Pumpkin Ale |  5.90% ABV

Availability: Fall

Notes/Commercial Description:
Imagine a pumpkin vine wound its way in a field of barley, and a brewer harvested it all to make a beer. Add Northwestern hops and a blend of spices, and you've got UFO Pumpkin. The malt combination provides a smooth body and slightly sweet flavor, which balances perfectly with the earthy notes derived from the pure pumpkin. And like all of our UFO beers, UFO Pumpkin is unfiltered so all the wonderful flavors are right there in your glass. Cheers!

Pumpkin beer in March? Yes - picked up of a variety pack. Poured into a sam adams custom glass, color is orange, copper, light amber, very effervescent, head presents but dissipates quickly.

Smell is light spice, light malt, spice profile is some ginger, allspice - not overdone.

Taste is light pale malt, some toast, biscuit, wheat, then some lighter spices, ginger, allspice, cinnamon and maybe some vanilla.

Mouthfeel was sharp, crisp at first, the settled as it warmed and the carbonation dissipated creating a more pleasing presence. Flavors present on the tongue and then linger on the sides of the mouth.

Overall, a very good, pretty clean and good tasting pumpkin ale. nice to see the flavors hold up from the fall.

I really like the murky, cloudy and unfiltered quality of this pumpkin as it gives it a more natural earthy tone. The color was bit brighter than most Pumpkin ales with a glowing yellow/orange. The head was fizzy but it congealed to a thick cloud.

The scent was very spicy cinnamon, nutmeg and a bready malt. The spiciness is rich and aromatic with a touch of pepper and clove.

The flavor is more gourd and malt with undertones of cinnamon and nutmeg. The flavors are not as spicy as the scent but they are balanced well.

The feel is bubbly and light with an effervescent, and lively spirit. This carbonated bubbling is more alive than lifting flavor from the palate.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 12/15/2013. Pours hazy orange amber color with a 1 finger foamy white head with horrible retention, that reduces to a ring of lace quickly. Minimal lacing clings on the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of pumpkin, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger, wheat, bread, banana, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice aromas with prominent spice/yeast ester notes and moderate malt balance; with good strength. Taste of pumpkin, cinnamon, gingerbread, nutmeg, clove, wheat, brown sugar, light banana, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of pumpkin, cinnamon, gingerbread, nutmeg, clove, brown sugar, wheat, light banana, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good balance, robustness, and complexity of malt, spice, and yeast ester flavors; with a good sweetness/spice balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy and smooth mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is good pumpkin ale. Good balance and robustness of pumpkin, malt, and spice flavors; and very smooth to drink. A pleasantly enjoyable offering.

Per the website, this is a beer made with German Munich and Vienna malt, and the brewery makes a big deal about it being unfiltered. Pumpkins and unnamed spices round out the recipe.

Aroma: Nutmeg, cinnamon and actual pumpkin abound in the aroma. No hop scents. I get a slightly fruity ester profile that accentuates the sweet malt.

Appearance: Copper in color with a slight haze (as promised). A bit of sediment despite smooth pour. There is very minimal head to this beer and what is present disappears quickly.

Flavor: Sweet maltiness with a medium body. I get some nutmeg and possibly vanilla in the middle of the taste. As it warms up I taste pumpkin flesh and a hint of ginger. Balanced to the malty side and lacks the astringency I see in many pumpkin beers.

Overall: A very well balanced beer. This comes off as malt balanced but not overly sweet, with some pumpkin pie spices present. Some complexity here, and I get a true pumpkin aroma and flavor to the beer--one of only three I've found so far in my tastings. Low carbonation hurts it a bit. I would happily drink more of this if I could find it!

Pours a light copper with a finger of head that dissipated fairly quickly and left minimal lacing. The nose has both pumpkin and spice notes. The flavor profile also contains pumpkin along with a mildly spicy finish. Cinnamon flavor stands out at the very end of this nicely constructed, but light pumpkin ale.

Pours very hazy orange golden color with a ring of head that last to the end. The smell is vegtable pumpkin and spice. The taste starts with a good bite from the spice and just a hit of pumpkin. Not to sweet moslty a clove and nutmeg story with yeast wheat finish. Mouthfeel is medium. A decent beer and a top 5 when it comes to pumpkin beers.

12 oz bottle poured into a big wheat beer glass.

A - very hazy. Dull orange color. Not as much head as I would expect.

N - malts and typical pumpkin spices. Cloves.

T - pumpkin spices again. Not too sweet, but sweet enough. No bitterness.

M - I like the mouthfeel. Nice tingle. Good carbonation.

12 oz can, bottom dated BB 15 Jan., 2014, served in a snifter.

A vigorous pour roused a moderate size bone-colored head that had limited retention. Nice, cloudy, orange-amber body.

Well balanced flavor with the wheat, pumpkin pulp and spicing all coming out clearly, and a hint of hops too.

edium-light body is a touch watery and not as soft as hoped.

O: nice, easy drinking wheat-based pumpkin beer.

Presentation: Label is pretty plain with a nice fall color scheme. The front label giving a bit of brewery info and a small description of the beer. Neck label shows the beer in a weizen glass.

