Shared 22 oz bottle.
Pours opaque black with ruby edges. Small head soon reduces to a thin ring.
Aroma: highly spiced and high ABV.
Flavor: over spiced and boozy. Starts sweet but finishes with an unpleasant bitterness.
Feel: good smooth full body by some alcohol harshness.

O: Disappointing.

The appearance was a black color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated fairly quickly. Lacing was barely there. The smell starts off with some ginger, light allspice, subtle pumpkin, light breadiness and a tad of raisin. The taste was mainly sweet with an ample sweet to spicy (ginger to all-spice-esque feel). The aftertaste is somewhat pumpkin-esque leading into a sweet to subtle sticky sort of nice pumpkin-esque finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body, as there’s a good sipping quality about this one. Carbonation feels good for a pumpkin ale (imperial, eh, okay, I get it), sure, no difference for anyone that knows anything about pumpkin ales. Overall, I went into this with low expectations and came out with a hearty hell yeah at the end.

A-almost black in appearance with a fingers worth of light tan head that disappears rather quickly to leave a thin layer of lace

S-chocolate, pumpkin, pumpkin spices, and a bit of molasses

T-taste of pumpkin and spices, chocolate sweetness and molasses and a slightly roasted finish. High ABV is not noticeable.

M-medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall maybe a bit too much spice and sweetness but overall is pretty good for a pumpkin imperial stout. After tasting this I would never have guessed it was 10.5%! Alcohol is very well hidden.

Bottle dated 2014

Appearance: Very dark brown, and appears to be clear. Lively carbonation produced a small brown head, quickly dissipating to a thin layer of fine foam. Very little lacing.

Smell: Immediate blast of dark sugar sweetness and spice - mainly nutmeg with some ginger. Some chocolate, fruity esters, and perhaps citrus peel. Alcohol very evident. Just a bit of diacetyl.

Taste: Initial flavors of caramel, chocolate malt, and dark sugar, followed by spices and a touch of hop flavor. Use of black patent malt and roasted barley is restrained, avoiding burnt tastes and dryness. Just a bit sweet, but balanced by bitterness. Alcohol is more noticeable on the roof of the mouth, rather than heat on the tongue. Very long aftertaste, sweet and spicy.

Mouthfeel: Very heavy, but smooth. Some warmth from the alcohol.

Overall: I was not sure what to expect, but Harpoon did an excellent job of combining your typical pumpkin beer with an Imperial Stout. Although I tend to prefer the traditional pumpkin pie spices of cinnamon, ginger and clove, the nutmeg produced a delightful aroma and flavor. Not really any detectable pumpkin character, but I wasn't expected much in a stout. On the sweeter side, but tempered by bittering and not at all cloying. Definitely a winner.
