Dark brown body. Looks more like a stout than a pale ale.
Roasty nose. Dry nose. Smoke.
Burnt malt. Medium hoppiness. Irish dry stout puckering charcoal flavor. Unsweetened cocoa powder. Decent. Thin mouthfeel. More of an Irish stout than an american version of the black and tan. Not a great tasting beer albeit pretty easy to drink.

"With a malty sweetness, subtle hops, and a hint of smoke, this beer blends two distinct styles, Pale Ale and Stout, to make one phenomenal beer." Brewed in the style of a Black & Tan Ale. This is entry #45 of Harpoon's 100 Barrel Series, released January 2013. Available in 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft.
Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a pint glass. Served above 52º Fahrenheit.
(Appearance) Pours a frothy foamy light brown head over an opaque medium brown-red body with high clarity. Carbonation is plentiful, retention is good. Lacing is light and streaked. 4
(Smell) Notes of bready sweet caramel, pale malts with a subtle graininess, floral and mild spicy hop character. Clean, roasty smoke is faint but evident. 3.5
(Taste) Light caramel malt syrup sweetness with a creeping light roast malt over a light pale malt body. Hops provide a very mild hop flavor and a subtle earthy bitterness. A bit lighter in flavor than expected with a mild thinness, accented by the cleanliness of the drink. The flavor is enjoyable, even if too light. 3.25
(Mouthfeel) Texture is light, thin, dry. Carbonation generates a mellow carbonation for a very light and mild mouthfeel, near flat in presentation. Body is medium+ for the style, shy of medium overall. Balance is nearly even, perhaps a touch sweet over bitter with a notable lightness promoting high drinkability. Alcohol presence is light. 3.5
(Overall) Although I'd prefer to keep away from these pre-packaged black & tans, this one is fairly enjoyable, albeit expectedly thin. Very clean, well balanced, very lightly-bodied. One could certainly enjoy the bottle by itself, although to others it may leave something to be desired. I find myself craving a nice, roasty, smoky stout following this bottle without the complications of a pale ale. 3.5