Appearance: An aggressive pour from its 12oz brown bottle into a 16oz imperial pint led to a 3 finger off white slightly tan head of medium density atop a very hazy brownish orange colored beer that has noticeable carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass. Excellent retention at 5min 59sec before fading to a thick ring and coating with excellent lacing.

Smell/Aroma: Smells of clove, nutmeg, and pumpkin that has a definite Hefeweizen tone to the aroma. Also has a nice sweet malt aroma.

Flavor/Taste: Taste is heavy on pumpkin and clove with a bit of nutmeg and a pepper bite. Again, as in the aroma, has hefeweizen characteristics on the palette with hints of banana and light fruits. Midpoint has a nice biscuit bready malt flavor accompanied by pumpkin. Back end is dominated by pumpkin and spices with a pumpkin aftertaste.

MouthFeel/Drinkability: On the thick sided of medium bodied with a smooth slightly creamy mouthfeel. Very drinkable, refreshing, and tasty.

Overall/Comments: A very good pumpkin ale overall that has a nice flavor profile but is not a real stand out. The unfiltered aspect added a bit of intrigue to this offering. Classified as a Pumpkin Ale @ 5.9% ABV. Consumed 10/13/2013.

I originally poured this beer a bit too cold. As I let it sit I could taste and smell the flavors and spices much better.

A- Amber and clouded with a small white head. The unfiltered process makes it look thicker than you would think.

S- Nice spice and clove aroma. Not overpowering. Don't expect a cider.

T- Carbonation with spice on the foretaste on the front of the tongue and cloves on the aftertaste sitting on the sides of your tongue.

M- Carbonated and light. Very easy to drink.

O- I'm not much of a pumpkin ale drinker. Every other pumpkin ale I've drank has always been thick and spicy but this was a different experience and actually quite enjoyable. I would describe it like a light pumpkin sponge cake kind of beer.

Enjoyed this one outside, on a beautiful and sunny fall day, surrounded by swirling fall leaves, right after taking the family pumpkin picking. The atmosphere couldn't have been better. The beer is a hazy, orange amber color and the head is faint and small. The spice smell is heavy on cinnamon, and a touch of clove. Some malt in the aroma, but the spice is serious. Balanced, and not too sweet. Similar flavor to the smell. Smooth and ful body. Satisfying for the weather. Nice, but not exceptional.

Pours a hazed orange color. White head and a bit of lacing.
Aroma of pumpkin spices, cinnamon, allspice and pumpkin. The smell is fairly strong and is right for the season. In the taste, pumpkin, with sweet and vegetable notes, pumpkin pie flavor. Small bitterness and coarse leafy hop character. Medium bodied feel with lingering pumpkin pie flavor. Overall, this is a nice little pumpkin ale.

An aggressive pour of Harpoon's UFO Pumpkin produces a murky tawny body and a thick just-slightly-off-white head. The head falls a bit faster than it should, but it does leave behind a crown of appealingly sticky lace on top of the brew. A bit of lace clings to the sides of the glass along the rim. A few streams of bubbles rise lazily towards the surface. By the time the bubbles get to the top, there's at least 3/4 an inch between them. I like the hazy brew, the sticky head, and the mild fizz.

The nose is spice-forward, but toasted notes do come through. The blurb tells me that this beer's flavors derive from Noble hops, Munich and Vienna malts, and pumpkin pie spices. But if I didn't know better, I'd say this beer is a Hefeweizen. I wonder if Hefeweizen yeast has been used. In any case, clove dominates and is followed by a bit of banana and toasted biscuits.

The beer's flavors take longer to develop on the palate than I expected. Up front are cloves, nutmeg, allspice, and cinnamon. Then come muted tastes of toasted biscuits and ripe fruits (bananas and apricots come to mind). I don't pick up the fullness or richness that pumpkin is supposed to contribute. Then the bittering hops assert themselves, and are immediately followed by some alcoholic warmth. This is a crisp Pumpkin Ale: Hops and alcohol cut the already-mild malty sweetness and transform the fruity flavors from over-ripe to fermented. As the bottle empties, the alcohol moves into an increasingly dominant position. In the final sip, the balance and flavors of the first sips are nowhere to be found.

The beer is sharper on the palate than I expected, but that's not a bad thing. In fact, the sharpness highlights the bite of the spices and the crisp hoppy bitterness, which are the stars of this beer. A more viscous mouthfeel might have felt out of place when considered in relation to the beer's light malt and thin body.

UFO Pumpkin is crisper than most of the Pumpkin Ales I've had. I'd say there's too much alcohol in the brew, and that our friends in Boston would do well to increase the beer's malty backbone. I'd also say that if pumpkin has been used, its characteristic richness and fullness aren't palpable. That said, it was refreshing (in more ways than one!) to drink a crisp pumpkin ale, which are usually richer and fuller than this one.

I won't drink this again, but I'm glad I tried it. Onward...

Harpoon UFO Pumpkin
12 oz bottle

Surprisingly good. For the most part Harpoon has left me "so-so" but this pumpkin beer is excellent.

