This is not your traditional red ale. Leviathan Red Squared is aggressively hopped with Galaxy and Citra over a California ale yeast. The end result is an intense hop experience, with ?oral and citric notes, paired with a mellow malt bill. Some would call it imperial.

Pronounced hops dominating malts. Beer is 2012 vintage, and likely some flavors have diminished.. Can't really say that I enjoyed it, but I finished it. I don't drink enough American Ambers/Red Ales to judge it per the style.

Took a late afternoon hike in the snow, and wanted something with a warming bite to it upon my return. This offering from Harpoon, which I pulled out of my beer cellar, fit the bill nicely. With it's 9% abv it has a kick, and it also has a nice balance between the sweetness of the malt and the bitterness of the galaxy and citra hops. Absolutely Deeelicious on a snowy day!

12 oz bottle at fridge temp poured into a tulip. "2012" vintage (over 1 year old)
Pours out a deep dark orange bronze color, pretty good clarity, big dense off white colored head with very good retention and thick lacing covering most of the exposed glass.
Big malty aroma, slightly oxidized which is to be expected with age. Burnt, charred caramel malts, faded woody hops, and a bit of pine.
More malty than hoppy in the taste, but not by much, a decent balance. Lots of caramel malts, slightly burnt, a bit of a rye malt spice, woody, piney, resinous hops with some hop bitterness in the finish.
Carbonation is a bit on the lighter side. Medium to slightly heavy in body. Slightly sticky feel.
This was better than expected, I imagined the age of this beer would've have been its downfall. That being said I'm sure this was something pretty special when it was fresh.
