The Toronado was the one beer bar in SF that I was not going to miss after reading about it here. It met all of my expectations. This is not a fancy place. I would not take my mother here, but for the beer lover, this is mecca. I loved the smallness, the beer talk going on, and especially the beer.

There were about 50 beers on tap, with four handpumps. There was a great mix of local microbrews, microbrews from futher away, and imports from Belgium, Germany, and the UK. I didn't see a bad beer on tap. There were probably eight double IPAs on tap from Denogginizer to Double Daddy and Racer X. Great selection. The bartender was quiet but after asking his advice on some CA beers, became much more friendly and willing to talk. He was, of course, very knowledgeable. His recommendations were all on the money.

There is no food at the Toronado, but they allow you to bring in food from any restaurant in the area. There is a great mixture of types of food within a block or two, including the great sausage shop that is next door.

Toronado is a must if you're in San Francisco.

Typical dive bar, okay service, but their second-to-none beer selection (Russian River, Alpine, etc.) speaks for itself.

We stopped in starting at 3pm on a Friday and it was a great time to be there. We were able to get a seat in the bar area, rather than the back room (which is dark and quiet). It was 3/4 full and we stayed for a few hours. We left around 7pm and it was just starting to fill up.

The day-time bartender is good, but a bit of curmudgeon. Maybe that's his charm? When they changed over at about 5pm, it was like night and day, super friendly and engaging.

I thought the bottle list was a little weak when we visited, but I must admit, I had previously decided I was pulling the trigger on anything super rare they may have.

The tap list is great as expected. Toronado has a good reputation, lots of reviews, and I can promise that it is as advertised still to this day. If you haven't been, go and enjoy.