Its cloudy orange beneath a short white head that drops but holds a solid surface covering (thin, but complete). It also offers fairly good lacing with splashes and streaks like fake halloween cobwebs (y'now, in the spirit of things).

The aroma is all about pumpkin spice - heavy on All-spice. Fruity. Apple pie? Some ginger. Slightly different than usual. Nutmeg... Over-spiced? It's loaded, yet it doesn't overwhelm.

The flavor follows the aroma. It's heavily spiced but somehow not overbearing. Perhaps because the bitterness is restrained, perhaps because the way that they've spiced it hasn't left it with any harsh notes. Malt comes through but is basically a base for the spice. Definitely a "pumpkin spice" beer.

In the mouth it's smooth with a medium body and a moderate carbonation.

Overall it's a pretty nice "pumpkin spice" beer. I'd imagine that you could drink a few of these despite its inherent character. Well done.

12 ounce bottle, w/o freshness/bottling indication provided.

Pours lightly hazed light brown amber. Minor off white head, quickly departs. Leaves a delicate film, collar and just minor spots of lacing.

Sweet malt nose with some mild cinnamon and typical fall spicing.

On the lighter and thinner side of the pumpkin beer spectrum. Subtle spicing and more sweet malts. Ehhhh, middle of the road at best

Bought a six pack at Table and Vine. Appearance has a nice golden amber view. It poured a medium head but good retention. Aromas were definitely festive for me. My wife could smell the beer from a mile away and she said it smelled like biscuits. Extra aromas included spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and of course the pumpkin smell. Delicious taste with a mix of that pumpkin flavoring with malts. Mouthfeel had a decent carbonation with a slight crispness. Overall, a really good, festive drink.

A: Hazy, pale orange, in the light it looks more orange but in ambient light it has an odd pale golden brown color, no head

S: Smells really good, just like fall, spices and a light bready sweetness

O: Let me say that I do not like pumpkin ales. They are always too harsh and/or cloying and spicy for me. However, this beer really come across well to me. Less is definitely more with this style. Any amount of pumpkin spice will stand out compared to a typical beer so don't overdo it.

Pours a hazy but bright orange colour with a limited off-white head that disappears quickly. Earthy aroma of spices and fruit with a respectable malt backbone. The flavour has a real depth to it, with light malts complementing the gourd elements. Harpoon Brewery - UFO Pumpkin, poured into a UFO hefeweizen glass.

Look - Pours a hazy copper amber with a thick foamy head that retains a little but mostly dissipates quickly. Great chunky lacing but it vanishes quickly.

Smell - Pumpkin abound here, some sour wheatiness underneath but pumpkin is 90% of the aroma with some spice alongside.

Taste - Tons of spice with pumpkin coming in after, then cinnamon and nutmeg.

Mouthfeel - Medium to heavier body, slightly sticky, not super boozy or anything. Drinkability is good but not great, it's thick and hearty but not lick your lips quality.

Overall - Interestingly this brew was completely different in a glass as opposed to right out of the bottle. In the bottle the drinkability was somewhat lower but it tasted like pumpkin pie, which was pretty cool I am not really a fan of pumpkin beers or fruit beers in general, but this brew was respectably done.

A hazy copper with a nice white, long-lasting head. Smells of cloves, cinnamon and vanilla. Very good taste. It has a nice banana/clove profile from the hefeweizen that blends smoothly into the light pumpkin spice: clove, cinnamon, vanilla notes. Mouthfeel is silky and medium bodied.

Overall-- a very nice pumpkin beer. The hefeweizen wasn't a style that I thought would take to spices well, but this one does quite nicely. Very smooth and easy to drink and not overspiced.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – Pours a rather hazy orange amber color with a big billowy white head. The head fades rather fast leaving a light level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is of sweet caramel and roasted pumpkin. Mixed with these aromas are a good deal of cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. Overall spicy and pumpkin like.

Taste - The taste begins with a rather sweeter caramel, a bit of wheat bread and more light to moderate roasted pumpkin taste. These flavors create a base for the brew with a spice flavor of cinnamon and nutmeg soon come to the tongue with the cinnamon getting stronger as the taste advances. A little bit of a citrus lemon taste joins the flavor profile at the end leaving a pumpkin and citrus sweet wheat flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average to slightly thinner side for a beer of 5.9 % with a medium level of carbonation for the style. Not a bad overall feel for the brew and rather appropriate for the style.

Overall- A decent pumpkin brew but nothing out of the ordinary. Easy drinking and a bit on the spicier side with a somewhat lighter pumpkin flavor overall.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle with an "Enjoy By" date of 12/15/13 stamped on the bottle neck glass. Unfiltered, pours a cloudy amber orange with a medium head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is the best pumpkin ale this year, possibly best that I've experienced. Truly just like freshly baked pumpkin pie. Essence of pumpkin, vanilla, wheat pie crust and cinnamon and nutmeg spice. Taste is mainly sweet pumpkin with nutmeg, vanilla and cinnamon notes. A complex array of flavors with small hop presence to balance. The spiced finish lingers for a longtime.

Update on 9/5/13: I've had several of these this year after picking up a case and have decided this is the my favorite pumpkin ale of 2013. My guests from California agree.
