Sometimes I forget about the massive variation in scale that exists within the craft beer world. Hanging around People's and Sun King and making frequent stops at Three Floyds and Millstream give me a certain idea of how big a brewery is supposed to be. Then I stumble across a place like this, located in a literal shipyard with a fleet of trucks waiting in front of a factory facade, and I remember just how much work and development goes into making a nationally recognized brand.

Years ago, when I first getting into good beer, Harpoon was the shit. It's one of those forgotten breweries, like Great Lakes and Victory, that used to be stylistic standard-bearers but have since gotten replaced several times over by the proliferation of local breweries. Go to a store now in any place that's not fucking horrible and 75% of the domestic craft selection will be from in-state. It makes sense; there's just that many breweries now. But they're all super expensive and most aren't that great. Once, not that long along, places like Harpoon helped build up the craft scene, and they did by widely distributed well-brewed, medium priced beer. They didn't have time to become EXTREME, because they were too busy being competent.

So here's the big, long, narrow, big, woody, tracklighted, big college bar brewery establishment thing that sits in the middle of an impressive brewing and shipping campus. The beers are Harpoon, which you've had. The service is friendly and the establishment is well worth touring.

A little too pricy for me but I liked that they allowed me to try the limited batch beers for free
I also got TONS of sample glasses during the tour so I got to try tons of new beer I never had before!
The pretzel and cheese IPA saice were amazing!

This place gets insanely packed. Had to give the selection a 5 too since they have most if not all their offerings on draft.

Atmosphere consisted of tons of college kids. Beers were okay and the tap selection was pretty good, but virtually no info on the beers was available. Worth a stop if in the area, but not a place I would make the effort to go to.

Love the new beer hall - fun, energetic vibe. Good mix of locals and tourists. One of our favorite places to bring friends from out of town.

They have a great thing going. I went there for Harpoon Festival. The atmosphere was great and the staff was more than accommodating.

Best Eastcoast IPA. Understated Hop taste, nice finish.

The beers may not be highly regarded amongst the BA crew, but their beer hall is very nice. It has a old school German setup as far as the table arrangement goes. The bar is huge and well made. I had a good time there, with the only downside being a long wait to get inside.

Beautiful beer hall to hang out in and enjoy both their food and beer. Each tours comes includes half an hour with their taps. Plenty of good beer to sample. Definitely one of the better brewery tours that I've been on.

One of the best times I have had at any brewery. Harpoon had a huge selection of beers including multiple pilot beers and in house mad root beer. The whole establishment was run quick and clean with incredibly friendly employees. The tour was lengthy and educational and included more than any brewery i'd previously been to.

Visited: 1 June 2014

Atmosphere: Huge communal-style taproom with a large central bar and massive wood-slab tables with benches. Lots of younger people at the place, and just about every table was full, even at 2pm on a Sunday.

Quality: Beer comes in reasonable sizes and in numerous types of glassware. Sampler flights come on harpoon shaped trays with 4 or 5oz glasses.

Service: The waitress I had was a bit standoffish, but the beer and food were delivered in a timely manner.

Seletion: Beer selection is fantastic- all the standard Harpoon and UFO beers along with several taproom only beers, including a few cask beers.

Food: Food options limited to pretzels with several sauces.

Value: Reasonable prices for Boston. I got a sampler, and it was about $8 for the four beers included.

One of the coolest places in Boston. I go as often as I can! they have 3 or 4 new chalk taps every time I go, along with 1 new cask. Taste as many as you want and enjoy the people watching!

Can be a little pricy, but extremely high quality beer, and awesome environment!!!!

Atmosphere: This place is very inviting. It has a large beer hall style layout with plenty of tables. All the beers are listed on a black board over the bar. There are also beers to go available (including growlers) .

Service: The waiter I had was very knowledgeable and provided us with good service and suggestions.

Selection: This brewery offers a solid selection of year-rounds, seasonals and on-offs. They had over ten taps on the go witch made for a great selection.

Food and value: I did not have food but as far as the beer goes, the prices were very resonable. This is definitely a good brewery to visit if you're ever in the Boston area and are looking to have a few local beers. We also did the tour witch was only 5$ and included many samples.

SInce I was last there they have built a new Beer Hall which posts a great environment. Traditional long tables with bench seating to promote intermingling with other groups. If you take the time to speak to the bartenders they will fill you in with a ton of useful info on the beers and give you insight into styles and mixes your typical goer won't get to experience. It's a bit pricy, but has a cool vibe for a huge craft brewery. Got the pretzels and they were amazing.

Did the brewery tour through a hostel I was staying at. My god, place blew my mind. Awesome space full of swag and bottles, a simple yet great bar that pours the samples for everyone. Everything was good to great which is surprising and its evident that people love it cause the room was packed. The amount of people was the only reason I rated it a 3 for service because it took a while to get people served with only two rows of taps, not their fault but it was the only issue of an otherwise great experience in Boston.

I have always wanted to visit Harpoon but never have had time to travel to the opposite side of Boston. However, last time I was able to finally make. When you first walk in it is overwhelming how many people there are but it obviously means they have good beer!

The acoustics in the tasting room are horrible, very noisy environment which kind of hurt the ambiance. I of course chose to do a sampler of the special beers they had on tap at the time. They have three choices of samplers which was the first time I had ever seen, and I liked it. My girlfriend chose the IPA sampler as well so I got to try twice as many beers!

When I go to breweries I like to try the food as well but Harpoon only offered pretzels which was not enough to fill my appetite.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR FOOD NEARBY, try the Yankee FIsh market, it is a little hole in the wall on the way to the brewery. Their fish and chips was the best I have ever had and their fried clams were cooked perfectly. The pricing is reasonable and very fast service.

Overall Harpoon was a cool experience but the noise level, lack and food, and overpriced samplers was a bit of a turn off.

Been to this place 3 times so far. Parking can be a little tough sometimes.

Great place to go with a bunch of friends. Long beer hall style tables.

No real food other than pretzels.

> 10 Harpoon beers on draft, plus a logowear store, growler station etc. !!

Went to a function with my company to the brewery.
We were celebrating raising over $660, 000 for Dana Farber and the Jimmy Fund.
The staff couldn't have been better! Any time anyone needed anything they were right there.
They are also one of our big sponsors for Team Lanzoni.
The selection of beer was of course everything. I wish I could have tried it all. The pumpkin ufo is very good and the imperial ipa as well.
The atmosphere was perfect! Right on the water great views...even in the bathroom. (the urinals are below a huge window facing Boston)

Go...Have fun....Drink beer

Me and my girlfriend decide to go into Boston for the day to check out Harpoon. May i say it was an amazing time. There new Beer Hall is beautiful. It speaks to the brewery with dark woods cast iron. They have all of there beer on tap along with four beers that are exclusive to the beer hall. We original went for the tour alone but will be returning for a beer or two in the future. The tour was a great value at only 5 dollars. It was an hour long tour where you learn about there history there beer and how they run there operations. The last 20 minutes of the tour were devoted to an explanation of there products and an unlimited tasting. They did not have food except for there house made pretzels which were amazingly good with beer. If your in the sea port district of Boston I highly recommend you check Them out you wont be disappointing.

Was at Harpoon fest this year and it was rocking! They have tons of people with bands and beers for your entertainment. If you have never been it is like a college outdoor party minus the ice lug. They have some fun games like keg barrel bowling and wheelchair hoops. I'd recommend checking this out next year if your thinking about going. As for the brewery it was huge and the production line was very interesting. It doesn't cost anything to go on a tour, so check them out.
