Notes/Commercial Description:
Imagine a pumpkin vine wound its way in a field of barley, and a brewer harvested it all to make a beer. Add Northwestern hops and a blend of spices, and you've got UFO Pumpkin. The malt combination provides a smooth body and slightly sweet flavor, which balances perfectly with the earthy notes derived from the pure pumpkin. And like all of our UFO beers, UFO Pumpkin is unfiltered so all the wonderful flavors are right there in your glass. Cheers!

Into a pint glass:

A: hazy orange colored body that leaves some ringy lacing. A decent one finger white head appears and lasts for about a good minute before slowly dieing into the body. No carbonation is seen rising.

S: pumpkin up front with a good combination of nutmeg, clove, and ginger gently backing it up.

T: pretty much the same.

M: medium and has no harshness on the tongue, very smooth. I would say this is a very drinkable beer.

O: this is a pumpkin ale I would come back to.

Appearance: Bright orange with lots of carbonation. Not much lacing or foam to speak of.

Smell: Heavy nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon. A bit peppery as well.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Strong, bitter cloves and hops. Definitely pumpkin, and definitely beery. This tastes like an actual pumpkin pie instead of just the spices. Clean mouthfeel.

Overall Drinkability: A good pumpkin ale.

Pumpkin orange color with some haze. Tight head keeps at a minimal level. 3.0

Nutmeg and light pumpkin. Some allspice and cinnamon lingering. Slight fishy smell permeates the spice fiesta. Smells semi-dry. 3.5

True pumpkin flavor with some dominating cinnamon and nutmeg. Light coriander, wheat, and peppery spice. Affirms bitter with a dusty spice finish. Veggie/squash middle with some toastiness. Not bad. 3.5

Light/medium body with a feisty carb. Puts away easy. 3.5

Perhaps the best of the UFO series. Not particularly unique, quite drinkable and appropriate for style. 4.0

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a light cloudy copper, with a light ring of white foam. Smells of strong cinammon, brown sugar, and pumpkin. Taste is a light pumpkin, thin bodied, some bittering, but a relative clean finish. The flavor is there, but not weighty. Nothing overpowering, the blend works quite well.

Very good.

Got this when i decided to try a new pumpkin beer. Bought a 6 pack of bottles, poured into a sam adams glass.

A: pours a hazy orange although it is a slightly lighter orange then most pumpkin beers i have tried. A healthy head forms at the top of the glass then quickly fizzles into a very thin lace.

S: the smell is above average, heavier than most on the pumpkin, light on spices. The aroma has notes of allspice, cinnamon, and heavy cloves.

T: the taste is pretty average. lighter than i was expecting though the pumpkin notes do set in pretty well. Light on spices typical of the style.

M: Start is watery and smooth. The spices are light on the tongue but well balanced. Aftertaste is heavier on hops and finishes dry which is a surprise.

O: Overall i would say this is a slightly above average beer. Pretty good but not the kind you run to the store and snag before it runs out. Definitely something i could see myself drinking a few of in a row without being too overwhelming. Not bad for a newcomer to the style.

I haven’t had a Harpoon beer in a long while, but this year, I got the urge to grab up every different pumpkin ale within my reach. Cheers to unfiltered beer!

This beer is good for a couple months more (“BEST BY 12/15/12”).

A: As always for an unfiltered ale, it’s hazy, this time with a fitting burnt-orange hue. And at first pour, it seems like there’s going to be that typical unfiltered head, too – thick, billowing quickly from the bottom of the glass – but not such luck. What’s there is a short head of tan bubbles that fizzle quickly to nothing more than a barely-there layer on top of the body. Minimal lacing.

S: Wow, that’s a lot of real pumpkin aroma; and, when that earthy, fleshy character is melded with a healthy dose of allspice, cinnamon, clove, and cookie dough, it gives off a palpable tone of pumpkin pie. I’ll admit, it is more of an artificial pumpkin-pie-in-a-can character, but it’s pleasing nonetheless.

T: In most ways, it’s average: moderate spice, moderate breads, moderate pumpkin. It all blends in a pale-tasting manner, a little watery and with a taste of artificial sweetener, but with a good base of allspice, pumpkin pie filling, nutmeg, and brown sugar. With that, there are also underlying malts – bready with graham cracker flavors – that hold up the otherwise shallow palate. Aftertaste actually shows some hop flavors, drying out the tongue on top of lingering tastes of light sugar-syrup.

M: Mildly and a tad thin – not too satisfying, but an easy drinker from the bottle. If you plan on kicking one of these back, though, I’d recommend letting it warm. It’s too industrial lager-like when it’s at all cold.

O:Another average pumpkin beer; in fact, this one sits right in the middle of the road for what I’ve had so far this season. I don’t think I’d try it again, though it certainly put me in the autumn spirit for the moment.

Where've I been? Not like I stopped drinking beer. My reviews had gotten curmudgeonly, I'll admit, with lots of complaints about the gentrification of the beer scene and the mindless adoration of bigness among beer geeks. But to go from so many reviews, so steadily for so long, to almost none? What made me snap?

These things don't always happen suddenly, with a bang. Sometimes you get bored or disillusioned over a long while and then something else comes along and you just let go.

So I've been drinking a lot of marzens and pumpkin beers lately. Cheap ones. Partially because I'm tired of pretending to think about beer. Partially because I want this wretched summer to end. Mostly because I don't care anymore and I'll just drink what I like.

This--this is solid. As for pumpkins, it's medium spicy and a little dry, less sweet than blue moon's, less pie-ish than Schlafly's, not as zippy or alcoholic as Pumpking. So it falls behind each of those beers, since there's nothing all that characteristic about it aside from that it's a boilerplate example of its style.

Appearance: 1/2 inch head, orangein color, hazy, high carbonation

Smell: nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin, and pumpkin spice

Taste: cinnamon, pumpkin, pumpkin spice, and slight toasted malt

Mouthfeel: sweet with slight bitterness, moderate-high carbonation, medium bodied

Overall: A nice and sessionable pumpkin beer. Nothing out of the ordinary, but certainly above average and certainly tasting like a Harpoon beer. This is one I will get again.
