal about it being unfiltered. Pumpkins and unnamed spices round out the recipe.

Aroma: Nutmeg, cinnamon and actual pumpkin abound in the aroma. No hop scents. I get a slightly fruity ester profile that accentuates the sweet malt.

Appearance: Copper in color with a slight haze (as promised). A bit of sediment despite smooth pour. There is very minimal head to this beer and what is present disappears quickly.

Flavor: Sweet maltiness with a medium body. I get some nutmeg and possibly vanilla in the middle of the taste. As it warms up I taste pumpkin flesh and a hint of ginger. Balanced to the malty side and lacks the astringency I see in many pumpkin beers.

Overall: A very well balanced beer. This comes off as malt balanced but not overly sweet, with some pumpkin pie spices present. Some complexity here, and I get a true pumpkin aroma and flavor to the beer--one of only three I've found so far in my tastings. Low carbonation hurts it a bit. I would happily drink more of this if I could find it! (1,113 characters)

Pours a light copper with a finger of head that dissipated fairly quickly and left minimal lacing. The nose has both pumpkin and spice notes. The flavor profile also contains pumpkin along with a mildly spicy finish. Cinnamon flavor stands out at the very end of this nicely constructed, but light pumpkin ale. (310 characters)
